Re: [ubuntu-uk] GetGNULinux.Org
The site does look great, nice, simple and easy to read. Linux does need a good '/switch' type site. I hope the group involved has also registered getlinux.org before someone else does. Colin On 3/21/07, Benjamin Webb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I for one would think, and I'm sure many would agree with me, that the http://linux.org website is rather ugly in design, and not welcoming or terribly explanatory to linux newcomers. http://www.getgnulinux.org is designed to change this. It explains what Linux is on a level that even non-tech types could understand and also why and how they would switch. It is a perfect site for someone who knows nothing about Linux at all. It also hopes to become a part of a promotional campaign, similar to the SpreadFirefox one. There are already banners available to link to the site with a very clear and simple message - Get GNU/Linux. As you may be able to tell from the name, the sites creator agrees with the FSF's naming suggestion, but the site does not aim to force this upon the rest of the community, and in fact uses the term Linux itself, in order to make the site more understandable for its audience. The website is run by an organisation, GNU/Linux Matters, which is soon to become an non-profit organisation in France. The site also has a community on the nuxified.org forums, which I am a member of, but I am not the site's creator. By posting this I do not want to appear a spammer. I simply want to make the ubuntu-uk community aware of this site, and would love to hear your opinions. Do you think this site is a good alternative to Linux.org, as a portal for the Linux community as a whole? Would you be interested in the idea of a Linux advocacy campaign, and would you consider putting a getGnu/Linux button on your own website/blog. Finally, the non-profit organisation plans to have "ambassadors" and "embassies" in other countries, to promote Linux on a country specific basis. Is anyone interested setting up one for the UK? I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this message on to people who are not subscribed to this mailing list, for example to the various UK LUGs. [ubuntu-uk] The need for root in a rescue situation
I recently had a corrupt HD on my Dapper desktop system and had a prompt thrown at me for the 'root password' by the minimal rescue system to allow me to do fsck and stuff. I did try the password for my Admin user but this didn't work. I was able to get things started again because, luckily, I had an old install of, as it happens, Mandrake 10.0 tucked away on a 2nd hard drive and accessible via grub. If this wasn't available I would have had a fallback of DSL on a USB key, but I couldn't think of a Ubuntu way of getting around this problem. I have, in the past, set root passwords in Ubuntu, but I really don't recall setting one for this installation. Not being the greatest security minded person on the planet, I don't change passwords very often and the then root password would have been the same as my current Admin account password which, as I said, I had tried. [ubuntu-uk] Primer on networking - any recommendations
Not of the TCP/IP type networking, but of the smb/nfs variety. I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle with 'folder sharing' over three boxes, 2 Ubuntu and 1 XP which I've set up, in a fashion, using the point and click tools. My systems have changed over time and this set up isn't now right - I don't seem to be able to add a new folder to be viewable by the other machines or delete existing 'links'. I'm so ignorant of the subject that I'm struggling even to get the right terminology out for this begging email, so what I could really do with a primer so that I can get a better idea of how it should work, then I can start to ask some sensible questions. There were two factors there, which are the same for every release. I was kind of amazed at how much some people got upset that we were telling them we hadn't released yet even though the ISO images were available. Firstly, obviously, you don't want to build the final ISO image ten minutes before release (although we came pretty close with the Warty preview ...); you want to have plenty of time to test it first. Ideally, in fact, the release candidate would be identical to the release, though this has never actually happened. Secondly, one of the things on the critical path to release is always getting the ISO images out to mirrors so that Canonical only gets mostly swamped rather than entirely swamped; thus, we put it in a hidden directory on releases.ubuntu.com for a while before the actual release and just symlink it into place near the end. Even after it's symlinked into place on the main site, we still need to get mirrors to rsync that update before we can release. This whole strategy is stymied by people getting excited and telling everyone to download early, before the announcement goes out; we send out the announcement once we're satisfied that enough mirrors have got it. So remember, if you tell everyone, "hey, the images are up, go and download them!" before the announcement goes out, chances are you're actually delaying the release! > > Just thinking if you could install a new operating system on your > > laptop