No, I was not using alsaplayer, but I just tried it, and it works!? Also, turns out I can play a .wav file with the "standard stuff." Good question.
For now this is a fine workaround, but I still wonder what's wrong. Alsa has gotten complex since I last looked -- it sets up 57! "sliders" on my system. I hardly know where to start looking.
