Public bug reported:

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.10
Release:12.10

2) apt-cache policy fglrx

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068665] Re: xorg crash

2012-10-21 Thread Diggory
Since upgrading from nvidia-current (304.51.really.304.43-0ubuntu1) to
nvidia-current-updates (304.51-0ubuntu1), I haven't experienced this
again (at least, in the last day), so perhaps it's a bug in the older
nvidia driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1067320] Re: [fglrx] VT cursor is visible and blinking on top of Unity

2012-10-21 Thread Senno Kaasjager
I have the same issue, in the login screen and while typing my
credentials, I see the cursor move, and also sometimes after login.
Sometimes, after I entered my credentials and try to login (hit enter,
or click with the mouse), I'm not logged in, but the login is shown
again, like it has reset (shows black screen, then goes back to login
screen). Then the issue is gone and I can login normally.

Also, when the issue is after logging in and I logout, then the issue is
gone as well. So, it seems the logout resets something that fixes this
issue. For me anyway, maybe others can confirm this.

It does not happen all the time, though, but so far since the upgrade to
12.10 it happens more often than in 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 937325] Re: jockey doesnt install fglrx kernel module on precise

2012-10-21 Thread Jochen Fahrner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 873058 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873058

I did a fresh install of 12.04 and then tried to install fglrx-updates
through jockey. Jockey ended with an error. I attached the jockey.log.

Installation through synaptic was ok and fglrx is working now.

This bug confuses new users and should be fixed.

present in some web pages such as, YouTube , Facebook.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer

2012-10-21 Thread Sergey Prokhorchuk
@Christopher M. Just want to add that AMD APP SDK
(http://developer.amd.com/tools/hc/AMDAPPSDK/Pages/default.aspx) cannot
use GPU as OpenCL device if open source video driver is used. In Ubuntu
11.10 I use proprietary AMD driver and APP SDK detects two OpenCL
devices - CPU and GPU. In 12.10 with open source driver only CPU device
is detected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1063156] Re: (EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

2012-10-21 Thread Willem Sonke
Same problem, indeed nothing can be done anymore except for using the
SysRq magic keys to reboot the computer. It happens about half of the
times for me when I leave my computer and come back after an hour.

I noticed that it seems to help to lock the screen manually before
leaving, but I am not sure of that yet.

When the lockup has happened, the laptop's fan is running on full speed
continuously.

I attached the relevant part of my Xorg.o.log.old. It looks the same as
the original reporter's, but it also contains the following:

[ 7033.144] [mi] These backtraces from mieqEnqueue may point to a culprit
higher up the stack.
[ 7033.144] [mi] mieq is *NOT* the cause. It is a victim.
[ 7122.618] [mi] EQ overflow continuing. 100 events have been dropped.

Using Kubuntu 12.04 with the proprietary fglrx drivers. My laptop is a
HP Elitebook 8540w.

Same thing happens with the AMD video drivers, and I figured out the

It's pretty absurd though that a bug like this can make it through

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069186] Re: problem with backlight

2012-10-21 Thread Rafał Ochmański
I'm also affected by this on Ubuntu 12.10, a workaround is to set the
desired default backlight brightness by adding

# brightness fix after boot
echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

before exit 0

in /etc/rc.local. 0 is the minimum, usually, 0-15 can be used.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069299] Re: 1002:9613 fglrx-installer not working

2012-10-21 Thread Dave Lentz
It's not an error with fglrx. Your GPU (RadeonHD 3100) is no longer supported
by recent versions of fglrx:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_catalyst_legacy2&num=1
The "legacy" version of Catalyst 12-6 supports your card, but it only supports
kernel <= 3.4 & Xserver <= 1.12 and, therefore, is not compatible with Ubuntu
Quantal/12.10

Basically, either Ubuntu offered to install fglrx for you (and the bug
should be reassigned to ubuntu-drivers-common package because that
shouldn't happen) or you installed fglrx on your own accord (and the bug
should be marked Invalid).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066245] Re: Graphics some times runs very slow

2012-10-21 Thread Giordano Battilana
Thanks for the suggestions.
I upgraded my drivers to version 304.48 and the problem didn't go away.
As a side note, I had to do it from the console, the graphical tool was giving
me errors when trying to install the experimental package.

