Re: [Ubuntu-manual] \application{}, yes or no

2011-11-17 Thread mario
Totally agree.
\application should only format (if anything), and we should use \index for
terms to be indexed.

I've got my copy of "Indexing: A Nuts-ans-Bolts Guide for Technical Writers"
in my hands.

I think originally the \application macro had two effects: (1)
typesetting the application name in bold, and (2) adding the
application name to the index.

Currently, the \application macro only adds the application to the index.

If we know for sure that we'll never want to format the application
names in a special way (bold, italics, color, etc.) in the future,
then we could just not use them and they won't appear in the index.

Alternatively, I can modify the \application macro so that it does
*not* index the applications and force everyone to use the \index
macros to put things in the index themselves.

As far as indexing goes, I think it'd be useful to have someone
assigned solely to the index (and perhaps the glossary). That
person's entire job would be to index the manual and make the index
actually useful. Up 'til now, the index has existed primarily as a
'proof of concept' and isn't terribly useful. (It's unlikely that
someone new to Ubuntu is going to know the name of the application
they want to find information on.)

Kevin,

Totally. I'll start reading over the manual and taking notes on terms to add to
the index and glossary. Then, I can work through adding \index tags.

Awesome. Would you like to take over the task of indexing the manual?
It'd be useful if you could flag words that should appear in the
glossary, too. (You don't have to write the glossary entries
yourself; just flagging the words would go a long way.)

If a particular screenshot needs highlighting, Shutter works great, and is made

I would say definitely in cases where there are a lot of different
buttons/locations to look at on the screen. Or in cases where the right
button/location isn't obvious. Something like in Thunderbird, if you
want to point out the Send/Receive button, or a folder. Or in a
situation where you could re-use screenshots of the same
picture--pointing out different aspects of it. Something like the
Nautilus folder, where you'll want to point out the location of the
favorite places, folder structure, main window pane, and the menu
(global menu).

As for building it into Quickshot, if it won't take a lot of coding (or
try to turn Quickshot into a GIMP replacement), I agree that the
functionality should be put in. But, if it's going to make Quickshot a
bloated application that does things that other applications can do
better, I would say that we should use applications that are designed
for those tasks.

I'm also looking at the fact that right now, no one's developing
Quickshot, yet we're talking about adding things to it. We really need
to get people working on the application itself, before creating more
work that no one's doing. At least that's my understanding from what
I've read in the previous messages.

Have a great day:)
Patrick.

[Ubuntu-manual] Index and Glossary: Review tracking

2011-11-18 Thread Mario H. Burgos
All:

Started spreadsheet for use in organizing the terms for the Index and
Glossary.
I've started the Index work:

index_UbuntuManual<https://docs.google.com/a/petrielabs.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtkeORuPIMxsdGRaU0JqaUExZlgxaTd1NHBHeHphb2>

Some structural issues that I've noted during this:

   - Ubuntu Desktop: Combine the following subsections?
  - Search files, applications with the Dash
  - Browsing files on your computer
  - Searching for files and folders on your computer
   - Troubleshooting: Move \subsection topics to \section?

Feedback and suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Any ideas around troubleshooting the screenshot issues?
I've also played around with retaking a screen capture only to have it

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] in or on the Launcher?

2013-08-13 Thread Mario H. Burgos
Consistently applying the use (Placing an app in the Launcher, and later
clicking on the app) is required to make this work.

One looks for an app/icon "in" the Launcher.
One puts an app "in" the Launcher.
One clicks "on" an app in the Launcher.

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] Creative Commons 4.0 Release

2013-11-29 Thread Mario H. Burgos
Chris,

Just want to clarify that this is the license we are talking about:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en_US. (And the actual
legal code: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode.)

And, to confirm that we are not withholding the right of others to
adapt/use the material commercially.

Overall, looks good that Creative Commons has moved to one international
set of legal language/code.
+1 to move to Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0).
