I had to do:

I think the names changed around the time of beta11. I believe it had to

The version of alsa you are attempting to use is 1.5-2 years old. It is
unlikely that you will be able to get it working on any current system.
Please try the 0.9.0beta12 version of ALSA. Don't let the beta in the
version name scare you. The 0.9.x ALSA series is much improved over the

In addition to Tim's suggestion, you should try using the 0.9.0beta12
version of alsa. From your original message it looks like you are using
an 0.5.x version. The alsa version number isn't directly related to the
issue your seeing right now, but, 0.5.x is old and shouldn't be used

Alsa 0.5.x, though labeled stable, is actually quite old and no longer
under active development. It is very possible that the feature you
desire has been implemented in the newer drivers. Please try to use
version 0.9.0beta12 of the drivers, library and utilities.

You need to have a compiler installed in order to compile software from
source code.
gcc = gnu C compiler
There should be an rpm of gcc available for your distribution either on

I've attached my first draft attempt at describing how I set up alsa on
my debian testing box for my guillemot maxisound fortissimo using the
ymfpci driver. Here's my todo list which includes some questions I'm
hoping some of you can answer.
TODO: asoundrc section. Is this needed for this card?
How did you set up your /etc/modules.conf?
As you may know, Debian does modules a little bit differently. One way
is instead of editing /etc/modules.conf directly files in the
/etc/modutils/ directory are edited and then assembled by update-modules
into a new /etc/modules.conf

I'm not sure what might be going on here...But, in general it is
probably better to use the latest 0.9.0betaXX drivers. The 0.5 series is
not currently under active development. There are some people still
using the old drivers, so you may actually get your question answered.
It's just more likely

I think you probably need more than just this one line in your

Here's what mine looks like for a ymfpci based card.

alias char-major-116 snd
