I am currently using ALSA against my 2.4.4 kernel. I downloaded driver,
lib and utils. Compiled everything. Configured modules.conf.
Everything is working.
However, I am trying to "upgrade" to 2.4.9 which means I have to

The dynamic loading bug (RTDL_GLOBAL-thing) also affects ecasound.
Ecasound 2.0.2 (and older) won't work with the newer ALSA 0.9
beta-releases (at least beta7 and beta8). Problem is fixed in this
ecasound 2.0.3 release.

when i try to install alsa-lib-0.9.0beta8 or alsa-lib-0.9.0beta7 i get
several errors when i do make check and make install.
i get around the make install errors with some modifications in the
Makefiles, for example i have to compile control,mixer and pcm seperate

I'm having trouble using amixer. Stepping through the code indicates that it
wants to see a number of environment variables, but I'm not sure what to set
them to. It looks for some of these:
