The empty 40-pin should be an Intel 7224 if the card is using 7114 bubble
modules, and the 7220 if it's the 7110 bubble modules.
For the card in question, I'm pretty sure it's the 7114 module.
The IC is required as that's the bubble memory controller itself.

I've got an Optica converter box of which the model number escapes me; but it's
the replacement/alternative to the IBM Pacer boxes. That allows bus and tag
