[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-18 Thread Jean-Paul Argudo
Hi there,

Possible fix? At leasts works well for about 2 hours now:

» Kubuntu PRECISE (12.04) 64
» Intel I7
» 6 gb Ram
» GTX 560 Ti2 x2 in SLI
» xinerama (3 24" monitors)

Installed newest NVIDIA proprietary driver (NVIDIA-Linux-
x86_64-295.59.run) + reboot

kdm restarted then X crashed:

Then I apt-get update & apt-get upgrade, with this newest packages,
since my station was shutdown since 2 weeks now, waiting for a possible

Restarted kdm, loggued, working now for 2 hours

I encourage others here to download LATEST nvidia proprietary driver,
upgrade every possible package (see there is xorg stuff, flash & others
here...), and report if this fixes something for you or not.

Hope this helps !

2012-06-18 Thread Luis Henriques
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel for Precise in
-proposed solves the problem (3.2.0-26.41). Please test the kernel and
update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the
tag 'verification-needed-precise' to 'verification-done-precise'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be
dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 983066] Re: External Monitor Causes Ubuntu to Hard Freeze

2012-06-18 Thread Alexander Makarov
Almost same with my Dell latitude E4300.
When I boot with an external monitor attached, system locks right after login,
I see just a wallpaper and frozen mouse cursor. Caps lock led does not react
and nothing is written to syslog after login.
But when I plug external monitor after a successfull login, everything is ok.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-06-18 Thread Bernhard
I downgraded to NVIDIA 275.43 and the problem is gone, so it appears to be a
problem with recent Nvidia drivers.
I don't know of a good way to downgrade though, I just removed nvidia-current
and nvidia-current-updates, blacklisted nouveau module as well as plucked it
from initramfs and installed the 275.43 nvidia drivers from nvidias homepage.
Obviously that kind of hack won't survive a kernel upgrade, I just did it to
check if an older nvidia driver would indeed alleviate the troubles.

I discovered that if I plug an external display, the two displays (the

I reboot with only one display : same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 757486] Re: [NVIDIA] Severe visual distortion in Unity3D, Unity2D and Gnome Shell

2012-06-18 Thread Mike M
Sorry for the delay but I think I've finally got to the bottom of this
issue... It was a dieing graphics card. The problem only manifested when
using 3D features which is why it started when I used Unity instead of
gnome but the problem happened on all graphics accelerated functions,
including when trying the same things in a dual boot windows install.
Changing the graphics card has fixed all of the problems. Apparently
this is fairly widely experienced problem with Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS
cards.

Thanks all for your patience and help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1013171] Re: Many package hooks not ported to python3

2012-06-18 Thread Martin Pitt
Seconded what Dmitrijs says. Instead of

-print >> sys.stderr, 'ERROR (dkms apport): both -m and -v are required'
+print('ERROR (dkms apport): both -m and -v are required', file=sys.stderr)

use something like

  sys.stderr.write('ERROR... required\n')

(i. e. add the explicit \n at the end). This will work with both Python
2 and 3. Alternatively, use

  from __future__ import print_statement.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens

2012-06-18 Thread dan_linder
When it was happening to me, I believe an alternative was to login via SSH
and kill the X11 desktop session (including the display driver). In my
case it was usually quicker to login and just issue a reboot command.

FWIW, after getting the latest NVidia video driver for my three-screen
system and not running "synergy", I haven't had the issue in a long time.
But, I'm pretty aggressive about keeping updated - I switched to 12.04-x64
about two weeks after release, previous releases were similar.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1011698] Re: Performance problems with Nvidia driver

2012-06-18 Thread rmcd
The slowdown problem persists with the 302.17 beta driver, downloaded
from the x-swat/x-updates ppa and installed using jockey-gtk.

I should add that I am running two graphics cards powering two 1920x1200
displays. My original configuration had one of the two monitors rotated,
but the problem occurs whether this monitor is rotated or not.

I want to repeat that this same hardware worked normally under 10.04.

2012-06-18 Thread Duncan Ferguson
I am also affected by this exact same issue

04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV44 [GeForce 7100
GS] (rev a1)

This card is used to drive two LCD screens for standard gnome shell
configuration in 12.04

when i try using the normal nvidia-current package or the one from the
ppa (with version 302.17) my desktop freezes. Last few times this has
locked the whole machine meaning i needed to pull the plug to get the
system back up. I have purged the nvidia-current package and now have
LCD mirroring on my screens (not very useful for me). This did not
happen before i upgraded to 12.04.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1004983] Re: X.org segfaults when exiting window manager

2012-06-18 Thread Andreas Korth
I found this report while I was searching for a solution for a quite
similar problem. I think it’s the same.

For playing games I start an xserver from tty1 with (simplified) “xinit
/usr/bin/xterm "$@" -- :1”. If I try to close the session by just typing
“exit” in the xterm window of the second xserver the screen blanks
immediately and even the LCD-backlight turns off. The only way out is
Magic SysReq (R-E-I-S-U-B). The screen comes back to life after killing
processes (I-Key) showing the white cursor.

