While it's not a review on protein binding sites, the following review might be
helpful in understanding its chemistry:
Holloway & Melnik (1995) Main Group Met. Chem. 451-585.
Also, David Giedroc has written a couple of useful reviews that include
discussions of cadmium binding proteins.

I've been using the Econo system for about 20 years for prep scale
purifications. I regularly do gradients using an external gradient maker
(something like with Hoefer sells -
http://www.hoeferinc.com/product.asp?ProdID=171) that feeds into the pump.
It's worked reliably for me and allows the
the presence of 300 mM
NaCl). Worked great, and I saw stuff coming off the column in both washes.

s we could see
both positions occupied within the same crystal (it looked a lot like what you
are seeing under those circumstances). Peaks in the anomalous difference
Fourier maps were the clearest evidence that it was manganese in each of the
positions.

any recent experience with the TSA that might make this an easier
task? Is it even possible any more?
Thanks in advance for any advice that can be provided.

Thermolysin binds a catalytic zinc and several Ca ions for structural
stability. See Holland et al. (1995) Protein Sci, 4, 1955.

I've had xtals that diffract very well, with bound Mn, come out of
drops containing the precipitate.

Does anyone know of any software that can produce similar images?

You might be interested in some work done on NikA, which binds a nickel complex
with a small organic ligand. They tentatively identified the ligand as
butane-1,2,4-tricarboxylate.
