iPAQ connection

2004-09-13 Thread Jim
VNC (4) unable to connect to desktop computer using WiFi network on
iPAQ 5550 and WinXP (home). VNC 3 works just fine (if slowly). The
error logged is:

"VNC Server 4.0 - VNC Server for Win32, Version 4.0
Built on Jun 15 2004 at 14:29:41
Copyright . RealVNC Ltd. 2002-2004

Starting User-Mode VNC Server.

Sat Sep 11 10:18:22 2004
VNCServerWin32: TcpListener on port 5900 failed (unable to bind listening
socket: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network
  address/port) is normally permitted.
 (10048))"

On attempted connection, "Active Ports" shows a connection established
(port 5900) to the iPAQ but there is nothing displayed on the PDA
screen. To reiterate, VNC 3 does connect.

 Thanks for help.

Absolutely sure as I only downloaded VNC 3 in desperation after all
failed with VNC 4. According to Active Ports there is nothing else
using port 5900 (and I have disabled the XP remote service).

I can connect by WiFi using another PC to the XP machine using VNC 4
which would further imply that port 5900 is not being used by anyone
else. Finally, I have hard reset the iPAQ and started from scratch
with VNC 4 with no improvement.

Thanks for the response.

JW> Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

Yes, that is the situation. The CE shows nothing. What is
bizarre is after trying to initiate the connection from the CE
machine, "Active Ports" reports that a connection is
established on port 5900 and shows the connection from "JimPPC" (the
name of the CE device).

There is a screen that flashes by when I initiate the viewer on the

No password required

2005-01-30 Thread Jim
Hi all,

I set up two VNC servers on two XP Pro machines behind a Freesco router.
Once I knew I could establish a connection to either one form both the
LAN and from the Internet I added unique passwords to both servers to
add a little security. The problem is that neither machine seems to ask
for one, I can just log right in regardless of where I try from. I
searched the archives and found nothing that addressed this issue and
thought one of you may have a clue. If you need more information just
let me know.

Thanks,

Strange behavior, probably configuration

2004-09-16 Thread Jim Trawick
We've been running 3.3.7 to administer several remote servers. We've recently
replaced some of the W2K boxes with 2003 boxes, and a couple of them (not all)
exhibit a strange behavior. We also have an XP Pro box with the same problem.
All boxes have RDP enabled, including the ones that work properly.

The behavior is, when the console session goes away (exited RDP or timed out),
the VNC session stops. The screen still shows the point cursor, but the arrow
on the target freezes. If we VNC into a box already in that state, the window
comes up, but it's black (like a screen saver condition w/ W2K) with the same
cursor situation. Occaisionally, VNC will be in that condition even when a
console session is active. Exiting and reentering the console session will
restore operation.

This is a critical application, and RDP won't cut it (multiple users). Because
I've got a couple of boxes that seem to work correctly, I'm pretty sure I've
just got something set wrong, but I can't see it.. Please help.

Re: VNC through firewall

2004-09-23 Thread Jim Trawick
You can run through a firewall if you can get your IT folks to specifically accept VNC
traffic.
Suggest you use SSH tunneling (http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/sshvnc.html)
if
they're amenable.

possible to use VNC through a firewall?

At my work I can't get access to my computer at home because of the

Re: Norton

2004-10-12 Thread Jim Trawick
Not sure why you recalled this, Magdalena, it's good advice. Unless you're
not connected in any way to the outside (you won't be getting this), you
need some kind of protection. It's theoretically possible to restrict your
box to brain-dead versions of browsers and such to attempt to avoid
infection, but your users won't, and they'll use your box to propagate. You
can use UNIX/Linux, and hope nobody ever takes an interest, but with the EU
government's current interest in standardizing on it, don't bet on it.

Trust me, unless you write ALL your own stuff, you don't know what
"features" the DLLs that run your apps come packaged with, and if you're not
running Linux, the OS kernel either. Fortunately, major attacks are still
relatively infrequent, but one will eventually happen that affects some OS
element that's deep in the kernel, and users of well-connected,
frequently-updated antivirus programs will be blissfully running their
businesses, while folks like Valis will be trying to reconstruct their
enterprises from the backup tapes he probably also doesn't use. Real
programmers DO use anti-virus software.

That said, there are already a number of horror stories on the 'net about
NAV 2005. I wouldn't assume it's "better" (well-behaved?) than 2004. Any
software is a balance between the benefits derived, and the effort required
to administrate it. These are starting to be a tough call.

For Judy Wilkerson, a NAV version is usually good for four years or so. If
you've worked the bugs out of your current versions, just renew the def
update subscriptions.

We're successfully running a Windows VNC through three different versions of
NAV, including NAV 2004 and 2005. They do require some setup.

Re: norton

2004-10-13 Thread Jim Trawick
I take it you're new to Google.

...to name just a few.
Beta for two months? NAV 2004 has been out for a year, and they still have
not fixed the Cyrix chip bug
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004042112001339?Open&src=bar_sch_nam&docid=2003082810333706&nsf=nav.nsf&view=d4578f66d8f00a0188256d4e006aaa94&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=.

We are also using NAV 2005 successfully, with VNC, but it takes some admin,
which is what this guy is complaining about. Admin is just part of the cost
of doing IT business. We can whine, or get busy, our choice.

Replying to original posts asking specifically about NAV 2005.
I installed NAV 2005 this week on both my office and home (kids) PC.
I've used all the previous versions over the years.

For home, and curious surfing Kids, NAV is the best yet in category. I
leave all the NAV default protections on FULL Enabled. Single biggest new
protection area in 2005 over 2004 is WORM protection. Other improvements
as well with Trojans, Spyware, and of course Virus. The Worm stuff is
related to the other guys comment about Firewalls. NAV is not a firewall,
but does optionally block a couple of known ports Worms use. If you
have kids, this should be a no-brainer.

