Remember too that you can change the default template to whichever template you
like.

Styles

2015-07-02 Thread Dale Erwin
All this talk about styles has reminded me of a question I have had for
some time.

I have found no way to directly edit a template. All I've been able to
do is open a new document based on that new template, then without
naming the document or adding content to the document, I modify the
styles I need to modify and then save it again which overwrites the
original template of the same name.

So my question is: After I do this, will documents created on this
template before the template change be automatically updated to reflect
the changes in these modified styles?

Exporting to PDF

2015-07-02 Thread Lynette Britton
I've used Open Office for years and recently put my computer back to
factory condition so had to reload Open Office. When I try to export to
PDF I keep getting a Filter Dialog Box with options for font, etc that I
have no clue about. It saves to a bunch of symbols and letters. When I
click on Help in the Dialog Box, it tells me this happens when trying to
export for the first time. Something about endoding. HELP!! How can I
export and save my files to PDF? I've considered switching to Libre, but
suspect I'll get the same frustrating Dialog Box.

Thank you

Have a look at File > Templates. There you have items to save and to
edit templates. The item Organizer gives you a tool to move and copy
(hold Ctrl-key pressed) styles between templates and documents. Look
under "Command" in the Organizer to get further features, especially
setting a template as default template.

The other place to handle templates is in File > New > Templates and
Documents. When you have selected a template, then the Edit button is
enabled and you can edit the template itself.

On Windows you get this "Edit" too, when you use the Windows explorer
and right click on the file of the template. You get a lot of options.
One of them is a bold NEW. That is the default action for double click
and that generates a document based on this template. But there is
another item OPEN. And that will open the template itself for editing.

Whether a document reacts on changes in the template depends on the
fact, whether the document has stored the information about its
template. For a first hint open the document and look in File >
Properties. On tab General the last line Template should have the name
of the template. If that line is empty, the document has lost the
information from which template is was generated or it was generated
without a specific template.

For more details you need to look into the source of the document. You
can open it using an unpacker like 7-Zip. You will see a file meta.xml.
It contains the information about the template. The information is in
the node meta:template. Both the xlink:title and the xlink:href have to
be correct. So if you change a title of a template or save a template in
a different folder, then the document will not find its template.

If your problem is mostly about text documents, then you can try the
extension "Template Changer" to assign a different template to a
document. http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/template-changer

If the document has a correct template information and the template has
changed, then the document will ask you to update its styles on opening.
If the template is not available when you open the document, then you
will be ask, whether you want to detach the document from the template.

Kind regards
Regina

Dale;

Open AOO and click File->Templates->Organize
In the dialog box that opens Double click My Templates.
In the expanded list click the template you want to edit.
Click the Commands button on the far right of the dialog box.
Select Edit.

The template will open and you can make any changes you need. When done
click save and it will be saved in the My Templates area ready for use.

Keith

It overwrites the original template, only if it is saved to the same
folder as the original template. Even then, it might not overwrite it,
but silently rename the file. (I haven't yet determined if it is AOo,
EO, LibO, OOo OO4K, or OOL that silent renames the template.)

If the template was overwritten, then, when you next open a document
that uses that template, you'll see a message along the lines of "The
Template Has been updated since this document was last opened. Do you
want to update the Styles?" Clicking "Yes", updates the styles in the
document. Clicking "No", or "Cancel" (I've forgotten which program has
what) will not update the styles. At least one of the list (AOo, EO,
LibO, OOo, OO4K, OOL) removes the name of the template. (I haven't
closely examined which one of them does that.)

RE: Styles

2015-07-02 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Dale Erwin asks whether updated templates will automatically update the
template-defined styles in a document previously created with that template.

The short answer is "no."

Although the file name of a template used to create a document can be carried
in the document metadata, not all implementations seem to produce it. Also,
the template with that file name might not be locatable when the document is
opened on a different computer. If the template file has been retained, it
will appear in the "Template:" entry row of the File > Properties ... > General
dialog-box tab.

There is a Load Styles ... option on the "Styles and Formatting" dialog though
(under the rightmost button pull-down in the dialog toolbar), and it will load
styles from a document file including from a template. Experiment with that.