My impression is that some regression in mesa or a similar package that
was recently updated is causing the slow graphic performances.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069357] [NEW] Hardware keys change backlight brightness in much larger increments/steps than expected

2012-10-21 Thread Rafał Ochmański
Public bug reported:

SInce the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10, hardware keys for regulating
backlight brightness (fn+f4, fn+f5) change brightness in large
increments, even though much finer control is available both through the
Brightness and Lock dialog in Settings and by just setting the value in
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness, for example:

# echo 1 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness accepts values 0-15, the
default step seems to be 3 instead of 1 as expected, and as it was in
Ubuntu 12.04.

Partial workaround is to disable brightness switch

# echo -n 0 > /sys/module/video/parameters/brightness_switch_enabled

which cuts the step to 2. Moreover, adding kernel parameters
"acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=legacy" allows for even finer control in
the Brightness and Lock dialog in Settings (finer than those 16
settings, including completely turning the backlight via the brightness
slider) but breaks the hardware keys functionality completely.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069357] Re: Hardware keys change backlight brightness in much larger increments/steps than expected

2012-10-21 Thread papukaija
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can
start working on this bug.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary
information:

apport-collect 1069357

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib
package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-
launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report.

If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the
following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or
tar/zip-ed).

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in
advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069231] Re: ubuntu 12.10

2012-10-21 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description
didn't include enough information. At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Note that your video card is no longer supported by proprietary fglrx/Catalyst
driver.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_catalyst_legacy2&num=1
If you were expecting Ubuntu to offer you the option of installing
fglrx/Catalyst, it's not going to happen anymore unless AMD updates their
legacy driver to support newer kernels/Xservers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer

2012-10-21 Thread pcworld
I know someone who had the same problem on Ubuntu 12.10 (freh installation)
after installing fglrx[-updates], missing the Unity taskbar and
close/minimize/maximize buttons in windows (possibly the whole window
decoration).
I think his problem was fixed by installing the Linux kernel headers.
Maybe fglrx/fglrx-updates lack a dependency in the control file (i.e. the
kernel headers)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 896922] Re: Lenovo L520 - "psmouse.c: touchpad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync" and stops working for seconds

2012-10-21 Thread TheGhost
I can understand you MeneM. I have this bug since I bought my Laptop (3 Ubuntu
releases ago).
Also I responded to a lot of bug reports concerning this issue on Launchpad.
The reaction is all the same: "Please file a new bug report". It ridicolous.
Why should I file a new bug report for the same issue, with the result, that
all the other reports are beeing closed because they lost the attention,
because we have thousand of new bug reports. It's no wonder why every Ubuntu
package has this much bugs here on Launchpad. I am really tired of this
process. I just want my Laptop to work well with Ubuntu.

All in all, it seems that this issue is never going to get fixed by the
Kernel Team. So what, I will file this bug at the upstream Kernel
bugtracker, maybe people are more interested in a solution there.

So please, go on close this bug report or let it rot, like all the other
bugs, concerning this issue.

@pcworld No my friend... I tried installing the linux source and the

with Ubuntu 12.10 and Nvidia drivers (where the system went into a very
low graphic mode after installing the drivers. The windows were
stretched). For the Nvidia problem, installing linux headers fixed it.
But not for the ATI issue :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069444] [NEW] nVidia driver is under-clocking GPU

2012-10-21 Thread James Christie
Public bug reported:

This bug has been present for me in all driver versions supporting my
GPU in both 12.04 and 12.10, the clock frequencies have been the same. I
am using a GeForce660m, which is supposed to have a graphics clock of
835mhz and a memory clock of 4000mhz. The nVidia power-miser settings
list only the following options:

0 - 405mzh core, 405mhz memory
1 - 405mhz core, 800mhz memory
2 - 405mhz core, 2000mhz memory

There's at least one other person with my same card having the same
issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2067648

I don't know what the power-miser settings are supposed to be, but all
three having the same clock speed and memory topping out at half of it's
maximum speed seems very wrong.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069299] Re: 1002:9613 fglrx-installer not working

2012-10-21 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Dave Lentz, thank you for your response. Regarding your comments
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1069299/comments/2
 :
>"It's not an error with fglrx."