For Office, I'm in computer tech field, I turn OFF all the NAV Default
stuff. Really, I disable everything. I use NAV 2005 manually, when I
choose, which means maybe one or twice a week. Also quite handle when I
need to scan one file, or folder of files, on the fly.

I've had no problems with NAV. Nor have I read 'horror' stories. NAV
2005 was in beta period for at least two months. Thousands of people
downloaded the free beta. I think Symantec did a decent job prerelease
testing to final.

Connecting to dialup VNC server not on Internet

2005-05-25 Thread Jim Schlichting
Hi,

I wanted to set up remote access to a WinXP Home PC with a 56k modem
connected to a phone jack, but with no connection to the Internet.

This is for a small nonprofit organization. It would allow remote entry
of data on the PC at times where nobody is at the PC. In addition, we
would strongly prefer not to allow the PC to access the Internet since
it will be used during the day by unsupervised teens.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SMC2804WBRP router configuration

2005-06-07 Thread Jim Neale
It will become clear as you read on that I'm a real novice at this. I'd
appreciate any step-by-step , dumbed-down advice any of you would be
willing to share.

I want to be able to access my home computer from work. I initially wanted
to ftp files from and to home but couldn't get that to work. I'm now trying
VNC.

My service at home provides a dynamic IP address. I have a SMC router,
model SMC2804WBRP-G-CA. When I query my IP config it tells me it's using
192.168.1.100 and this is confirmed on the status page when I access router
administration. I've done some port forwarding to get better performance
out of e-mule but whatever I've done with port 5900 hasn't provided access
thus far. I've searched the archives and tried several approaches
recommended for other routers (all failed - probably misinterpreted).

Suggestions? Guidance?

Thanks.

2005-08-17 Thread Jim Bohnsack
Last Friday, I replied to two postings on the above subject with the
message below. I've been able to resolve the problem, but will first say
what did not work.

It was not a problem with ZoneAlarm. I disabled ZA on my home machine
(viewer) and tried with the Win/XP firewall and also without any firewall
at home. I still could not get in. What I was seeing was the VNC popup
that said "VNC INFO Failed to get server address. Did you type the host
name correctly?" I tried from two other machines in the office and from,
running TightVNC, was able to get to my desktop. From another, with my
RealVNC viewer diskette, I could not get in. This was at the old level of
VNC 3.3.6. I installed VNC 4.1.1 and that didn't make any difference. I
uninstalled 5 of the 6 MSoft updates from my desktop server, running
Win2000, (couldn't find the MS KG890830 Add/Remove entry) and that didn't
work.

What worked, finally, was that I uninstalled VNC 3.3.6 and VNC 4.1.1 and
reinstalled 4.1.1 and that worked. Apparently, something in the
installation of last weeks MS updates cludged up the previously installed
VNC.

I wondered about something like that and tried to connect from home to the

the adjoining office, however. I can't ping my own because I guess I must
have incoming ICMP blocked by my office firewall. When I tried to connect

Jim,

The error you were seeing indicated that the VNC Viewer was unable to
resolve the hostname that you were entering. This is a problem with the
viewer computer not being able to look up the server name, not with the
server itself. One possible cause of such a problem in a Windows-centric
LAN is if names are being looked up by contacting the Master Browser, rather
than by DNS, then if a machine's entry with the Master Browser becomes lost
or corrupt then it can take some time to be corrected.

seems to be working towards a solution is that I uninstalled the patches
and then uninstalled VNC. Following that, I reinstalled the patches and
then VNC. I was able to get a reply from my desktop last night, altho
after reinstalling VNC yesterday, I forgot to set the password, so I
couldn't get in. I did, tho, get a reply from the desktop which is more
than I had gotten.

When I was uninstalling the MS patches, about half of the patch uninstalls
gave me warning messages saying that VNC may not work after that patch is
removed.

It may not have been necessary to remove the MS patches and VNC. Perhaps
just a removal and reinstall of VNC would have done the same thing.

Jornada 820 not working?

2005-09-12 Thread Jim Gurley
I've acquired the VNCVIEW program for my Jornada (Win CE 2.1), and the
program starts fine. The uk.att website seems to be down, so I got a copy
from the Conduits website (106KB version, 3/14/99 date). I installed the
4.1.1 free VNC server on a Win2KServer machine, and it seems to run okay.

When I start VNCVIEW, I enter "192.168.124.100:0" as the host, and at
first, got "can't connect to server". As a wild guess, I tried "import VNC
3.3 settings" and the error went away, but nothing else happens. If I
check the box "Only use protocol version 3.3" it draws an initial screen
with "Please wait - initial screen loading" which then goes away. There's
no task running afterwards in the task monitor.

I've set "no authentication" and added "192.168.124.0,255.255.255.0" to the
"connections" tab. Everything else is as installed.

Anybody got any ideas?

VNC screen number?

2005-09-14 Thread Jim Gurley
I'm connecting a Jornada 820 to a W2KServer, and it's unusably slow. Is
there a way to connect so that the client can get a smaller screen size and
depth? My administrator setting is 1280x1024/32bit and I can't/won't drop
to 640x480/8bit. Different W2K users can't have independent screen
characteristics (it appears). Does the "screen number" provide a
solution? I tried setting the client to a different number, and it fails
to connect.

Re: Real VNC Speed

Hi Hal,

What versions of server and viewer are you using... I've installed
many variants and versions and do find for the most part that the
RealVNC 4.1.x viewer to RealVNC 4.1.x server using ZRLE is very
stable/reliable and compares very close to the fastest mix I can
come up with of all the varied variants and versions...

As only the later RealVNC versions match up supporting ZRLE this is
   probably Not surprising...

It *seemed* like with Real, that I was beginning to see delays when I double
clicked on icons before the screen showed the full window, fully updated, but
I'm not sure. It could also be slower connections, or just my imagination.
I'm asking because I was looking for compression settings and some info and
didn't find ay.

As I said, I was wondering if it was my imagination. I'm more than willing to
accept that it was. I'm sure you know what I mean -- you change something,
just a small thing, and your mind plays tricks on you, when you think that
something's changed.

Thanks for the assurance! ;-)

RE: Extended Windows on two monitors

2006-01-11 Thread Jim Bohnsack
I run with 2 windows on my office desktop, which is usually the server I
access remotely. I am set up so that Windows "thinks" the two are one
screen, in that if I maximize something, the image is spread across both
monitors. I use one screen or the other just by moving the mouse
pointer. Obviously, I don't maximize much. My office partner, however,
uses two monitors and he can have two different windows, both maximized, on
his two monitors. He doesn't use VNC so I don't know how he would have to
set up the server differently. When I connect to my desktop from a remote
location using a single display, I will see the two office displays, one at
a time, by moving the mouse pointer to the right side of the screen if I
had been using the left office display or vice versa. I am using VNC 4.1
on the server and viewer, altho it worked the same way with VNC 3.??
previously.

VNC 4 series servers make the contents of all of the server computer's
monitors available remotely in a single desktop. If that's not what you're
seeing then you are probably using an old VNC 3 series server.

At the risk of asking a truly simple-minded question
I am running vnc 4.1.1 on Windows 2k
Unless I specify that the client connect via shared session, I boot
everybody.
I have tried everything I can think of to cause the viewer to always connect
with a Shared Sesssion:
- Accesing the properties via the SysTray icon and selecting "Always treat new
sessions as shared".
- Accessing the User-Mode and Service-Mode properties via the Program menu.
I have tried to find the answer in the FAQs, and but they don't seem to cover

I am sure I have some basic mis-understanding of things here, and would

someone could point it out. Maybe a Reg hack?

Scroll speed

VNC From CD (Hal Vaughan)

2006-03-22 Thread Jim Bohnsack
I don't know about using PUTTY or doing any kind of tunneling from a remote
PC to get back to my desktop, but when I travel for business or to visit my
family, I use a diskette or a USB ramdrive that contains the
REALVNC client and connect to my desktop where I run the server code. One
of the people with whom I work just downloads the VNC client. Another
solution may be just to use a browser connection. I've been told that
works great, but I haven't tried it. I know that I have absolutely no
security using the free client only but it is a way you could start and
then build up from there.

Subject: VNC From CD

I'm dealing with situations where I'll be working on some other
computers without RealVNC on them, both Windows and Linux. I'm looking
at using PuTTY (or Plink -- forgot which works best at the moment, but
both are stand alone binaries) to create a connection back to my
home/office system, and running a VNC connection tunneled through that.
Since I'm going to be working on other people's computers, I don't want
to install either PuTTY or RealVNC.

If I put RealVNC (both Windows and Linux) on a CD (each version in a
separate directory) run it from there, would there be any issues? I
figure in Windows I can probably put it all in one directory and use a
simple VBScript program to run PuTTY, then RealVNC, and make sure the
connections are there. I think in Linux I'd be using a shell script
that would set the PATH to include the appropriate directory (and/or
subdirectories if I have any), then run PuTTY, and then run RealVNC. I
don't see why this should be an issue. I know RealVNC uses a library
not all systems have, but from what I've seen I can set LD_LIBRARY_PATH
and have that library in a directory on the CD.

Are there additional issues? I figure if this works, I can carry either
a USB ramdrive or business card CD with PuTTY and RealVNC for both
Linux and Windows and that would easily let me connect back to my own
system (probably as both a server and client, in case I have someone at
my system who needs to share access to the system I'm on).

Thanks for any comments.

Hal

Re: Setting up VNC Server and viewer

2006-04-01 Thread Jim Hill
(I sent this yesterday but Thunderbird addressed it
only to Andreas, not to the list.)

in reply to Andreas Gieryic:

i think your first option won't work.
This looks more right.

> ... install the server piece on all the remote workstations (after hard
> coding all their private IP addresses) and then install the viewer on my
> home system to allow me to connect to them.

but won't you need to open a port in your router for each w/s?

or perhaps it's possible to install vnc viewer on the file
server, and daisy-chain; ie, connect from home to server,
then from server to w/s. (someone who knows pls advise:)

Actually I do this part in reverse -- get the user on the w/s
to make their vnc server call my listening viewer
(at home i have a fixed ip address).

You should encrypt your connection from home.
I use sTunnel, and have attached an sTunnel config note.
(Was hoping to expand it to a complete VNC/sTunnel how-to,
but didn't get time yet, as usual ;)

jim
sTunnel configuration file

In this section we look at these elements in stunnel.conf:
 * client =
 * accept =
 * connect =

  client =

"client" refers to sTunnel itself, not to whatever runs through it.
sTunnel is a server if it listens for connections from a remote host.
It is a client if it listens for requests from localhost (and then
   calls a remote host).

sTunnel does not initiate connections of it's own accord; when started
   it does nothing but listen.
It does not establish a connection until it gets a request from one of
   the 'services' listed in stunnel.conf.

  accept and connect

These go in pairs: exactly one of each under each service heading.
For each service, sTunnel listens on the 'accept' address:port and
   forwards to the 'connect' address:port.

The value of "accept" in a sense identifies the service to sTunnel,
and each service must have a unique address:port.

When it starts, sTunnel listens on the 'accept' address:port given
   under every service heading.

accept =

This is an address and port that sTunnel listens on. (Not an address
   to accept calls from.)

sTunnel can accept requests coming in on any local interface.

if you put accept = 127.0.0.1 it can accept only on the loopback
   interface.
Loopback hears only calls that originate from a local process, and
cannot receive from a remote machine.
Use 127.0.0.1 for security, whem you want to accept requests only from
   internal processes.

