But when I go to http://:5801
I get a great big Not Found
message.

Here's what's in the log.

15/11/01 10:16:14 httpd: get '' for 169.238.222.4
15/11/01 10:16:14 httpd: defaulting to 'index.vnc'
15/11/01 10:16:14 httpProcessInput: open: No such file or directory

Any idea what's happening here?

Thanks,
Jim.

RE: Problem using winVNC

Subject: Problem using winVNC

I have 3 computers running on a MS TCP network. I am able to share files
and
printers with no problem.

Two of the computers use Intel Celeron CPUs and a laptop uses a Cyrix CPU.
The celeron computers use WIN98 SE and the laptop uses WIN98. After
installing the latest version of VNC on all of them, I am able to view
either
of the Celeron computers from the laptop, and view the laptop from either of
the Celeron computers. However. setting up either Celeron Computer with VNC
as a server, and the other as a viewer, when I attempt to connect, I receive
the message, "Please Wait _ Initial Screen Loading." I have applied the
info
about the Registry that I found in the archives/2001-01/0293.html, but only
to one of the two computers. What should I do next?

By the way, I can ping both remaining computers from the other computer and
receive a reply.

Thanks for any help!

Frustrated,

Thank you, Rick, for your quick response to my problem.

I changed both Celeron computers screen settings to 640x480 pixels, 256
colors, rebooted both to be sure they were seeing the changes, ran VNC App
on
one and VNC Viewer on the other. The results were the same as before, the
screen of the machine I am running the Viewer on says "Please wait-Initial
Screen is loading."

>> I don't know on that one.

Here is one more hint. When I move the mouse on the server, the tiny square
moves around on the screen, and the activity lights for the two computers on
the network hub blink back and forth, rapidly. I suppose this indicates
some
sort of communication between the two computers?

>> That is the update, select 'Poll Full Screen' in properties

Apparently, WIN98SE has done something differently about networking? I
would
hate to try to remove it and replace it with the older WIN98 just to see if
I
could obtain better results with VNC.

>> It does, though should not offer an interoperability issue

Finally, I hope that I am sending this msg to the correct address so that
all
using the list could join in. I need all the help I can get!

Thanks,

VNC Server on NIC Computer (www.thinknic.com)

2001-12-06 Thread Rick W. Vanover IV

Does anyone own the NIC Computer from Oracle, it is a snazzy $200 beauty
that is reported to have a Linux VNC build on it. I can't tell if it has the
server or just the viewer. The computer is diskless, so it really can't
be added, but I'm curious if any of y'all have one and are using VNC server
on it.

I'm getting one of these computers in a few days.

Many thanks,

I am running VNC server on Red Hat Linux. I want my
clients to see different desktops as they connect.

Starting the vncserver with -alwaysshared option
doesn't help it makes the clients to see the same
desktop.

Also is there any way to disable authentication when
client connects ?

Thanks in advance,
Girish

Just installed WinVNC server on a Win98SE pc. This is my first
experience with VNC. It is cool. However, I want to implement the
AuthHosts settings to restrict access as I test/learn this cool app., and
I have a rather lame question. I understand the sytax for restricting
access via the templates (+[ip-address-template], etc.). My problem is,
I'm not sure how to create the REG_SZ key/string correctly using
regedit.exe (I'm more of a *nix person - wrapping services/hosts.allow &
hosts.deny...). Anyway, I can get to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\

but once I do, I'm not certain of the specific steps to create the
*REG_SZ* string! Can anyone send me the specific steps for creating the
string, and/or a working/sample example of your AuthHosts template(s) so I
can create an AuthHosts template? I've read the vnc FAQ, searched
the vnc-list archives, and searched www.microsoft.com for anything that
would help me understand regedit.exe better, specific to creating the
REG_SZ string for the version of regedit that ships with Win98SE, but
haven't found the golden nugget yet :) TIA.

