In addition to Tim's suggestion, you should try using the 0.9.0beta12
version of alsa. From your original message it looks like you are using
an 0.5.x version. The alsa version number isn't directly related to the
issue your seeing right now, but, 0.5.x is old and shouldn't be used
anymore.
