Doesn’t much matter where you put it as long as current is going through it. You might want it between the return line and the battery 0V post so that the voltage is closer to 0 if the input range of your metering is low. i.e. - if the maximum input voltage on your voltage sensor is 10V you

I generally put the shunt in between the battery and the ground. That way you can see current going both ways during charge and discharge. This is important for solar sites. If you are just wanting to monitor load, put it between the battery and the load distribution panel. Or perhaps you