0.0.0.0 means any address, so in this context it means any local
   interface (including loopback).
Use 0.0.0.0 to accept requests from remote hosts, when you don't have
any reason to specify a particular interface.
It's more convenient than having to know a specific address, and it
works if you don't have a fixed IP address.

connect =

This is an address and port that sTunnel forwards traffic to.

It can be 127.0.0.1 if accepting from a remote host and connecting to
   a local process.

Otherwise it must be the address of a remote host, to a port on which
   sTunnel is listening.

In the table below, only one port number has to be as shown here, and
   that's 5500.
With all the others you can choose your own numbers.
(But of course, you have to match calling and receiving ports, as i
   have here,
and use the same ports in VNC where applicable.)

Scenario client= accept= connect= VNC connect to VNC listen on
   Normal mode

Server connect needs tray icon

2006-04-06 Thread Jim Hill

Hi Wez

An *unattended* RealVNC server (free version,
on an NT4 domain controller) needs to connect to
a listening viewer off site. (via stunnel)

A script runs as a PythonService on the server,
and starts the command "winvnc4 -connect host::port"

It looks like the IPC from this command's process, to the
existing server process, has to go through the systray icon.

When nobody's logged on, there's no tray icon,
so the connect command gets
"Unable to locate existing VNC Server."

Is there a way accomplish this in the free version?
If not, can a paid version do it?

jim

Can server connect when nobody logged on

2006-04-06 Thread Jim Hill

Hi all

An _unattended_ NT4 domain controller
running RealVNC4 server (free version)
needs to connect to a listening viewer off site.

(Using sTunnel with full certificate exchange,
so don't worry about security ;)

On the server, a PythonService runs a script that uses
subprocess() to run the command "winvnc4 -connect host::port".

But it gets only "Unable to locate existing VNC Server."

Took a while to figure out why, but it looks like the IPC
from the process belonging to the connect command
to the process belonging to the existing server
has to go through the systray icon.

When nobody's logged on, there's no tray icon!

Has anyone ever connected this way?

I guess most people connect in the other direction,
but i can't, because the server belongs to a company
that forbids opening a port in their router. [:]

I'm hoping to get it running this weekend - any chance?

If the free version can't do it, can a paid one? (Which one?)

regards
jim

Re: Can server connect when nobody logged on

2006-04-08 Thread Jim Hill

The questions boil down to this:

1
have i misunderstood what free version is doing?
can it really do what i need?

2
if not, can either of the paid versions do it?
don't want to buy one and find out that it can't ;)

It sounds like you're running it in user mode.

WinVNC4 is running as a service.
it's set to start automatically,
in SYSTEM account, and interact with the desktop.

i tried the service earlier,
set NOT to interact with the desktop.
started the service manually, NO tray icon appeared.
the -connect command got "Unable to locate existing VNC Server".

So i figured there's no IPC when there's no tray icon.

and when no-one's logged on, there can't be a tray icon.
__

after the testing i had a look in the source,
and it seems to confirm what i thought.

(C++ is beyond me, Python's enough of a challenge,
so i don't *really* understand this ;)

in winvnc.cxx at line 102 is processParams( ),
where, if the "-connect" param is followed by an address,
it goes to SendMessage(hwnd,... ).

but, hwnd comes from FindWindow(0, _T("winvnc::IPC_Interface"),
and "winvnc::IPC_Interface" seems to be defined in
*STrayIcon.cxx*, line 62, in class winvnc::*STrayIcon*.

this leads to thread.server.addNewClient()
in STrayIcon.cxx at line 172

which leads to VNCServerWin32::addNewClient( )
in VNCServerWin32.cxx at line 210.

but i'm not smart enough to figure out how to call
VNCServerWin32::addNewClient directly from Python :)

bottom line: looks like the IPC goes through STrayIcon.
__

i'm testing on an old NT4 workstation.
when i reboot it, i wait a few minutes before logging in.
during that time, no VNC connect happens.
(i know my Python service is running,
'cos it writes the time in a log file.)

as soon as i log in, the VNC tray icon appears;
soon after that, a loop in the python repeats,
and VNC connects.

All the logs show that VNC did nothing until i logged in.
there's no proof that it's running, but i guess it must be;
there's no error msg anywhere about a service failing to start.

had a brilliant idea -
stay logged on at the server, just "lock workstation"
- the tray icon might still be accessible.

but it's no good, -connect still got "Unable to locate existing
VNC Server" (on NT40 and NT51)

will do a free trial of Enterprise version.

So i figured there's no IPC when there's no tray icon.
and when no-one's logged on, there can't be a tray icon.

I should have added this:
go to ShieldsUp at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
click Proceed
on the next page, in the text box,
type the port you opened on your router.
at this point, start a capture in ethereal
then on the ShieldsUp page click
"User specified custom port probe"
when ShieldsUp has finished, stop the ethereal capture.
study the results.
if that port is being forwarded, you'll see it in ethereal.

[in ethereal you'd see something like this:
that port should first recv a SYN packet.
if nothing is listening on that port,
your machine sends back a RST packet.
if something is listening,
your machine sends back an ACK packet.
having got an answer, ShieldsUp sends a FIN packet.]

Just quit

2006-04-14 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Before I go trudging off digging away, can someone save me a little time?
I've had a setup working for quite some time using DynDNS and an updater -
all of the sudden - it quit, nothing's changed that I can tell, the IP is
still the same.

My host is a pc on my home network with a D-link router (two of the units
attaching are wireless) using DHCP with non-expiring leases - over
broadband. I can access the host within the network using the VNC server as
is - it worked outside before. Neither the host IP, the "leased" IP on the
broadband cable modem, nor any of the settings have changed. I can ping the
public IP and the updater sees and reports it correctly.

