NFS mounts - temporary failure in name resolution
I have installed Fedora 13 on two machines now, and am getting the same problem when mounting nfs shares at boot time on both machines. The problem happens most of the time when I boot, but not always. I have four nfs mounts and when the problem occurs the following message is displayed four times, at the "Mounting NFS filesystems:" point: mount.nfs: Failed to resolve server albacore: Temporary failure in name resolution. However, even when the messages are displayed, the nfs shares are always mounted. Although this means it is not a serious problem, it is anoying becasue the machines flag that there are boot messages that need to be looked at. Does anyone have any ideas? However editing /etc/fstab to use ip addresses produces "mount.nfs: Failed to resolve server 192.168.126.151: Address family for hostname not supported" messages. For what its worth, there are a couple of programs that are installed by yum as default in Fedora that I always select to not install and then manually install myself. My reasons for doing this include keeping my hand in at manual installation and making sure I have the latest version (not that they change often). I also install a number of programs I have written that way, too. If someone wants to do this, I think that it is a good way of learning a bit more about *computers* and certainly not something to be disparaged. Some of us enjoy messing about with our PCs. Ouch, presumably that is aimed at me for since I made the first reference to "Driver Hell" in an email I sent this morning (UK time), however I have had to keep you waiting while I went to work :-) However so I do not intend to document instances of problems with Windows drivers on this list. I have seen them (as well as problems with drivers on GNU/Linux), and a quick Google reveals one or two. I suspect that are not that far apart on our thoughts where this relates to Fedora - I certainly do not think Fedora should be blamed if hardware is no longer compatible with a new release, or if software provided by a third party such as RPMFusion stops working. I also feel that if the use of closed propriety drivers are that critical to someones computer use then they should be usimg a more stable distro than Fedora. Accessing a DNS server fails on an alternate IP address
I have a DNS server running on a physical server 192.168.126.1. However I like to split all my services onto their own IP addresses for ease of migration, so I logically assign 192.168.126.154 to this server using the following lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.local ifconfig eth0:2 192.168.126.154 route add -host 192.168.126.154 dev eth0:2 This makes it more straightforward if I ever want to move the service to a different physical server - I just reassign the logical IP address. However I cannot access the server using the alternate address. In other words: $ dig @192.168.126.1 capercaillie works as expected, but: $ dig @192.168.126.154 capercaillie returns a "no servers could be reached" message. This happens even if I take down the firewall on the server. I have got round it by getting the dhcp server to give out the ...126.1 address, but would prefer to get the ...126.154 address working. The client machines are running Fedora 13, but the server is running CentOS 5.5. Any thoughts? I did something very similar to this, although I chnaged the UID of my CentOS user, rather than create then rename a new user. This has worked fine. The following is copied from my changelog and shows what I did. Note steve is my user on the CentOS box, which NFS exports certain directories to my Fedora workstations. Steve 22/11/11 With Fedora 16 the UID and GID allocation for user accounts start from a value of 1000, instead of 500. To keep these synchronised between quail and the Fedora workstations, /etc/login.defs needs to be changed to reflect this new policy. # cd /etc # cp login.defs login.defs.old # vim login.defs ... # diff login.defs login.defs.old 25c25 < UID_MIN 1000 --- > UID_MIN 500 31c31 < GID_MIN 1000 --- > GID_MIN 500 The UID and GID for steve needs to be changed from 500 to 1000. This can't be done while anyone is logged in as steve, so I logged out of the system monitoring console and created a new user, mrcursor, to login as before using su to change to root. This was created as UID 1001 as I wanted to reserve 1000 for steve. # useradd -u 1001 mrcursor # passwd mrcursor ... Allow remote logon. # cd /home/mrcursor # cp /home/steve/.ssh/ . # chown -R mrcursor:mrcursor .ssh Now log in as mrcursor. Ensure there GID 1000 and UID 1000 don't exist. # grep 1000 /etc/group # grep 1000 /etc/passwd Show passwd and group entries for steve. # grep steve /etc/passwd steve:x:500:500::/home/steve:/bin/bash # grep steve /etc/group steve:x:500: webeditors:x:503:steve,champs,lackey img:x:506:steve,lackey Change GID and UID. # groupmod -g 1000 steve # usermod -g 1000 -u 1000 steve Show passwd and group entries for steve. # grep steve /etc/passwd steve:x:1000:1000::/home/steve:/bin/bash # grep steve /etc/group steve:x:1000: webeditors:x:503:steve,champs,lackey img:x:506:steve,lackey The ownership of any files in my home directory were changed by the usermod command. This won't fix it, but might help with the diagnosis. en.wikipedia.org resolves to 91.198.174.192 Try to ping this: $ping -c4 91.198.174.192 If this works try to access the page using this ip address, i,e, put http://91.198.174.192 as the address you want to go to into your browser. If this works it shows the problem is with the nameserver you are using. Recomend a colour laser printer
After battling for a couple of years with my cheap Dell 1320c printer I have decided to throw in the towel as I can't get a 64bit Linux driver for it. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced network colour laser printer that works well with Fedora 16 x64? Let me know what you have if it works well. From my own Fedora installation instructions: Edit /etc/default/grub and make the following changes. change GRUB_TIMEOUT to 30. delete quiet and rhgb from the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line. Run grub2-mkconfig to regenerate the grub config file. Then set the default grub entry to 0. # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg # grub2-set-default 0 I'm not sure why I needed to do the last bit, but found it was necessary for the latest kernel to be selected by default.