I attached the related lines of syslog. The lines with “XINIT-TEST” are
generated by myself with the logger command.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1014775] [NEW] Completely garbled video in X with nouveau with NV31M (Geforce FX Go5600)

2012-06-18 Thread Oisín Mac Fhearaí
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 12.04, the display become so garbled as to be
unusable. I have to append the boot parameter "nomodeset" which
apparently disables nouveau completely, so graphics are unaccelerated.
This also happened with a LiveCD, which means Ubuntu does not work "out
of box" with this old machine, an Acer Aspire 1705SMi.

After GRUB and without nomodeset, the screen goes blank (dpms mode 3)
for about 35 seconds before returning in unreadable-multi-colour-oil-
slick form. I'm not sure if the problem is with the xserver driver or
the kernel nouveau module, which seems incredibly outdated (I saw a 3
year old build date in a log?!) in the latest Ubuntu.

Attaching dmesg and Xorg.0 (without nomodeset).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1014782] [NEW] Xorg crash with floating evdev mouse pointer

2012-06-18 Thread bijwaard
Public bug reported:

Xorg crashes on my system when I configure an InputDevice with a floating
mouse, since I'm trying to create a multiseat system (using 2 videocards, 2
mice, 2 keyboards in one PC, see http://linuxgazette.net/124/smith.html ). A
floating keyboard in an InputDevice section works as a charm and isolates the
keyboard to the specified 'seat'. When the "Floating" option is set to "false"
both mouses move the cursor in both seats.
When "Floating" option is set to "true" i get a segfault in positionSprite of
../../dix/getevents.c:951, I'll attach the full backtrace.

Ok, so as an additional piece of info the issue happens as well on a
fedora 17 liveCD so it's not an Ubuntu patch or an issue specific to a
distro

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777882] Re: xmodmap not honored

2012-06-18 Thread Johann Gail
I can confirm this problem too on precise XUbuntu (12.04), 32bit
edition.

I tried to remove the lock from the caps lock, i.e. to behave it as a
normal shift. With xubuntu 10.10 I had the following working solution:

clear Lock
add shift = Caps_Lock

After the update to precise pangolin 12.04 on the same notebook this
doesn't work anymore. I had to change the entries in .Xmodmap to:

remove Lock = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Shift_L
add Shift = Shift_L

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777882] Re: xmodmap not honored

2012-06-18 Thread Johann Gail
After reading the previous comments I come to the conclusion that a
working solution needs a redefinition of the keycode. Each of the
working solutions have one of the following lines in it:

keycode 66 = Control_L
keysym Caps_Lock = ISO_Level3_Shift
keycode 66 =
keysym Caps_Lock = Shift_L

2012-06-18 Thread zmago
At same time is happening in many cases that fonts are not readable
anymore and pictures have some glitches... for example this page for me
looks like this (attachment) ... and problem persist until computer
freeze... if i restart everything is normal again... in log files is
nothing special about this problem... but i have to admit that computer
is barely usable with this problem because you never know when it will
freeze and when fonts will get unreadable again...

what can we do about it?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2012-06-18 Thread Jaime Alberto Silva
I'm having the same problem with an old DELL Inspiron 1420 I got running
Debian, It is reported on:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=663649

The video card is listed as:

Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller
(primary) (rev 0c)

The TV output worked fine until some years ago when it went black and
white and a few releases later video was gone.

I checked on the sources of linux 3.2 which I'm currently running
(Debian unstable) and this patch is there (line 1313).

The TV output only works when the TV is plugged at start up (when I turn
on the laptop) but the output is on black & white, no color. If I plug
the TV after the laptop is running it is not detected.

Any clues on what is wrong? maybe I need a module option or something
like that.

Thanks.

experimental-api" in the makefile and add "libdrm-omap1" in the control
file.

note that migrating to 2.6.35 or potentially the upcoming 2.6.36 would

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012851] Re: Nvidia settings doesn't save monitor config

2012-06-18 Thread Paul Pilgrim
I can confirm the same behaviour on my laptop.
I changed the permissions to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (sudo chmod 666
/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and tried again but still not able to save the setting
changes.
I WAS able to save the changes when starting nvidia settings as root (sudo
nvidia-settings).

This looks like a bug affecting the GUI that prompts for you to enter
your user password to elevate your priveleges to root - I just don't
know what that program is to report a bug for it.

Thanks. In order to direct the regression-testing effort, here's the list of
rdepends:
  scim-kmfl-imengine
  remmina-plugin-nx
  libinput-pad1
  kde-workspace-bin
  fcitx-module-x11
  x11-xkb-utils
  x11-apps
  libxklavier16
  libgnome-desktop-3-4
  libfreerdp1

Are you aware of anything that dlopens libxkbfile or does funky things
with it that should also be on this list?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-06-18 Thread Anmar Oueja
Now I can reproduce the matter 100% of the time. I have a Thinkpad X201
with Intel graphics of course.

I am running the latest and greatest packages as of June 19 1:00 UTC
including the latest 3.2-26 kernel . I get this in the log file.

*ERROR* Invalid framebuffer id.

This message is from the kernel.

At 109 messages, I assume there is enought information for somebody to
attempt a fix. As you can imagine, this has a major impact on this
issue. I hear GNOME Shell doesn't have that problem. I might end up
switching to it just so I can use my machine.