The problem is that suddenly, I go back and forth between timeouts and
connection refused (from outside the internal network).

Any suggestions where to start?

My gut instinct tells me your port-forwarding in the router got messed up or
it's a firewall issue. I would suggest you reset your router and/or try
resetting the port-forwarding.

Real VNC/DynDns - connection refused 10061

2006-04-20 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Well, I've now gotten to the point the connection no longer times out, it
get a "connection refused 10061" error now. This is the same connection that
worked for about a month, then started giving me time-outs. I'm using a
broad-band connection, coming out of the cable modem, into a LinkSys router,
the internal network is class C 192.168.0.xxx netmask 255.255.255.0 -
internally, I can make a connection, no problem. Externally, for a while it
quit working entirely (time-outs), then suddenly now it's refusing the
connection.

Nothing visible has changed - the VNC properly sees the "local" IP and the
DynDns updater properly identifies the external (real) IP of the cable
modem.

Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot? It's all pretty much set for
defaults, it doesn't seem to be the VNC - as I said it works WITHIN the
network - I'm scratching my head on this one. It SHOULD be working (well, it
WAS working - then just suddenly quit - the IP hasn't changed, either
internally or externally).

Oh, and I should have mentioned also (about the port-number
mis-match) that the FIREWALL on the server-side must ALSO
be setup to let the PORT-number come THRU to the server!

In otherwords, if you are using the port-number 5900, the
firewall on the 'server-side' (if one exists), must be
setup to allow the incoming connection on that port.
(In your case, if you have a 'router' on the server-side,
especially a 'home-router', it probably ALSO has firewall
functionality builtin, and you'll have to check that.)

Also, the OS itself (e.g. Windows and Linux, etc, also contain
builtin firewall products that you may have to check on and
tweak accordingly.

Hope this clarifies my earlier post...

I can NOT speak for VNC in particular, but in GENERAL,
anytime a client is talking to a server and you see
'connection refused', it means that the client [viewer in
case of VNC] is trying to contact the server on a PORT
number different that the SERVER is listening on.

(Therefore, the OS itself, knowing that there is NOT any
server [of any kind] running on the requested incoming PORT
number, send back a 'connection refused'.)

In the particulars of VNC, the DEFAULT port that both the
client and server expect to communicate on is port number
5900. So, my guess is that your VNC server and your VNC
client are NOT agreeing on the port-number to use. In
otherwords someone or something is causing a port-number
mis-match.

That's a good question (about whether the viewer-side port#
can be changed). I do NOT know.

Maybe only the SERVER-side port# can be changed. What that could
be for would be to allow your firewall to accept incoming port#5900
and then re-MAP that to a different port # when it hands the connection
over to the server. (Tho WHY someone might want to do that with VND is a
bit beyond me. But, in my short-time work in a firewall-devel
group, people DO seem to want to do stuff like that.)

But, I'm totally talking just theory here in ALL of my postings, since
I do NOT know much of the specifics of the VNC product. I'm only another
user monitoring this list for a while trying to solve a few of
my OWN questions/issues, etc.

So, take what I say with a grain of salt.

Cheers...

Connection Refused

2006-04-24 Thread Jim RabidWolf
I've gone from timing out trying to dial into my home system, to "Error
10061: Connection Refused." That's at least some headway.

I haven't the foggiest why it would refuse the connection (I'm using the
Personal Edition, latest version) - Originally, it was working, then just
quit. After three weeks of timing out, now it refused the connection -
NOTHING has changed. I'm using DynDNS and the updater has no problem finding
the public and local address. Even if I try making the connection from
within the network now, I get the refused error.

I've checked the permissions, shares, etc. What am I missing???

Ok, I just had the better half go to the RealVNC website and the test page -
even though the server is set for ports 5900 and 5800 (Java) - it FAILS.

So, this has to be what the problem is... but how do you fix THAT? Under
UNIX, I'd have a good idea what to do, but on Win2K, I've no idea.

Re: Connection Refused

2006-04-24 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Double checked them both - The Updater (the one recommended by DynDNS)
reports the correct IP and I talked to my ISP (Charter) and they claim they
are blocking no ports. As I said, it worked for quite a while (about 2
months) and during that time, my IP hasn't changed

Jim:
Can you double-check your External IP to make sure it matches the dynamic
name? Also, is there any possibility your ISP is prohibiting the connection?
Some ISPs will block "common" ports for known services.

It's a LynkSys 614+, and it doesn't say "not accepting" - that would have

As I said, the Updater is working perfectly.

Re: Connection Refused

2006-04-24 Thread Jim RabidWolf
I think the thing that bothers me the most is that it worked for nearly two
months and THEN just died. I'm wondering if there wasn't one of the latest
updates from Microsoft that killed it. No software other than updates has
been added or installed in that time - this machine is pretty much dedicated
to getting info from home at my office.

Before, I could make a connection inside the home network using the "local"
IP and also the homedns.org url. Now, I can make only the "local"
connection - that still works. I even tried from the machine itslef - pretty
wild when you connect to yourself - stacks up browser windows like crazy -
like aiming a video camera at a mirror.

Unknown Server

2006-04-24 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Ok, well, I've made some improvements ... Now Port 5900 is working, but when

Any clues on this one?

Re: Unknown Server

2006-04-25 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Wez - I doubled checked them last night. I finally got the ports open by
configuring 5900 as a virtual server port on the router and then
de-configuring it. That may be what the problem is now. Again, what I feel
most disturbing is the fact the link worked for nearly 2 months flawlessly -
then just stopped. I have double checked the ports - I am using 5900 and
5800 for Java. I've lost the internal network connection, now I get an
immediate error that the "connection was unexpectedly dropped."

