aps it is not related to /dev/whatever but to the
location and permissions of alsa.conf.

und quality. The one an only approach (as far as I am
aware of) to do sound multiplexing in top quality especially tailored
for Alsa is the JACK project. It is in early stage but there are reports
from people who are already using it successfully.

uncompressed the font under M$ and put it on some ftp server. I
donwloaded that huge file (140+ Mb !!) and tried to load it into
iiwusynth. After a minute of freeze, my X server died (iiwusynth was
running suid root). Haven't done any more experiments yet...

Yes. This is what I meant when I said that I don't have the "downmixer"
facility when using non-embedded softsynth with muse.

er but I
think muse currently offers better features.
I would therefore like to use iiwusynth but can anybody point me to a
really good soundfont for gerneral purposes (strings, piano, brass,...)?

lsa-driver v0.9.0 package first...
I didn't know that building libasound requires the drivers in place. So
I guess there are include files required which come with the driver.
Thus, did you merely *compile* the drivers or did you actually install
them? Just follow the instructions in the dox
site
Alsa 0.9 is nowadays the recommended way to do things. I guess your
ALC650 is some Advance Logic chip? It's not listed in the Alsa sound
card matrix which does NOT mean that it is not working. What exactly did
you download? A closed source driver?

8 for hardware
sound synthesis? According to the dox, snd-trident has even option to
change the wavetable memory.
Thanks in advance for any pointers,