Yes, it is.

"Your GPU (RadeonHD 3100) is no longer supported by recent versions of
fglrx:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_catalyst_legacy2&num=1
"

For this bug report, quoting phoronix, quoting any other website that
isn't AMD's, or not directly quoting from a AMD representative for this
problem is, at best, conjecture.

So, let us talk about the facts. If one goes to the website
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and inputs Notebook
Graphics
Radeon HD Series -> Mobility Radeon 3100 Series -> Linux x86 -> button Display
Results one is brought to
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeon_linux.aspx
 . As per this website:
"These updates will focus on resolving application specific issues and critical
updates."

Not being able to use the driver, for whatever reason, is a critical
issue.

As per the download page for 12.6
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/12/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?os=Linux%20x86&rev=12.6
one will see the release notes link
http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/Catalyst_11.10_Linux_Installer.pdf which mentions
the minimum system requirements:
"Minimum System Requirements
Before attempting to install the AMD Catalyst proprietary driver, the following
software
must be installed:
 XOrg 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5 or 7.6"

Now, if you want to make the argument because I have an xorg version not
specifically mentioned, then the driver won't work, while this argument is also
conjecture, then it won't work for _any_ card in Quantal, irrelevant to the
card model:
apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.7+1ubuntu4
  Candidate: 1:7.7+1ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Hence, we would have a bigger problem then just it doesn't work for me. It
won't work for anyone in the Ubuntu Community using Quantal. Hence, this could
be marked Importance Critical due to how this has "Has a moderate impact on a
large portion of Ubuntu users" as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance.
As well, potential duplicates have already been filed prior to my bug report
about this exact issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1068661

Next minimum requirement:
"Linux kernel 2.6 or above"

I have this:
uname -a
Linux moniker-PC 3.5.0-15-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 24 20:37:59 UTC 2012
i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Next minimum requirement:
"glibc version 2.2 or 2.3"
apt-cache policy libc6
libc6:
  Installed: 2.15-0ubuntu20
  Candidate: 2.15-0ubuntu20
  Version table:
 *** 2.15-0ubuntu20 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

same point about no cards would work as noted above.

"POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D applications"
I'm not knowledgable enough to comment. However, same point about no cards
would work as noted above.

Regarding the rest of your comments:
"Basically, either Ubuntu offered to install fglrx for you..."

I use Xubuntu and jockey/jockey-gtk doesn't work. Despite this, this is
not required as I installed fglrx from the Ubuntu repositories as per
the already attached install log
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/120439929/fglrx-installer-log .

"(and the bug should be reassigned to ubuntu-drivers-common package
because that shouldn't happen)..."

See above.

"...or you installed fglrx on your own accord (and the bug should be
marked Invalid)."

This bug report is only focused on fglrx installed from the Ubuntu
repository as previously mentioned.

However, in an attempt to WORKAROUND this problem, I uninstalled fglrx
from the repos, reported this bug, and installed the driver downloaded
directly from AMD, which also does not work. For more on the problem
with the upstream release please see
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625 .

In spite of all this, please do not comment further on this bug report
unless asking for debugging information or providing a patch to fix this
problem.

Thank you for your understanding.

It's hard for anyone in the Ubuntu Community to fix your problem if it
does not have all the minimum requirement information requested
previously of you in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-
xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/896922/comments/17 , in order to get this bug
report marked Triaged. For more on Kernel Team bug policies please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Triaged_Bugs .
For more on the Status Triaged please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status .