Hi Jim,

"Unknown server" means that the server did not respond with an appropriate
VNC(RFB) protocol version. Are you sure that you haven't configured VNC
Server to serve the Java Viewer on port 5900 and to serve VNC connections on
a different port, by mistake?

Re: connection rejection

2006-04-26 Thread Jim RabidWolf
James - I'm having a similar problem, when I go to the test site it tells me
the port is working, but unkown server. Port 5900 is open and working and
that's the port listed in the server set up. This connection worked for some
time then quit. From either in or outside the network now, it no longer
rejects the connection, but says it was unexpectedly terminated. Any
suggestions?

The router is set for pass-thru of all relayed ports (pcanywhere works, btw)

Stutz49,

That error means that you are connecting to the wrong port on your server
computer, or to the wrong computer. The error indicates that the computer
that you _are_ trying to connect to is not accepting connections on the
specified port number.

I'd considered that, but I can find nothing else wrong with the router -
went thru everything last nigh, all else works. If it is the router, then
it's only broken for VNC, and I find that hard to believe. I'll run thru the
event log again.

Hi Jim,

that your router is broken.

You should check the event log on your server computer for the incoming
connection attempts - if they are there at all then they'll indicate why the
connection closed.

Re: connection rejection -SOLVED!

2006-05-05 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Turns out to be a very simple fix and it was self-inflicted -

In Sever Options|Connections - "Access Control" - the was a "+" in that
area - I thought it was an anomoly, so I removed it - That's when the system
quit working. By putting it back in, it adds the value
"+255.255.255.255/0.0.0.0" At that point - all is well, and working again.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

My customer has vnc server running, and i give her a shortcut (or a cmd

Re: Multiple computers

2006-05-07 Thread Jim RabidWolf
Rather simply, Greg. By setting the ports as 5900, 5901, 5902, etc on the
individual computers, you can access them by addressing them as you would
the first, but adding "::x" with "x" being the last digit of the port of the
chosen computer. For instance if you address is mycomputers.dyndns.org (or
however you address them , this is assuming you're using a dynamic DNS) the
first, having 5900 as the incoming port would be addressed as
"mycomputers.dyndns.org::0", 5901 would be "mycomputers.dyndns.org::1"

The documentation does explain this well. Let me know if you need
assistance.

Raymond, under the settings of the server, connections, there should be a
"+" in the window. You can also enter 255.255.255.255/0.0.0.0 and then see
if you can make a connection (under Options|Connections, Access Control). If
you've changed the ports, you'll need to add "::" with being the
port number you've changed to.

I have RealVNC Enterprise installed on RedHat Linux 9. When I try to connect

No configured security type is supported by 3.3 viewer.

I understand from postings in this list that the encryption being used by
RealVNC Enterprise server is incompatible with these viewers. However, I see
no instructions for changing the authentication method to just password
authentication. I need that because some people who need to VNC into this
server will not want to purchase a RealVNC license. Is there a shell command I
can use to tell RealVNC that I want simple password authentication?

2006-06-02 Thread Jim Strickland
Forgive my ignorance. Once I have vncconfig running, how do I use the clipboard
to transfer files? I copied a file onto my Windows clipboard, but then how do I
transfer it to the Linux box running RealVNC server? I tried a simple paste,
but the item I copied from Windows was not there. Also, do I have to launch
vncconfig each time after launching RealVNC server, or can I set it to
automatically launch when RealVNC is launched?

You need to run "vncconfig" on the RedHat box to access the linux clipboard.

RE: Where is Clipboard

2006-06-02 Thread Jim Strickland
I have looked in the FAQ, but can't find anything. I also have a Windows
machine running RealVNC Enterprise. When I access that machine and try to copy
and paste between it and the client, I also get nothing. Obviously I am missing
something in the whole process. I just wish I knew what. I am going to formally
submit a request for help from RealVNC, because as near as I can tell, there is
next to nothing in the FAQ about copying and pasting between server and viewer.

No, however, there are two clipboards in linux/unix. Most apps use the one
VNCConfig talks to, however, some apps prefer the different clipboard. I
*think* this is somewhat of a FAQ, so maybe it's in the FAQs somewhere or if
not, probably should be.

RE: Where is Clipboard

2006-06-05 Thread Jim Strickland
Perhaps that should be made clearer in the documentation for RealVNC. I could
be wrong, but I suspect that I am not the only one having problems because we
thought ANYTHING copied to the clipboard could be transferred.

Do you know if the RealVNC folks are planning on adding any file transfer
capabilities to RealVNC? They are present in TightVNC and UltraVNC. I believe
that while it certainly is not a deal-breaker, it would definitely be a
welcomed enhancement by many.

Re: Help viewing a dual monitor setup with VNC 4.1.2

2006-07-21 Thread Jim Bohnsack
I have a dual monitor setup on my office desktop. It is set up such that
it acts as if it is one wide screen vs. the setup another person has in my
office which looks like it is 2 separate screens. I don't know if that
makes a difference.

I use the RealVNC 4.1.2 server on my office machine. When I connect to my
office desktop from home, where I only have one monitor, the single screen
"tries" to show both screens by having whichever screen "slide" over,
dragging the other screen with it. The screen I'm on depends entirely on
which of my 2 office screens I would have the mouse pointer on.

I did nothing at all to the VNC configuration on either the viewer or
server end to get this to work like that. It worked just like that earlier
with VNC 3.3.6 and VNC 4.1.1.

Hi all,

By searching the list I've determined that VNC v.4 should support viewing
dual monitor setups, however I've been unable to determine how to accomplish
this. The system that I'm trying to view has the taskbar on the secondary
display, and that is the display that I see (not sure if the taksbar's
orientation plays a part in this). I haven't found a way to view the primary
display or a way to view both displays simultaneously.

