The 7 blade and 4 flat are the most common from my experience. Usually you have the 7 blade on larger trailers and rvs with things like electric brakes and constant battery power. The 4 flat is popular for small trailers with just marker and turn signals. Any trailer I own is going to have one

There are 3 different flavors of the 7-pin connector. Most trailers use what is sometimes referred to as 7-pin common. The flat 4-pin will not accommodate a trailer brake controller. You need at least a 5-pin to do the trailer brakes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wik
