F12 shutdown "oddity"

2010-05-22 Thread Dick Roark
I have just upgraded to F12. Basically, no problems except when I go through
the gnome shutdown process, F12 seems to go into a suspended state, rather
than shut-down (green power LED and fan stays on). From this state I can
press the "power" button and it shuts down. This does not seem to damage
anything, as I have been required to do this several times and the system
boots fine. Is there a setting that will allow me do shutdown in the
ordinary manner? Thanks.

Yup, those are the symptoms. Your's and my computer are probably working
just fine. Maybe we'll get an update sooner or later. Meanwhile, no harm
done (so far).

Thanks for the reply,

Initially, I didn't realize one could vote on it. Apparently only four

The artwork is very nice.

XSANE image save problem

2010-06-18 Thread Dick Roark
I have reinstalled xsane. Everything but the image save function works
fine. xsane produces a good image but when I try to save it, the resulting
image is compressed laterally with the remaining width blacked out. This is
repeatable and I have seen references to the problem in the various forums,
but no solutions. Before I slog off on a conquest, does anyone have the very
probably simple solution to this problem. TIA.

Dual-boot with separate HDDs.

2010-07-12 Thread Dick Roark
My main Linux box has suffered a motherboard failure. I am contemplating
just moving the HDD to the XP machine and setting up dual boot. If this
isn't satisfactory, then it's a new motherboard. I could boot by selecting
the desired disk using BIOS. Is it possible have GRUB select the OS (disk)
at boot-up and go from there?

Thanks.

Re: Dual-boot with separate HDDs.

2010-07-12 Thread Dick Roark
G'mornin! I've already added the disk from blackie (he has the bad mboard).
The F12 needed a reinstall, so that's going on now. It turns out that it
isn't too bad (but it isn't too elegant either) specifying the disk in BIOS
at boot. When I get everything working (should be today) I will get into a
more elegant boot-specifying system. (/etc/grub.conf).

Why am I not surprised that you were the first geek responding to my SOS?

Will keep you posted, as always.

Thanks,

DH

Eventually I have tried every combination for the disk/partition on the NTFS
disk. While the "Windows XP" option always appears in the GRUB options, the
option fails each time with something like "disk not found". When that
happens, I can still select the Fedora kernel and away we happily go.

Sorry for the bother and thanks for anything.

Recent migrant (from Windows) having trouble with LAN install

I have managed to get my laptop and desktop to successfully ping each other

ought* to be easy. I have spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to get
the actual LAN installed complete with GUI. At this point, the end result
wanted is simply to exchange files.

Problem controlling display/screen with xorg.conf

2010-09-20 Thread Dick Roark
Along with (apparently) other OPs, I am having problems with my F13 screen.
Fedora works well but I am not able to configure a 1280x1024 display. I have
generated xorg.conf using system-config-display. When I put it in the X11
folder and reboot, the system stops short of booting a kernel and stops in a
non-GUI mode. With a clean install, I am able to install F13 with a 1024x768
and smaller displays. From the postings, I can see that others are having
the same problem. My last attempt was from an nicely working 1024x768
system. I generated xorg.conf using system-config-display, edited it to
incude 1280x1024 and placed it in X11. When I rebooted, the system came up
in a non-GUI init. I hope someone can supply the last step to this puzzle.
Thanks.

Regarding F14: In addition to the picasa problem, I'm also having trouble
with MySQL. This evening I regressed to F13 and everything works just fine.
I'm not a production shop, so I'll hang out with F13 for a few months and
try again. No harm done. Thanks to everyone to responded.

Problem with NetworkManager (self-inflicted)

2011-01-31 Thread Dick Roark
It all started with Puppy Linux 5.2. I setup a LiveCD and jumped in to get
familiar with it. I had some trouble with connectivity. I eventually got
around to trying my linksys Wireless-G dongle. This showed some promise
although I was unable to find the correct Puppy driver for the dongle and
eventually removed the Wireless-G and shelved that project. Later on, I
tried to log on with Fedora and found that NetworkManager was now unusable.
Okay, after fiddling around with it for a while, I did a complete reinstall
of Fedora (including reformatting the disk) and low-and-behold
NetworkManager still doesn't work. I would have thought the Fedora reinstall
would have installed the correct driver but apparently it didn't. I am able
to send this because I have plugged the Wireless-G back in. (aargh!) Has
anyone ever seen this sort of thing?

Actually, I think it's a hardware problem with the Dlink PCI wireless card.
Reinstalling NetworkManager was the first thing I tried. I've done two cold
reinstalls with the same results. The Puppy Linux is a live CD. By now,
there are no remaining traces on the Puppy Linux. I'm going to remove the
Dlink card and have a look at it. Once in a blue moon, even reseating a
card makes a difference. I don't believe it's a Fedora problem because on
both the reinstalls the Wireless-G USB dongle works just fine. To me, it's
just gotta be a hardware problem. I expect to fix it today. Will keep you
updated.

The problem *did turn out to be the wireless PCI card*. Took it out,
cleaned it, put some Pro-Gold on the contacts, reinstalled it and we're off
to the races.

DVD-RAM problem on Acer 3212 laptop

2010-01-21 Thread Dick Roark
I have installed Fedora 11 on my Acer 3212 (3210) laptop. I am having
trouble fully accessing the DVD drive. (Matshita UJ-840). I can mount the
DVD image but it is returned as blank. However, I am able to boot from the
drive. I was surprised that I could write to a blank CD but cannot read CDs
or DVDs which were made with Win XP. I have been looking for a Linux driver
for the device but so far no luck.

Can anyone point me in a better direction?

Thanks.
