Hi all, I have successfully installed Alsa 0.9 on my PC with a PCChips 810LMR motherboard which has onboard SiS7018 sound (snd-trident module and friends). I am running Mandrake 8.2. The archive of this list helped a lot to nail down those subtle devfs issues.
Then I built rosegarden 0.1.6 for Alsa and the latest timidity for software wavetable synthesis. The playback from within rosegarden sounds downright terrific! Wow...! But I would like to enquire about iiwusynth because I understand iiwusynth is better aimed to soundfonts (I know that I can use soundfonts with timidity too). Has anybody got it working with Alsa 0.9 and SiS7018? Roger Brown (Rosegarden developer) reports it works for him. For me it doesn't. I have recompiled with --enable-debug and set it suid root. This is what i experience: When iiwusynth is running, it does not open a midi port, i.e. i see nothing related when i type 'aconnect -o'. Consequently, in rosegarden i don't see the intstruments from the used soundfont (as I said, rosegarden works fine for me with timidity). But iiwusynth does not complain. It says debug: using alsa audio driver (loads of soundfont info) debug: using alsa midi driver iiwuplay does not work either. It outputs some info about the midi file and prentends to be playing, but there is just silence. And now on to the most astonishing thing: I built the swami soundfont editor (successor of smurf) which uses iiwusynth for on-the-fly testing of instruments. And that connection works! But I still dont see a midi connection from swami to iiwusynth with aconnect or alsa-patch-bay. However, the transport (i.e playing chosen instruments at certain pitches) does work and I hear the notes. Also, when I turn off iiwusynth playback from within swami and then turn it on again, then it remains silent until I restart swami. The SiS7018 has onboard wavetable synthesis too. I can see those ports with aconnect. Maybe iiwusynth requires to be the only synth for correct operation and gets confused?? BTW, does anybody know how to load a soundfont into SiS7018 for hardware sound synthesis? According to the dox, snd-trident has even option to change the wavetable memory.
