Printing does not work in 8.04
Hello I have a problem with printing in Hardy. My bug has not been processed yet but I reported it two weeks ago. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/217787 Is there anyone else with the same problem? I cannot find other similar bugs so either I have done something to create this problem for myself or I am the only one with bug (which sounds strange). Four crashes, no apport actions
Hello I just now had four crashes. First was emerald. Noticed that my borders was missing. Manually restarted it via terminal with 'emerald --replace &'. It crashed again. Started it a third time and then it worked. Noticed segfault in syslog. Second was Evolution. I got a popup telling me "The Evolution memo has quit unexpectedly. Your memos will not be available until Evolution is restarted.". This caused some kind of problem for the desktop because I could not click on anything. I eventually found out that I could use the keyboard so I was able to use the keyboard to OK the popup and shutdown Evolution. Then it was back to normal again. Third crash just after was Firefox. Started it, entered a location and it just disappeared while the page was loading. Fourth was Seahorse. Synced my keys and pgp.mit.edu wasn't responding. This caused Seahorse to crash and I could see a segfault in syslog. On neither of these four crashes apport kicked in. Why is that? IIRC..Bugzilla does this nicely (might be the only thing it does nicely). When a bug is marked incomplete by a triager the original reporter gets a email notification (just as LP) but then when the reporter responds and presses submit, he gets a question which is something like "Did you give the developers what they needed?". That would be one way to solve it.. Ps. This is also almost how it works on LP Answers as well. I reboot my work-laptop probably once a day on average. This is because suspend is buggy and unreliable. It is always nice with better boot time but I think it's more important to fix the various suspend bugs. Resuming from suspend is also very slow in Ubuntu. Also, one other problem is that you have one time period from power on to get the login screen. Then you have a second period from logging in to be able to use your desktop. This second is always important (and there improvements can be done). Hello Just created a bug on lp[1] on a issue about that it's hard to distinguish between different applications in the bottom panel. Do you guys agree? I think this is a no brainer, it should be as easy as possible to differentiate between all your started apps to make it easy/fast to switch between them as possible. Also, maybe some people only have like 3-5 apps started but imagine if you normally have 10-15. Ubuntu 8.10 released but...
...for example these[1,2] bugs never got fixed. Too bad, Firefox is probably the most commonly used program in Ubuntu and still it works poorly since you have to be on a above-average-user-level to open commonly used file formats, save stuff to gvfs-locatation[3,4] and it crashes[5] all the time (probably mostly when flash is involved). "Open With" dialog not user-friendly 1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/18995 "Open with" dialog for unknown file type should be same as gnome's 2. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/58710 Firefox file selector should show remote shares 3. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/279193 Unable to upload files from GVFS sources 4. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/31471 651 results for "firefox crashed with" 5. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=firefox +crashed+with&orderby=-importance&search=Search&field.status% 3Alist=NEW&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSE&field.status% 3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSE&field.status% 3Alist=CONFIRMED&field.status%3Alist=TRIAGED&field.status% 3Alist=INPROGRESS&field.status% 3Alist=FIXCOMMITTED&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.has_patch=&field.has_no_package= (and add to those 651 all the bugs that are marked private, right?) I love seeing new features but It would be nice with perhaps one release per year instead of every six months to add some more stability. However, Ubuntu is still the best OS out there IMHO. Upgrading with update-manager over remote GDM
(copying text from my LP bug[1]) Hello I was about to do a distribution upgrade from 8.10 latest to 9.04 alpha yesterday. I started it via a remote GDM session (which seems to run over SSH). I got a warning that the upgrade might fail and that a second sshd was started on port 9004. Well, probably nothings going to happen I thought. After downloading all packages and upgrading for maybe 5-10 minutes my GDM session froze. I was unable to contact the client that I was upgrading, didn't even respond to ping. When I was able to check the remote client out physically I noticed that my session previously active was still running. I couldn't use anything though, nothing was possible to start. I tried to restart X but it didn't start again. I could see lots of segfaults in dmesg and ifconfig showed that there was no eth0 any more. My suggestion: Make the warning a LOT more scary! It took me a while to repair the system and my upgrade probably isn't that good because it's done mostly via aptitude and not update-manager. 1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/322482 Rgds -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
"Open With" dialog not user-friendly