over breakfast it would make good press. > > Or just install feisty and then dist-upgrade to gutsy repeatedly until > the night before or the morning of the release. Sorry to say it's more usually around the middle of the day in the UK; with Canonical's HQ in London, trying to release first thing usually doesn't work out, as there are too many things to do that day beforehand. That sort of time of day also means we have no trouble catching the European press, while the American press pick it up as soon as they wake up. Of course, this might work out OK for morning launch parties as long as they were willing to run a bit late. This may vary, though, and we try not to announce exact times in advance, otherwise you end up with the "OMG, Ubuntu is five minutes late to release!!!1!" thing, which gets annoying. :-) -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

This suggestion comes up quite frequently, but the problem is that a novice will have no idea how much space to allocate to each; there is enough variation that there's no one suggestion we can make which would be good for everyone. If they get it wrong it's a real pain in the arse to change, requiring expert help. I would much rather improve support for reinstalling while preserving /home, which is on the agenda for Ubuntu 8.04 (though it's early days and that's not a promise!). [ubuntu-uk] PC Freezing on updates with Gutsy
Hi, I'm fairly new to Linux in general, and tried out a few distros - settling on Ubuntu - which seems to me anyway - the most user friendly and visually appealing one I have come across thus far. Any ways - I was using Feisty off and on for a couple of months, and waited with baited breath for Gutsy to be released. I did a fresh install yesterday and encountered some problems initially. While copying the installer files to the PC - the installer froze up at about 82% on the configuring apt section. Aftr a few attempts (and a reboot of my router) it installed perfectly ( or so I thought). Once installed, I proceeded to install the Nvidia driver from the restricted list, and rebooted - and lo and behold my system came up at 1280x1024 resolution - something Feisty always refused to do for me. Beginning to get excited - I went ahead and popped into the Add /Remove applications area to see what googies I could add - but on opening this aaplication - the system froze completely. After about 15 seconds I could start to move my mouse again, but nothing else would work. I rebooted and tried the same thing - and the same thing happened. NExt I rebooted and tried out the synaptic package manager - which resulted in the same freezing. Also the new firefox addons manager resulted in the system freezing and locking up again. Finally (after a few google searches) I found a list of repositories, and tried via apt-get - whcih worked. But as I don't know the names of all packages and dependencies I want - this aint too good :( So - has anyone else encountered this - or does it sound like I may have a hardware fault? It's driving me nuts. I really want to ditch Windows for good, but only if it's gonna work! Cheers, Badger. --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. OK, so I have re-downloaded the iso - and the MD5sum checks out fine. I reinstalled it OK and everything looked fine - UNTIL i enabled the proprietry NVIDIA drivers for my 7200GS. I then got the same problems - exactly. Once I disabled them again evertyhing worked perfectly. I even tried using envy to install them ( www.ablertomilone.com) and the problem returned. A friend has suggested it might be an Open GL conflict somewhere along the lines, but I am at a loss on how to proceed now. Any help would be awesome :) Colin. (Or, to put it another way, it's just the messenger.) phpgroupware Suggests phpgroupware-email (and other modules), so it's not mandatory. apt does what it's told and doesn't install it by default. If phpgroupware wanted a stronger dependency so that apt would install it by default, it could use Recommends (at least as of hardy) or Depends. A Depends is stronger and would also prevent you from uninstalling the depended-upon package. If you use a more intelligent apt frontend rather than simply apt-get, you should be prompted for suggested packages. Your mistake may be simply that you're using too low-level tools which don't try to help you out as much. > The portage system allows you to specify certain flags in /etc/make.conf > (although it may have now moved!) as follows: > > USE="apache2 mysql -X ldap imap" > > The above would allow me to install a complete lampstack along with the > servers required for the DB connections and LDAP/IMAP cx simply by > typing > > # emerge -av modphp5 > > is there anything similar under ubuntu? Well, you won't find things in the same terms; binary package systems work quite differently. At the discretion of the maintainer, optional features may be packaged separately. However, in the case you quote, you can certainly achieve much the same effect since I believe all the necessary components are quite strongly modularised. Install the apache2, mysql-server, php5-mysql, php5-ldap, and php5-imap packages; then future system upgrades will preserve this. (For a prepackaged LAMP server, you may want to try 'sudo tasksel install lamp-server', which happens to fill some of your needs right off the bat.) 