i should also say that i believe alsaound has never* not been running* simply because
i can 'restart' it.
restarting alsasound produces the same alsactl error, on shutdown and start.
also, attempting to start it gives the "alsa driver already running" reply.

I have been using LM since 7 and had sound working until LM9. I have an athlon
xp 1600+, 512 megs of memory, via 8233 southbridge onboard sound which worked
with alsa in LM 8.2. I got some broken sound going with LM 9 with the alsa
that comes with Linux-Mandrake 9. Of course, it did
