How do I find out which of the 30 or so elements in gnome-alsamixer
corresponds to which of the dozen or so inputs and outputs on my SB Live
platinum 5.1? The labels are different, and I know little about the theory
of all this. I can't find any documentation. All that came with the
gnome-alsamix

What does this mean, and what should I do about it?

I'm having real problems compiling alsa-driver-0.9.0rc3 under Debian
testing with a custom 2.4.18 kernel. I have a Creative 5.1 Live Platinum
card.
I have configured with:
../configure --with-cards=emu10k1 --with-isapnp=no
but I get a whole load of isapnp related messages ending with:
