The 7 blade and 4 flat are the most common from my experience. Usually you
have the 7 blade on larger trailers and rvs with things like electric
brakes and constant battery power. The 4 flat is popular for small
trailers with just marker and turn signals.

Any trailer I own is going to have one of the above two connectors. Any
towing rig is also going to have one or both of those two connectors. For
rigs with only a 7 pin, a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter will be kept with the
rig. Generally a vehicle with only a 4 pin connector is small enough you
shouldn't be towing a trailer which needs a 7 pin connector. Note that a
7 to 4 adapter needs electronics to combine the turn and brake lights.

Right now my vehicle collection only has 4 pin connectors. I expect this
to b change in the very near future.

There are lots of adapters available for others if you run into them, such
as https://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Hopkins/HM47570.html . The challenge
as you have found is that there seems to be lots of standards out there
one you get outside of the 4 flat and 7 blade connectors, with those 6 pin
round ones being probably the worst offender (although the 5th wire in a 5
flat connector comes close)
