HP elitedesk 705 G1 mt will not boot from dvd
I've been trying to get an HP elitedesk 705 G1 mt to boot from dvd. So far no luck. I've managed to get DVD listed as the first boot entry for both UEFI and legacy. The machine seems to try and fail. The error messages go by rather fast. I think I've seem things like "invalid header" and "no such file", but am not as sure as I'd like to be. Most recently I tried and failed with Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-39.1.5.iso Any idea what I should try next? My late girlfriend used it. I remember her password, which is why she is not on the sudo list. I do not remember either the root password or my own. -- Michael henne...@mail.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu "SCSI is NOT magic. Thanks folks. Disabling UEFI mode did the trick, though I do not understand why it was necessary. I thought that recent Fedora DVDs worked with both legacy and UEFI. If the issue is looking outside one's window, presumably gnome-screenshot is not allowed at all. I'm thinking more in principle than specifics... If xeyes could do it, so could something else, so one might forbid the practice in general. I got that. If a nefarious program can impersonate the mouse owner, said owner already has problems. I suppose the same would apply to keyboard owners. It's one thing to observe the mouse has moved, to nudge the screensaver timer, for instance. But it's another thing to track the movements precisely. Does wayland allow it? Tangentially related, nefarious keylogging springs to mind. If only one thing at a time could monitor what you type, and nothing else could pretend to be a keyboard and pass them through, software key loggers would be harder to implement. Your key entries only going into what you intend them to. Something that tried to intercept them would apparently stop the keyboard from working - your typing wouldn't appear where you expected it to, as you typed. Of course that would break global hotkeys, and on-screen keyboards. Ideas about security always seem to mess up something else. I have on occasion installed a Fedora system onto an SD card sitting in a USB SD card reader/writer. Do the install. Update. Add stuff you want. Hand it to customer. password issue with f40
I recently installed F40 from DVD. F40 and I are having a difference of opinion regarding what password I gave the initial user. F40 is winning. I find it hard to believe I typed in the same wrong password twice, but it's F40's opinion that counts. I try to login: click on the user and type in my password. F40 just goes back to the select a user screen. There is only one user. My usual strategy is to boot a live disk and to edit the passwd and shadow files directly. It did not work. Now F40 no longer even gives me a chance to type in a password. It just blinks at me and goes right back to the select a user screen. What is going on? How do I fix it? Re: password issue with f40
I just discovered something interesting: None of the accounts on my machine will login with Xorg. The option is offered, but is does not work. For F40, I had selected gnome-classic with Xorg. New accounts defaulted to gnome with Wayland. When I made a new hennebry account, even with an old home directory, it got the default and allowed me to login. I infer that the option is not stored in the home directory. Not being able to use Xorg is not good news. Last time I had trouble running videos, part of the solution was switching to Xorg. The rest, I think, was installing the H.264 decoder. I found the thread, but it does not tell me the name of the package or the name of the repo. Also, I do not know whether videos will work for me with Wayland. -- Michael henne...@mail.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu "SCSI is NOT magic. I installed FC11 on another set of partitions and got something that more or less runs. I made the mistake of not customizing the package list, so I'm stuck with gnome. Gnome is loud. Gnome is not KDE. I still can't watch hulu. I need a flash plugin and cannot remember the magic formula. Following the bread crumbs didn't help. Hula probably doesn't look good with vesa anyway. That is an interesting inference. I note that it is based on my statements considerably later in the same post. The inference was *not* based on the location of "Fool." relative to quoted material or to quote headers. "Fool." was deliberately ambiguous. That was its point. I stated that Carroll was smarter than you because Carroll noticed that "Fool." was top-posted. It was a clue. As I have little evidence regarding the smartness of Carroll, I expect one can be less smart than Carroll without being a fool. Beyond this quotation, lies only my signature lines. How do I point a mail client at Microsoft outlook?
For work, I have had to use Microsoft outlook for e-mail. I'd like to be able to get at it through either KMail or evolution on my home F13 machine. I've tried to set up both without success. That I've never used a mail client before probably doesn't help. With KMail I'm stuck when I get to Server Innformation Incoming server: Outgoing server: Use local delivery With evolution, I'm stuck when I get to the "Receiving Email" page. For server, I'm completely stuck. Which username? My name on my box or the username part of my e-mail address? -- Michael henne...@web.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu "Pessimist: The glass is half empty. Re: How do I point a mail client at Microsoft outlook?
The problem is Linux vs. Microsoft Exchange 5.5 . The help desk guy tells me that he will try to get IMAP enabled on my account. He does not guaranty success. Is there anything Linux that will talk to Microsoft Exchange 5.5? -- Michael henne...@web.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu "Pessimist: The glass is half empty. Optimist: The glass is half full.