This bug really needs some attention: https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/18995 It should, AFAIK, be a high priority bug and a release stopper. It is not reasonable to expect that the average Ubuntu-user is able to find the correct helper application for the file that they are downloading and want to open. If you open a file from Nautilus and select Open With > Other Application that looks just great. Why not have the same dialog from Firefox? Just pointing fingers at Mozilla doesn't resolve the problem. Firefox is in main and is the default web browser in Ubuntu. What can be done to fix this except just nagging in the Mozilla-bug? That bug is btw VERY old so I wouldn't keep my breath waiting for it to get fixed. From the bug: "Reported: 2000-10-14 14:13 PST by Stephen Moehle". Can't the Ubuntu-community write a fix and submit it to Firefox? The bug at Mozilla has a tag "helpwanted" so they seem to be open to suggestions/patches. Re: Evolution in Ubuntu

It's one thing to leave behind this package due to the confluence of LTS and a major amount of rewriting, but what is the justification for continuing to ship obsoleted versions of Evolution with every release of Ubuntu? Is this some sort of new policy decision, that Evolution will forever be left back in every release? Hi Paul. I can understand what you are saying, but is it really that important to you? I'm curious as to why it's bugging you this much. Does Evolution 2.32 have a particular feature that you require? If you're keen enough, you can probably sneak in the updated Evolution into your own system from a third party PPA or something. I'm sure the deb files are available from somewhere on the internet. It might be worth your while doing a Google search for them. IMHO Evolution is one of the buggier packages supplied as a default application in Ubuntu. I have used it pretty much every day since Feisty Fawn up until yesterday when I switched my last computer from Evolution to Thunderbird. I'm a big mail-user at work and and I use it pretty much privately also (so multiple accounts etc. I have experienced crashes from different parts of Evo pretty much once a week during these years. Sometimes the whole application, sometimes just the address-book, sometimes calendars. It's a shame, I like Evolution better than Thunderbird (GUI and feature-wise) but I'm fed up with the instability and the slowness, entering a big IMAP folder take ages compared to how it works in Thunderbird. Searching isn't indexed in a good way so it takes minutes to get search results for some queries. So I fully understand why you always want the latest version - there are always lots of bug fixed every new release. IMHO again, I think more work has to be put into Evolution or it should be replaced with another MTA. The Evo developers are doing a fine job but probably they are too few and they don't seem to use Ubuntu so therefore not a big priority to get new packages into Ubuntu. Hello I think NetworkManager should send a DHCPRELEASE when the user chooses disconnect on a DHCP-connection. This is important when using a service that only allows one IP, then the MAC/IP-combo is locked for whatever the DHCP lease-time is. Sending a DHCPRELEASE frees up the lease making the service available for another computer. Any reason why not to do this? Should I file a Launchpad bug? Hello There is a bug that causes Xorg to crash just after resuming from suspend + logging in. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/956071 There are lots of desperate comments but no word from any developer. This is really my biggest concern with Ubuntu, bug almost never gets fixed in the same version, only the next (at least not the ones I've experienced). Crashes from Unity/Xorg continues with 12.10
Hello I had lots of problems (and lots of lost data) because of this bug in 12.04: https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/xorg-server/+bug/956071 Even after that I've had an occasional Unity/Xorg crash. And it's very inconvenient every time since I always loose work when working in applications that can't auto-save etc. Now I had my first crash in 12.10 and it generated a crash-file in /var/crash: -rw-r- 1 root whoopsie 5718069 okt 22 16:14 _usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash However, after logging in, I didn't get any notification that my system had crashed and question about submitting. I then read here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker and changed under Privacy > Diagnostics, Send error reports to Canonical. This has no effect though, after logging out and then in again I get no question about submitting my crash. Now I entered this setting again and the option was unchecked! It seems that checking that option doesn't stick. Please advice, how should I handle/report my crashing Xorg/Unity.. High priority bug (IMHO) that needs to be fixed before Raring Release?
I upgraded to Raring the other day (from 12.04.2 LTS). Used Skype and noticed that all notification sounds sounds very distorted. Like a blown-out speaker. Googled it and found a solution in a askubuntu.com-question. http://askubuntu.com/questions/157891/skype-and-vlc-sounds-sizzle-distorted-bad And then on launchpad also, don't know about VLC because I haven't used it https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/751265 But, the main thing is, should users really have to do this, edit config files manually to get a common app as Skype to work? I have no clue what this tsched=0 does but it works for me.. Linux Mint lockscreen
Check out the lockscreen provided by Linux Mint (package cinnamon-screensaver). Looks really good, would be nice to have it in Ubuntu. Some notifications (keeping privacy in mind), current day/time would be great. I've tested this package from http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable but it's buggy, cannot resume from suspend sometimes because of it. Bug in some way but where? Where to file a bug?