I'm running VNC on a WinXP Pro platform.

If anyone can offer any assistance at all with this I will be forever
grateful.
Thanks,

John

sending keystrokes to the target machine

I have invokes RealVNC via a shell command, and it works wondrous well.
However, I would like to send a number of keystrokes to the remote

the following, but the keystrokes apparently ended up in my application
rather than being sent to the viewer and passed on to the target. Any
ideas?

newProc = Process.Start(vncstring, paramstring)

procID = newProc.ID

.

SendKeys.Send(Keys.F12 & Keys.F12 & Keys.D1 & Keys.Enter)

Kill Service Mode Required

2007-03-19 Thread Jim Layton
Hi All,

I have 3 XP workstations that I have to check in from home VIA the
Internet on when called on. This has worked fine for over two years now.
Suddenly on one machine the only way I can connect is to have the user
kill the server and re-start it in user mode. When trying to connect I
get a pause and then a "server closed unexpectedly" error. I decided to
try installing the latest server release on that one machine but I still
get the same results. The server starts on boot but will not allow
access either from inside the internal network or from my home network.
Also of note is that the option to close the server is greyed out. I
have to have them kill it from the task manager. However once killed and
started in user mode, I can connect fine. I use no key or authentication
sans a simple password but I have also tried it with no password at all
and got identical results.

Any idea what is happening here? I have tried to "Google" this issue and
searched the lists but it is a hard to define search.

Thanks,

The server is installed on Windows Vista Home Premium.

The client is installed on Windows XP Pro

When I attempt to connect I get a message box with "read: Connection

If I click "Yes" the same thing happens.

Up until this evening I had the trial version of Personal VNC installed an
it worked great although I seem to remember something like this early on but
don't recall what fixed it. It may have just gone away.

Do I have a valid installation with the Free edition?

Re: HTTP Tunneling - WAS - Re: connecting to a port-80 VNC server

2002-09-05 Thread Jim Redman

There seems to be some confusion about what this is. Let me see if I
can clear up what and why it is different from other proxies.

You can get a proxy that will send RFB through a firewall, say
http://www.wilson.co.uk/Software/vnc/proxy/VncProxy.htm from John
Wilson. You con configure the proxy so that your firewall is listening
on some port and that is proxied through to an internal port. You
could also make this proxy listen on port 80. Now set the VNCViewer to
talk on port 80 and the RFB packets will go through your firewall.

Most outbound firewalls will let port 80 through, so configuring a
proxy on your (incoming) firewall on port 80 would appear to allow
access from within anyone else's firewall. There are two problems.

1) What you are passing across the net is not HTTP packets but RFB
packets. Some firewalls (I've met them) will filter based on content
and so anyone within one of these firewalls will not be able to access
your VNCServer.

2) If you set the proxy to listen on your firewall on port 80 you can't
also run a webserver on that port.

This code solves both these problems. The modified VNCViewer
communicates, by default, over port 80. It wraps all the RFB packets
in HTTP so the packets are honest, bona fide web requests.

The webserver running on your firewall must be running a Servlet
container and the web requests from the VNCViewer are passed to the
running Servlet (VNCProxyServet). The Servlet takes the RFB packet out
of the HTTP request and forwards this on to the real VNCServer. It
also takes RFB data from the real VNCServer and sends it back to the
VNCViewer - again in an HTTP packet.

I hope that help clarify a little.

Ctrl-c kills session in Win 2K

2002-10-02 Thread Jim Lynch

I'm running vncserver on an Nt 4.0 sp 5 system and vncviewer on a win 2k
sytem. When I'm viewing one app (toad) on NT and do a ctrl-c to copy a
highlighted line the viewer goes away. It's as if I'm sending a kill to
he window. This doesn't happen all of the time. If I restart NT the
problem goes away but comes back again, sometimes days later. Sometimes
it doesn't kill the window, but when it starts acting up it will kill
the window about 70-80 % of the time.

This seems to only happen when the toad application is the active window
but it may be happening in other apps and I have been lucky so far.

Any suggestions?

I had tried to do the same thing.. though using VNC on my TV tuner did
work somewhat.. but only occasional refresh, I resorted to using an
   application (WebMedia) available from;

 http://www.vs.informatik.uni-ilm.de

That handled the Video portion for me, but I then had problems getting
WebMedia Audio to work, so resorted to using WebMedia for the Video and
   SpeakFreely;

 http://www.speakfreely.org

   For the Audio..

This configuration can seemingly fairly lightweight network
resources/bandwidth wise server either as a TV Video & Audio server.. or
as A teleconferencing server using a WebCam and microphone instead of a
   TV Tuner as input.

   Hope this helps..

I am running XP
Linksys router (latest drivers)
IE 6.0

Yes forwarding is on for 5800 and 5900 and my firewall is turned off.

VNC through a NAT box

2003-06-19 Thread Jim C
I have three different PC's at my home that I would like to VNC into from my office.
(To keep an eye on the kids!) I use a Linksys router between our internal network and
the cable modem. What are the ports to forward in the router for VNC, and is there a
way to change them on the client & server to accommodate multiple machines behind the
NAT?

VNC, web server, IPSec

2003-07-10 Thread Jim Blancet
Hi,

I was setting up IPSec on a couple of Windows boxes tonight. And it generated
a couple of questions for me.

In the past, I have had VNCserver running on a win2k box. I had the web server
piece enabled. My router has port forwarding enabled for port 5900 and 5800. I
could connect via web browser or VNC client no problem.

I decided to setup IPSec to encyrpt data on port 5900. So I created the
profiles on 2 Win2k boxes to encrypt data on port 5900. VNC worked just fine,
via the win32 client and java piece in a web browser, and the ipsec monitor
tool in Windows indicated encyption on port 5900 between the two machines.

