We had something about like this happen. Two different things fixed the problem, 1 was to turn off VSS the other was to split the jobs so one job did one drive. The reason that we split the jobs was a re-org. of the backup jobs. I had no reason to think that it would fix the problem. The problem system was/is a ghost server.
