We didn't have a hang problem with 5.1.6.5 and then we upgraded yesterday.
Now backups are crawling and we have a hang problem. We're still trying to
figure out what's wrong.

5.1.7.1. In earlier versions I would see some sort of unavailable or
inaccessible message with all drives empty.

I had exactly the same problem yesterday afternoon. I couldn't
figure out what was wrong so I halted and restarted the TSM server.
(The software, not the machine itself)
Somehow it made the problem go away.

5.2 came out this summer so does that mean that 5.1 will be out of support around june
next year?. I've (tried) to search ibm.com but could not find an answer. The end of
support matrix only lists 4.1 and 4.2.

I'll second that. We were able to create a dsm.opt file in the program
files\tivoli\tsm\config directory and have it moved to the baclient
directory on the target machine. This stopped working with V5.2.0.2.

You need to check your configuration to make sure you are using the
propert exit
You need to do the AD restore in AD repair mode. You could perform the
entire restore scenario in AD repair mode. TSM can handle the job as you
have described in your scenario.

I was able to re-create the same thing. My custom dsm.opt file is not
copied from the config directory. I also noticed that the msi package is
now "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.msi", not "Tivoli Storage Manager.msi" as
documented.

You might want to use TRACEFLAG PERFORM instead, which combines config,
client detail, prefix, timestamp, and stats.

I don't know Tivoli Application but you can find switches in README file.

Thanks, I'll check into the physical size/allocation of the file but I do have an automatic script that trims the volhist file weekly. I have to do this in order to get scratch tapes back into the fold. CA-1 will not recognize TSM tapes as scratch until they are deleted from the volhist file.