WIth the IPSec enabled for port 5900 on the server , I noticed that on a
machine that IPSec was NOT enabled, the port 5800 didnt work either. WHat I
get when using a browser is the java piece runs and gives me the password box.
When I enter the password and hit the logon button, the connection is dropped
because the negotiation fails.

Does vnc require port 5900 and 5800 for the web browser piece to function?

2003-07-25 Thread Jim McGhee
Hi all,
I'm running vncserver on Solaris 9 on an Ultra 5 and running the viewer
on Win2000.
When I try to start up the SunPCi Dos box from my viewer I get the messages:

Opening a SunPCi window...
[EMAIL PROTECTED] No suitable visual for SMI code to use
Segmentation Fault - core dumped
The error message is not much help to me. Can some tell me where to
start looking for this one?

Thanks,

Mac server crashes

2003-08-04 Thread Jim McGhee
Hi all,
I've been running VNC server on windows 2000 and Solaris 9 with no
problems. I've now downloaded the latest Mac version 3.3.3 on my Beige
G3 and when I start up the viewer on Win2000 it starts painting the Mac
screen and gets about half through and the window dissapears and the Mac
freezes. I saw a previous post about this and someone suggested the
patch had been loaded twice, but I don't know what that means how to check.

Thanks,
Jim

(no subject)

2003-08-27 Thread Jim Moomaw
I have VNC Service installed and running with the default settings.
When connecting from inside and outside the firewall I am able to view
the screen for 2 seconds and then the session closes. II have
uninstalled and reinstalled the VNC from the admin profile and the users
profile. I am using Version 3.3.7 and it is operating fine on other
machines. I have machines with Windows 2000 SPR-3 and SPR-4 running.
Any suggestions on how to get this machine to hold the connection would
be great.

Thanks,

Is it possible pass or save the password and inhibit inputs to the Java viewer

2003-09-09 Thread Jim Rowland
I apologize if this has been answered before but I have read several
threads stating that you could not save the password and wanted to ask
if anyone has maybe used a java script to do this.

I am in the processing writing a web page that will be used to select a
vnc server and connect to a windows 2000 machine from. The user should
not have to enter a password or choose any options just choose from the
drop down menu and a view only window pops up. I would prefer to use the
Java viewer as it keeps the whole thing web based but I need to somehow
specify the parameters for the user. I can save a session in the binary
VNC which saves the password and the user can click a shortcut of that
session, which is what I am doing now but would prefer to pull it all
together in a web page.

Anyone have any ideas or may have done something similar?
Thanks in an advance.

Re: deloader worm

2003-09-18 Thread Jim Rowland
The file you are looking for is a malformed vnchooks.dll file found in
the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder. This worm utilizes a malformed VNhooks.dll
file and other malformed dlls to accept commands over port 445 from a
remote IRC connection. A hacker connects to a specific channel on IRC
that reports the ip address of compromised PC's and then begins sending
commands to that PC via IRC to allow him to remotely control that
target.
I would recommend you update your OS to the latest patch and update your
antivirus software with the latest def files.

However, WinVNC still comes up at boot (at least the splash screen).
It must be running as a service, because I can't find it in the startup
menu (or anywhere else), and I don't see anything in the task manager
that looks like winvnc. There is no tray icon. How the heck do I get
it from starting at boot??? I can't even find the darn thing on the HD.
I run a search for winvnc and get no results.
---

You need to find the description of deloader on one of the antivirus
sites - that will tell you what files to look for. I think
vnsystask.exe was the nobbled winvnc file name.

But you mention a splash screen, which WinVNC doesn't have, suggesting
that it's not WinVNC that is on your system.

Cheers,

RE: How to make real vnc work on another port?

2003-10-27 Thread Jim Moomaw
I was looking for more information on this but did not see it..I would
like to set up three computers for VNC. If I missed the email, could
someone forward it to me.

I have a Nortel Baystack Firewall configured for VNC. How do I change
the Viewer addressing so different users can reach the different ports?
Can I direct a viewer to a specific machine through Server Publication
as I do not with the one port?

Thanks.

I think you use the display number option. By default the server is
listening on 5800, and data is transferred through 5900. By putting "1"
in
the display number, it would then be listening on 5801 and transfer on
5901.
I think that is how it works.

So if you wanted it to be on port 3 you would put 24200 in the
display
number. This is only a guess, I don't know for sure if this is how it
works.

Minh

Quicken 2000 Reports with Searching Transactions/CANCEL button di alog never finish - have to CANCEL

2003-12-03 Thread Jim . Waite
I run Quicken 2000 (QW.EXE) at my remoted/server home PC running Win2K from
my local/viewer PC running either Win2k and WinXP using the VNC Viewer.

My problem is that when I run reports that throw up the "Searching
Transactions" dialog with a CANCEL button the report never finishes. I have
to click the cancel button and then I'm back to where I was.

I've looked at the WinVNC registry settings on the server machine (my
home/remote PC) for QW.EXE and they are all 1 except use_Timer = 0.

VNC on AIX 5.1 wanting Login Screen

2003-12-18 Thread Grohol, Jim
I have downloaded and rpm'd the VNC package from IBM's AIX Toolbox for
Linux Applications.

The install went great and I can now connect to the box.

I went into my xstartup file and changed the twm to dtsession as so:

#!/bin/sh

[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources

Xsetroot - solid white

/usr/dt/bin/dtsession &

I need to know two things, and maybe one answer will kill both of my
questions. I am starting the vncserver manually using the vncserver perl
script. When I VNC to the box, I get a CDE desktop session and all is
well. What I want to achieve is to have the user enter a VNC password,
and before they get the desktop to have them get the CDE login screen
(dtlogin). What do I need to do to get this?

Second question is, how can I and what is the best way to auto start the
vncserver?
