For now this is a fine workaround, but I still wonder what's wrong.
Alsa has gotten complex since I last looked -- it sets up 57! "sliders"

Do you have an internal connection from your CDplayer
to your soundcard (slim grey cable)? If not, you need
an app that can read/play over the IDE bus.
Alsaplayer can do this (though it fails to see
individual tracks on my machine...???), and cdda2wav
will too from the com