Been using deja-dup for backups on my freshly installed Trusty Tahr installation. After every backup, it complains that it cannot backup ~/.cache/dconf and ~/.dbus. Adding these to Ignore (which takes folders as inputs) doesn't help. But, where is the problem? Is it in the filesystem, why are these folders owned by root? Or is it with deja-dup? I could not find any official documentation about it and only some askubuntu.com-questions with no good answers. $ sudo ls -la .cache/dconf total 12 drwx-- 2 root root 4096 mar 28 18:06 . drwx-- 24 thnov thnov 4096 apr 4 22:45 .. -rw--- 1 root root 2 mar 28 18:06 user $ sudo ls -la .dbus total 12 drwx-- 3 root root 4096 mar 28 18:06 . drwxr-xr-x 35 thnov thnov 4096 apr 4 22:47 .. drwx-- 2 root root 4096 mar 28 18:06 session-bus Rgds//Thomas -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Strange problems using laptop + ATI graphics adapter in Gutsy
Hello all I felt that Gutsy was working good on my workstation at home now so I decided to switch from Feisty also on my laptop (hp hc8430 + ati x1600). Big mistake :) I had very bad performance and saw very high CPU usage from the Xgl-process. This I reported as bug 146285[1]. I then discovered that I got the problem after disabling desktop effects. I tried to enable them and sure enough, the CPU usage got back to normal and the system felt fast again! Got some other graphic problems though which I eventually solved using my Feisty xorg.conf instead of the one Gutsy had generated. I think this will be something most users of the mobile ATI graphics card will see so it could be a big issue. Could other users with similar setup and non-tweaked xorg.conf's please respond to this to confirm if you experience the same problems or not? 1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xgl/+bug/146285 Rgds, Thomas Novin -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

I have been using Linux since 1995 but never on the desktop side. I've tried a couple of times but always reverted back to Windows. Last February I got a new laptop at work and then I decided to try Feisty Fawn which IIRC was a beta back then. I pretty soon also switched my home PC to Ubuntu from Windows XP. I can't see that I ever will be switching back to Windows again. Now with Gutsy I'm more pleased than ever. I've been using it for maybe two months now and I haven't really run into any serious trouble (except when I tried to install it on my laptop which has a mobile ATI graphics card). The fast-user-switch-applet works really great. I couldn't imagine it any better. Before it was a nuisance because we are two users on my home PC and having to enter your password twice every time we switched got very boring. Big thanks to everyone who helped in the creation of this great OS! Crashed with signal 5
Hello There seems to have been an enormous number of users having (including me) problems with programs crashing with signal 5 after upgrades in the last 24 hours. Every time my installation starts I get 4-5 crashes. If I try to start/use Pidgin, Evolution I get crashes. If I try to unlock some administrative tool I get a crash etc. Is this known? They must all be related (from a spectators view). To workaround this problem you can start a program from the terminal OK if you unset the variable G_DEBUG first. This search finds "a few": https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.searchtext=%22crashed+with +signal+5%22&orderby=-datecreated&search=Search&field.status% 3Alist=NEW&field.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSE&field.status% 3Alist=CONFIRMED&field.status%3Alist=TRIAGED&field.status% 3Alist=INPROGRESS&field.status% 3Alist=FIXCOMMITTED&field.assignee=&field.bug_reporter=&field.omit_dupes=on&field.has_patch=&field.has_no_package= I could have submitted +5 more than the 4 I have reported today but I don't see the point. This must be a absolute showstopper for Alpha 4? For the average user, the 685MB takes about 10-20 minutes to download. Not really a big deal. I think there are more than enough beta testers already so I don't think you should hold your breath waiting for such an image :) I think it's amazing that it's _only_ 685MB. Ps. I'm not a developer. Vinagre is confusing
Hello Today on Application > Internet I've got Remote Desktop Viewer and Terminal Server Client (on Hardy). As a user that knows he's is using Remote Desktop Protocol to connect to his Windows server, what do you think he will choose? I think the user will launch Remote Desktop Viewer/Vinagre and fail to connect to his RDP server. I think this should be renamed to avoid confusion. Why is this new VNC client added in the first place? Why not work with Terminal Server Client instead? Bad battery runtime in Ubuntu (on all laptops?)
Hello I couldn't find any discussion / bug about Ubuntus bad battery runtime so I added https://launchpad.net/bugs/195768. This is not mainly Ubuntus fault I think but there are definitely improvements that can be done. I've written two suggestions in the bug and I urge others for adding more. Please take this bug in consideration for Hardy+1, the Intrepid Ibex. Thanks for the attention!