'what's wrong how can I fix it' Hi there!! Just a few things, - Can you see your linux box in your XP's network neighborhood? - You may need to create an entry in the lmhosts file. - Have you tried to locate your linux box using windows' search function (either by ip or computer name). - Have you tried commands like 'nmblookup -A computer name/ip address'. - You could try to check whether ports 137(default port) or 445 are open using nmap. I had a similar prob but after a bit of googling and t-shooting I now have a basic share working. My problem was that I could see the linux machine in the windows work group but not connect to it. I cannot speak with great authority on SAMBA but I would say that my entry in lmhosts as per attached link and following instructions in the other tutorials/guides helped. [ubuntu-uk] Printing problems, Breezy and Epson C66
I have a problem when trying to print to my Epson C66 in Breezy. The printer, with a USB connection, was installed and worked fine until something, possibly the printer running out of paper, brought this brief period of success to an end. I have both Gnome and KDE desktops running and I am most familiar with KDE. Under Gnome the Print Manager shows the printer as 'paused' but there seems to be no way to resume printing. Am I missing some functionality from this Gnome utility? Under KDE the Print Manager gives me the chance to enter 'Admin mode' and I can see a red border, presumably telling me I have entered the correct password. On the 'Printer' menu > 'Start/Stop Printer' I can select 'Start printer' but this doesn't seem to do anything - in fact, if I go back his menu I only have the option to 'Start printer' which suggests the printer hasn't started otherwise I would be able to 'Stop Printer'. Continuing with the KDE Print Manager, if I then select 'Print Server' > 'Restart Server' I get an error message:- Unable to restart print server. Error message received from manager: Unable to find a running CUPS server I have done nothing, to my knowledge, to stop CUPS running. Has it really stopped? I think it is still running because:- [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps aux | grep cups lp 20263 0.0 0.7 7764 3772 ?SNs 07:35 0:02 /usr/sbin/cupsd -F Now, in my Suse days, I would localhost:631 and play with the server from there. I am denied this option, which seems to be the final one to me, in Ubuntu. I have gone to the effort of adding a new entry for the same printer. This has not helped as it immediately gone into 'Paused printing' mode, like the first. So, clues please as the what to do next? I had posted this to the ubuntu-users list yesterday but my appeals for help have gone unanswered. I hope that posting again to a quieter list may grasp some attention before I admit defeat and go back to Suse. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] A:Because it's wrong! > Q: Why shouldn't I top post? -- ubuntu-uk mailing list ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk

[ubuntu-uk] ubuntu server edition
Dear all I am new to linux and to ubuntu and would like to have an ubuntu machine running as a server to communicate with a windows xp machine, I have not been able to do this because of network issues. Just before I start I would like to say that I've been reading about your screen casts which I think are a really good initiative, would you consider doing one for installing and setting up the ubuntu server edition 6.06 to communicate with a windows machine? I ask this because I am really interested in setting up a server environment but so far have not been able to. Also if after watching the screencast I get my server together then I will be able to spread the word to other computer users at college who might be able to benefit from using an ubuntu machine and LAMP environment. I have a few questions: [1] If you install ubuntu server edition 6.06 onto your machine and it cannot recognize an ethernet device or cannot set up DHCP does this mean that you will not be able to network between another machine because there is not a network capability - does this mean that you will not be abale to ping another computer? [2] If you have an inherited machine and you try to install ubuntu server edition 6.06 does it normally recognize the ethernet device and configure DHCP automatically - if not why might this be? [3] If you experienced either of the problems above what may be the problem? [4] Are there any regular meets that take place in London/Brighton where people can talk about practical problems and how to solve them? [5] Also would anyone be up for scheduling a chat session to take place over a messaging programme such as msn messenger to talk about the server edition? I read a couple of news letters ago that it was o.k. to ask for help here - hope this still holds true. Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu server edition
