Are there any cards that have both an spdif (or TOSlink) in and spdif out that are known to work ? (I highly prefer optical) The matrix is woefully out of date, and most people give conflicting reports at best. I would prefer not to have to perform voodoo, or spend more than $100 USD.

After upgrading to 2.6.17 skype on my Creative SB AWE64 PnP started to sound
with really metallic voices, the speed and the tone seems similar to real
but the voice is really metallic. I have tracked that down a bit, but don't
really know what the problem is.
I'm only able to find this proble

I had to hack it to use it with Musix (Debian/etch), and I think it
could
work well, but, you are the experts, so, I want to know if you think it's ok
gfor hardware detection and soundcard install in a boot process.

My sound cards must appear in the right order. For example, physical
card called n°1 must always correspond to the same name

I have an ABit motherboard with Via VT8237 on board sound and a Realtek
ALC658D chip, for which I'm using snd_via82xx. I have version 1.0.12_rc1
of alsa-driver, alsa-headers, alsa-lib, alsa-tools, and alsa-utils
installed on my Gentoo x86_64 system.
I have a 5.1 powered speaker system connected
