It overwrites the original template, only if it is saved to the same
folder as the original template.  Even then, it might not overwrite it,
but silently rename the file.  (I haven't yet determined if it is AOo,
EO, LibO, OOo OO4K, or OOL that silent renames the template.)

If the template was overwritten, then, when you next open a document
that uses that template, you'll see a message along the lines of "The
Template Has been updated since this document was last opened. Do you
want to update the Styles?"  Clicking "Yes", updates the styles in the
document. Clicking "No", or "Cancel" (I've forgotten which program has
what) will not update the styles. At least one of the list (AOo, EO,
LibO, OOo, OO4K, OOL) removes the name of the template. (I haven't
closely examined which one of them does that.)