<< DHCP works by a machine on the network acting as a server and giving out IP addresses and configuration information for the other machines. In small networks this is often integrated wth the router. When I asked about if this was all with the same server I assumed you were trying to get an ubuntu machine to get an IP address (and other other details) from a DHCP server, and was wondering if that server might be the bit that isn't working. Looking back over more of the thread I notice that you are setting up an ubuntu server so I might have things backwards and you want the ubuntu machine to be the DHCP server? Yes, I was not looking to set up subnetworks and give out ip addresses with dhcp but to have an ubuntu machine act as a server to a windows machine. I could not even have gotten that far becasue dhcp configuration failed and was thus skipped at installation. I wanted the installation procedure to dynamically set up the networking addresses but as ethernet and dhcp both failed I was given the default loop back device, this was still no good as there was no ethernet detection. So current situe is to get a machine which passes ethernet detection [good] and dhcp configuration[good but not essential] Where can you get Xwindows from? Re: [ubuntu-uk] ubuntu server edition
oK, I'm a bit lost about what you're trying to do. I'll outline things a bit more: It was my original intention to have an old 98se machine dual partitioned so that I can have ubuntu LTS 6.06 as a server, on this server I wanted to upload files from a winxp machine. Partitioning the old machine was fine, downloading the iso image was also fine. The initial install went through o.k. but no ethernet was detected [the actual ethernet device itself]. Also DHCP failed. After DHCP failed I was given an option where I could assign/choose the network addresses myself. I did this but it was redundant as the ethernet test failed. Thus when I tried to ping the ubuntu machine either under the hostname or the ip address both attempts failed. If the DHCP step in the setting up networking is failing during boot up this is probably because there either isn't a DHCP server on the network or because the DHCP server isn't working properly (esp. if the same symptoms are seen on a couple of different machines). Regarding DHCP, to infer from what you stated above there are two possible problems; (1) - No DHCP Server/computer was detected on the network [This is true because I don't have another machine acting as a DHCP server]. (2) Could there be a problem with the installation disk itself? When you say there was no ethernet detection do you mean that the ethernet device wasn't detected or that it didn't detect the settings for the network? You can tell this by running 'ifconfig' I mean that the device wasn't detected -- Would it be possible to schedule an informal irc discussion? _ Windows Live Messenger has arrived. Re: [ubuntu-uk] uploading files ftp
Regards your suggestions I have made a directory with a chmod permission of 777. Though I cannot upload to this directory from the winxp machine. when I use the following: "put upload" this is what I get: "200: Port request successful. Consider using PASV. 553: Could not create file." [What does this mean?] -- I wonder if the command I'm using from c: prompt in winxp is incorrect. When I connect to the ftp server from the winxp machine, I connect using generic user account of "ftp" with a random e-mail address for a password: after this I use "ls -l" to see what's there which shows [porc] the directory which I created and the one text document I created. After this I use "ls -l [porc]" to list the contents of porc. Then after verifying porc is empty I try to upload the file named, "upload" [which is sitting on the winxp machine in /documents and settings/colin] with the following command, "put upload". Is this the correct command? Has it got anything to do with the fact that /var/ftp/porc and /home/ftp/porc are at different locations? The permissions shown in the contents of /home/ftp are: total 8 drwxr-xr-x- 2 root root 4096 2007-01-01 18:26 [porc] -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7 2007-01-01 16:31 send to _ Windows Live Messenger has arrived. [ubuntu-uk] ftp - chmod
Hi all cheers for the help I have tried to resolve the upload problem by: [1] Making ftp globally/world writable - this locked me out [2] Creating a directory called uploads which is globally/world writable - this did not work [3] Changing the ownership of [uploads] to ftp - still no resolve -- I checked the log file this diplayed the entries for "connecting" and "downloading" but it did not give any further info about the failed "uploads". _ Be the first to hear what's new at MSN - sign up to our free newsletters! http://www.msn.co.uk/newsletters -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/

I think Daniel is looking for a Groupware application like www.opengroupware.org. This appears to have all the features an office would need like calendars, task lists, document storage, etc. I have never installed or used it, it's just one of the first results after googling, but it looks simple enough to try it out. I think the interviews really made the show. I can't stand podcasts with just rehashed news and the general BS and swearing that goes on. The TWIT.tv network produces a show called FLOSS WEEKLY, ironically about twice a year, but the main attraction of the show is the interviews with open source people. I hope the Ubuntu-UK podcasters can get enough great interviews recorded to continue the brilliant start they have made with episode 1.