You may think also of the SCRIPTIT tool - which I believe is part of the NT

Don't know where to get it, but put the net to the test and it'll arrive

About the values from registry ... you export to *.REG on key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL

EXAMPLE:

by script user, run:
C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE /S F:\UTILITY\VNC.REG

Hmmm... I can imagine installing the program on one WS first, then record
the changes. Actually my experience says these files are necessary:

c:\program files\orl\vnc\vnchooks.dll
c:\program files\orl\vnc\winvnc.exe
c:\program files\orl\vnc\zlib.dll
c:\windows\system\omnithread_rt.dll

Export the registry settings from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL. In addition it would be wise to export
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices if
you would like to run Vnc as a service (remove everything except the WinVNC
line).

Copy the necessary files and update the registry settings through the logon
script and when the user reboot next time you will be up and running
(hopefully)...

Subject: RE: Installing Vnc on 500 workstations

I currently rollout vnc to workstations / servers across our wan, on
an as needed basis. Using a simple script, and the soon.exe that
is part of the NT4.0 resource kit. This could be accomplished without
the util soon. Just makes it easier to create the at command.

The user never knows that the script has been run, nor does it ask
the user for any response. The vnc service is installed, and password
and other registry entries are installed, and the service started.

It could be very easily modified to run from a login script. Or to
run thru a list of your machines and remotely install to them all at
once, etc..

Please tell me your 500 workstations are NT, or 2k - and we wont have
a problem. If your running 9x - you have more problems than trying
to run an install script from a login

The basics are just scheduling a job to install the registry keys,
and then running the winvnc.exe You can get by the user not having admin
permissions this way . You then have another scheduled job run
the winvnc.exe -install and then do a net start. All done.

Let me know if you interested - and I'll drop you a copy of my script.

Be more than happy to step you through setting it up - a little more
detail on your network would be helpful. Ie are you 100% NT, and do
you have the schedule / task service running - it is defaulted to be
running, but maybe you have turned it off? You could add a line in
the script to make sure this service is running, etc..

let me know,

Hi to everyone, and thanks to all that have worked on Vnc.

I have been given the task of rolling out Vnc to approx 500 windows based
workstations. I'm looking for a way of running the Vnc setup.exe through
login scripts and would like a way of doing this without the user needing to
click the next buttons etc, is this possible?
I'm also looking at a way of using a service with admin type rights to
install and start the service on NT.
I've looked over the site and through the mailing archive and cannot find
any info relating to this, If anyone can help or has suggestions it will be
very much appreciated

Quick Survey

2001-04-16 Thread Rick W. Vanover IV

I'm authoring article and would like to do a quick non-scientific survey:

For your 'server room'

Do you:

A.Share it as storage for your organization
B.Share it as an office
C.Have sole possession of it for that purpose
D.Have it out in the open
E.Distribute equipment throughout a facility (not in a dedicated room)
F.Have a closet - a coat closet or other poor arrangement
G.Other, please list

Also:

Where is your 'patch panel' and LAN components (hubs, switches, routers,
etc.):

A.In 'server room'
B.In a separate room/area
1.Secured
2.Unsecured
C.Other, please list

This group is good as it covers large and small enterprises. I appreciate
any input and it will be credited. For those who respond, I'll send you a
link to the article when it goes online. If I could have all responses by
the evening of 2001.4.18, that would be great.

BSD VNC Console Question

2001-04-20 Thread Rick W. Vanover IV

I have a BSD question. I have a BSD 3.? something system on PC class
hardware and I am wondering if I can 'clone' the system up to a better hard
drive.

The hard drive I have is fine, but is approaching an age that I am not
comfortable with.

I am familiar with cloning on PCs / DOS, but I am really skiddy in UNIX.
Any ideas???

I use it as my remote viewer to my DHCP and DNS as it is truly a set and
forget device for a remote office and like the way it works (and don't want
to rebuild it as it took a while to do).

Many thanks