"So what, I will file this bug at the upstream Kernel bugtracker, maybe
people are more interested in a solution there."

If you are using a Ubuntu kernel, not a mainline kernel, it's not
considered an upstream issue. For more on this please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream
.

Cannot upgrade to 12.10 because on update it tells me i can experience
graphic problems. I've got an optimus pc, intel graphics with NVidia
GPU. Untill now i used the intel graphics without problems. I also tried
uninstalling bumblebee, but i suspect the problem has to do with some
kind of upgrade to the intel graphics / xorg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068411] Re: 1002:9712 fglrx driver doesn't recognize my ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series

2012-10-21 Thread Emiliano
Javascript or any app that uses 3D acceleration gets a penalization in
frame rates.

"do you have problem(s) with the open source drivers provided by default that
fglrx-installer was ment to address for your
applications?" Can you rephrase that sentence? I didn't fully understand your
question.

I tried to contact AMD directly, besides being ridicusly annoying and
confusing, I will try again.

Thanks for your support Christopher.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068471] Re: Blank screen on boot.

so the prompt is before the actual login screen (full disk encryption?)?
If so, it's not an xorg bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2012-10-21 Thread mikewhatever
I've been tesing Unity for several days, with 12.04, Nvidia 295.40, and
can also attest that the original problem is not present, and no
segfaults either.

Hardware:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G72M
[GeForce Go 7400] [10de:01d8] (rev a1)

Had to disable the blacklisting first by adding UNITY_FORCE_START=1 to
/etc/environment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069299] Re: 1002:9613 fglrx-installer not working in Quantal

2012-10-21 Thread Dave Lentz
Quick note: bug 1068661 is for a RadeonHD 6000-series card and isn't the
same as this one.

Yeah, I see those other bug reports where you keep claiming that any source
that's not the AMD website is "conjecture." The AMD site is not infallible and
is not intelligent enough to prevent you from installing an incompatible driver
(just like Synaptic or software-center). As an experiment for you: put a Radeon
X1600 in your system, and go to the AMD website. Good luck trying to install
the ancient Catalyst 9-3 driver on anything later thean Hardy/8.04 (even though
you meet the minimum requirements)...
To take your logic further, you could file a bug against the nvidia package
when you download the nvidia driver on your system and it doesn't work (even if
you don't have an nvidia card). Anyway

Ubuntu does not support installing drivers from the AMD website, so your
mention of Catalyst 12-6 is moot, unless you want to make a wishlist bug
asking Canonical to offer the 12-6 Legacy driver. That would be helpful
to a lot of users, and I hope it happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath
based on how AMD handled this last time (Catalyst 9-3).

Conclusion: this "bug" is Invalid because the user installed the wrong
driver on his/her system (just like if an intel user installed the
nvidia driver) If you wish, please file a new bug requesting a new
package (fglrx-legacy-installer or something like that).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069299] Re: 1002:9613 fglrx-installer not working in Quantal

2012-10-21 Thread Christopher M. Penalver

My posts are in line with the Code of Conduct.

Regarding
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1069299/comments/5
 :
>"Quick note: bug 1068661 is for a RadeonHD 6000-series card and isn't the same

As I said, potential duplicates.

As we both know, this bug report is not seeking a fix for the upstream
release but the one in the Ubuntu repository. As well, this is an fglrx
regression because it worked in Lucid for this hardware.

>"To take your logic further, you could file a bug against the nvidia
package when you download the nvidia driver on your system and it
doesn't work (even if you don't have an nvidia card). Anyway"

I've never presented such logic and asking for such an experiment is
ridiculous.

>"Ubuntu does not support installing drivers from the AMD website..."

We both knew this already.

>"so your mention of Catalyst 12-6 is moot, unless you want to make a
wishlist bug asking Canonical to offer the 12-6 Legacy driver."

