Others will probably offer better advice but ... Boot from a CD/Flash and run fsck on the corrupt drive. If the corruption is not catastrophic then you may well be able to recover from there. If recovery is not easy, then I'd be inclined to put a new disk in (hey - the old one is already 4yrs old)
