What's going on here? I have similar problems, on a very
vanilla system: video, sound, ethernet, and PCI. I had
no problems for years; difficulties started after upgrag
Do you use the KDE desktop? Maybe its the KDE sound deamon arts that graps
your card. Other programs will not be able to play sound than. Stop arts or
use a plyer that is arts aware.

I have a Pioneer 106s DVD drive. I have connected the 2 pin digital out
to my RME 96/36 HammerFall sound card. I can play mp3s, oggs, wave files
and the sound from mpeg movies through this card to my preamp just fine.
However playing Cds and DVDs result in no sound.

a program to play mp3s. Downloaded it and ran ./configure. At the end was a
message: now type 'make' to build AlsaPlayer
make stops almost instantly with: make *** No targets. stop

According to the documentation there are two mixers. One is on the
card and is called the internal mixer. The other one is in the
external box and is called the external one.