I, and the rest of the Ubuntu Community, are only looking for the "It
just works." experience one comes to expect when using Ubuntu software
from the repositories. If this report is deemed a Wishlist by the
maintainers of fglrx https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-devel-discuss-lists ,
for whatever reason(s), then so be it. At least the regression is being
dealt with.

>"That would be helpful to a lot of users, and I hope it happens, but I
wouldn't hold my breath"

Fair enough! :D

>"based on how AMD handled this last time (Catalyst 9-3)."

Could you please expand on this point?

>"Conclusion: this "bug" is Invalid because the user installed the wrong
driver on his/her system (just like if an intel user installed the
nvidia driver)"

This conclusion is flawed. When I install fglrx in Quantal, just as I in
Lucid, it should still work, in whatever implementation would be
supported/required. It doesn't.

"If you wish, please file a new bug requesting a new package (fglrx-
legacy-installer or something like that)."

Please stop wasting my time asking me to file additional, frivolous
reports. As well, please stop Status jockeying this report. It's valid,
unless the maintainers say otherwise.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1069299] Re: 1002:9613 fglrx-installer not working in Quantal

2012-10-21 Thread Dave Lentz
>>"This conclusion is flawed. When I install fglrx in Quantal, just as I
in Lucid, it should still work, in whatever implementation would be
supported/required. It doesn't."

Speaking of flawed conclusions, why would you believe this when
precedent shows the opposite? Going back to the Radeon X1600 example,
fglrx worked fine for that card in Hardy, but did not in Lucid, and AMD
never updated their 9-3 Legacy driver for use with newer kernels and
Xservers.

>>"I, and the rest of the Ubuntu Community, are only looking for the "It
just works." experience one comes to expect when using Ubuntu software
from the repositories."

The open-source driver works out of the box. If you absolutely must have
fglrx, then you'll have to use Precise, which is supported for 4 more
years.

>> "Please stop wasting my time asking me to file additional, frivolous
>> reports.
I'm asking you to file a valid report against the correct package that takes
reality into account. The reality is that fglrx versions past 12-6 no longer
support RadeonHD 2000-4000 (if you really don't believe me/phoronix or anyone
but the AMD site, then apt-get source fglrx and look at the PCI ID's) and
Ubuntu 12.10 uses code based on Catalyst 12-9 beta. So you're actually 100%
correct that fglrx doesn't support your card (and no one's going to "fix"
that). The best you can hope for is the legacy driver being updated to use
newer kernels/Xservers.

>> "As well, please stop Status jockeying this report. It's valid, unless the

I would encourage you to stop changing the status, but I can see that the "you
can lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink" adage probably applies
here. Your bug is "won't fix" at best, but it seems you can't accept that
reality. Good luck with that

fglrx no longer supports your card. If you want to use fglrx, you will
have to use Ubuntu Precise/12.04

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068661] Re: Unity does not load after installing fglrx-installer

2012-10-21 Thread Bartosz Majsak
I'm also affected by this problem. 6600M dual-gpu with i7. Can install
ati drivers, but then unity is broken - windows are withouth any borders
and buttons and you can switch windows / workspaces etc. Using open
source drivers keeps my discrete gpu spinning and overheating.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066313] Re: Firefox has not hardware acceletration at all with proprietary drivers

2012-10-21 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
razor7, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to
help make Ubuntu better. However, amd-driver-
installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64 is not a software package provided by
the official Ubuntu repositories. Because of this the Ubuntu project can
not support or fix your particular bug. Please report this bug to the
provider of the software package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu the following pages should be informative:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1025488] Re: fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘do_mmap’]

2012-10-21 Thread Alessandro Polverini
I've this vga:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
RS880 [Radeon HD 4250]

and I'm unable to use ubuntu any more, at startup I get an error that
tells me to use lower resolution but it locks there.

I installed proprietary drivers (tried both with fglrx and fglrx-updates) but
when I run aticonfig --initial
I get:
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

Is there anything I can do to regain use of my pc except reinstall the
old version?
