Our problem turned out to be a network hardware problem, the port that the
SD was plugged into was at 100 not 1000 and maybe the server was at 1000 or the
duplex was not matched.

We run AVG and do not turn it off during backup. It happened on only one
system (one of our few
windows server, Ghost) and as that system was Win 2000 and did not
support VSS turning it off was the
right thing to do.
