My output of depmod -ae is empty. But nothing works for me:
there's no sound output at all

Thanks for the follow-up - I believe that the AC'97 codec
is the Realtek Avance'97.

There might be by using the ALSA OSS emulation libraries (libaoss) instead of
the default kernel OSS emulation modules. But I haven't tried it yet so

So I've just installed Fedora Core 1 and my sound isn't working. Tried
everything I could in terms of distro-specific means to get it working,
no dice. Someone mentions that I should install ALSA.
So I install ALSA just like

Cheers that's a much tidier way of doing it.

No, I don't believe so.

For over a year I have had this problem where sometimes audio apps will
take 1-2 minutes to do anything. It happens for example in XMMS where
usually it will play fine, but sometimes it will open up and then do
nothing for 1-2 min then start playing like there is no problem. Stopping

I've been trying different setups to both play just to certain channels
to test and they didn't work.
I then found a windows machine to put it in and te
Hi,
As far as I remember (since the RC of the alsa-0.9 series), I didn't see
this problem with former releases of the alsa-driver on my system with
the VIA VT8233 southbridge.
When I start playing an audio file like a .mp3 or .ogg, the sound is
irremediably crackling and I get the error :
I ran the command aplay -device="plughw" soundfile.wav
and heard sound but I noticed some skipping towards
the end. XMMS and the CD player don't work yet. I am
not sure if it is a problem with the software or with
alsa.

What should I do to remove everything that is sound-related?
I will try to do this and then reinstall to see if by some

Can anyone give me tips on configuring Multiface HDSP to work with
XMMS/Alsa or Xine -
especially how to specify the Mixer Card no and Mixer Device.
I have read the Linux journal article and both aplay, and alsaplayer are
working.
