[Bug 376741] [NEW] Desktop won't render (noise) after installing ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center

2009-05-14 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

Dell Latitude D600 512MB
ATI Radeon 9000 32MB
Ubuntu 9.04 - GNOME

PROBLEM: Boots past Ubuntu splash screen (100% bar), flashes through 4
corrupt graphic screens, ending on one that displays something like the
Ubuntu splash screen (100% bar) in the upper half left and right
corners, something like the Ubuntu small icon logo repeated ~32 times
across the top like a bar, and the lower half of the screen multi
colored vertical line noise. [I believe the desktop is active, but
don't know how to navigate/confirm that]

STARTED: Used the main menu add/remove to add some KDE educational
packages and the ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center.

SO FAR: Tried recovery mode xfix, fsck, dpkg. [I'm very
willing/comfortable using the root console and moderately familier with
linux. I need pointers on what logs to find or configs to edit. Is
there a VGA mode for the desktop so I can uninstall the Catalyst
package?]

BACKGROUND: Reformatted to Ubuntu 9.04 and the graphics were a bit
slower, but running without glitches. Both versions had a habit of the
mouse buttons locking up for periods of time. This version started
taking to beep two or three times during shutdown.

[Bug 390534] [NEW] Firefox couldn't retrieve add-ons -- ADBLOCK PLUS

2009-06-21 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

UBUNTU 9.04 - GNOME
FIREFOX 3.0.11 (new profile, no other add-ons)
ADBLOCK PLUS 1.0.2

Using FIREFOX : TOOLS : ADD-ONS : SEARCH BOX : ADBLOCK PLUS ; the search
responds "Firefox couldn't retrieve add-ons". Searching on "ADBLOCK" yields
the same result, but searching on "BLOCK" provides results. I checked the bug
list and did not notice this issue.

By searching on BLOCK, I can install and have no problems. I can use
the BROWSE ALL ADD-ONS that takes me to addons.mozilla.org and have no
problems installing from there either.

This is only an issue because I am doing a special screen-recording for
a specific site and this prevents me from demonstrating the shortest
method.

[Bug 381628] [NEW] flash movies do not play in firefox

2009-05-29 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Dell Latitude D600
Ubuntu 9.04 - GNOME
Firefox 3.0.10
swfdec-mozilla 0.8.2-1ubuntu1
swfdec-gnome 2.26.0-1

Flash banners seem to work, but not flash movies (hulu.com). Did full
uninstall/reinstall of swfdec-mozilla and added swfdec-gnome. Ran
firefox in limited safe-mode, no change. Totem/gstreamer movie player
can not play swf files, although Nautilus shows file icon preview.

I am ready to provide logs, follow debug procedures and try beta
options.

DETAILS: Had to manually nuke version 3 out of /root/.azureus and

2009-09-13 Thread sirald66
Robert Hooker,

Can you direct me to a URL that explains what fglrx, mesa and such is -
so I understand what I'm installing/supporting?

How do I determine how and what to install to support ATI Radeon 9000
32MB?

It seems the recovery console xfix should have some Q&A that helps the
user install (if not the best graphic options) atleast functional
graphic options.

[In this whole process, its never been clear to me if I can reinstall
the OS from the Ubuntu 9.04 CD without nuking my personal files,
settings and installed applications.]

[Bug 376741] Re: Desktop won't render (garbled) - after installing ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center - Undefined symbol atiddxAbiDixLookupPrivate

2009-09-13 Thread sirald66
On Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 3:15 AM, Bryce Harrington
 wrote:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

I just got around to trying this, but it broke the graphics again.
Before trying it, I also downloaded the ppa-purge utility. When I ran
ppa-purge, my CLI did not have net access, so the purge was incomplete
and did not revert back to the old drivers.

- got CLI net access
- ran ppa-purge - no good
- ran package fix - updated some 100MB - no good
- ran xfix - no good
- ran apt-get remove fglrx-amdcccle - no good
- ran apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx - now works, with full screen effects
and low cpu

So I think somehow xorg-driver-fglrx was the root of the original problem when
I moved from Ubuntu 8 to 9.04

What suggestions do you have to assure I'm on the preferred drivers and
this xorg/fglrx mess is cleared up?

[Bug 376741] Re: Desktop won't render (garbled) - after installing ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center - Undefined symbol atiddxAbiDixLookupPrivate

2009-09-13 Thread sirald66
I really wanted to try Jouko's extensive advice above, but my concern is
that should it not work for me, I have a snowball's chance of figuring
out how to reverse it; that is why I went with Bryce Harrington's simple
suggestion first and got stuck for most of a week just on that.

Are there a few people who can 1) back up what Jouko has suggested and
2) explain how I would back out of those changes should they fail?

As it stands, I seem to have restored normal window acceleration and
effects just by nuking xorg-driver-fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle, so I am
unsure of what I would gain.

[Bug 495959] [NEW] gdm - freezing frequently after 2.6.28-17-generic update

2009-12-12 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

DELL LATITUDE D600
UBUNTU 9.04
LINUX 2.6.28-17-generic
GDM 2.20.10-0ubuntu2

EXPECTED: Normal operation when launching programs, windows, dialog
boxes, drop down-menus.

RESULT: Frequently when clicking a GDM menu, panel, taskbar - or
choosing an action that results in a taskbar/dialogbox item - the
screen, keyboard, mouse and soft-power reset buttons freeze [I atleast
once heard an mp3 continue playing]; this began immediately after the
2.6..28-17-generic update [which I believe included some video related
updates].

When trying to use ubuntu-bug, the report would generate, but
consistently froze upon 'send'. Freezing happens most frequently on
keyring related dialog boxs appearing from the taskbar, but not on the
desktop. GDM is my best guess as to the source. [FYI - to previously
uncorrupt my video and speed graphic performance, I had to uninstall
fglrx related packages; fglrx-modaliases is currently shown as
installed]

DIAGNOSTICS: Tried running kernal -17 in recovery mode; Tried running
previous kernal -16 in regular and recovery mode; Ran boot time memory
tests #0-9 over 3 passes.

NOTE: Reinstalling 9.04 is an option, but of course don't want to lose
my files and installed applications. Under Synaptic Manager, there is a
'save markings' feature, but it fails to save more than a zero byte
configuration file.

[Bug 495959] Re: gdm - freezing frequently after 2.6.28-17-generic update

2009-12-12 Thread sirald66
Pretty much anything that can/may create a new window frequently will
cause the freeze up. I've run into it when my bank site opens a
calendar window, and when Document Viewer (2.26.1) opens additional
documents.

[Bug 449272] Re: [compiz] applets with Dock type window leave shadow

2010-04-06 Thread sirald66
Jaunty (9.04) seemed to be fine, where Karmic (9.10) introduced the
problem.

Why is the solution in Lucid (10.04) and not applied to Karmic?

[For those with the touchpad mouse jump/lock problem, I'm told the
solution is also in Lucid. This development cycle is starting to remind
me of Microsoft -- where before the bugs are crushed, new features+bugs
are introduced; a never ending story.]

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2010-03-13 Thread sirald66
DELL LATITUDE D600
UBUNTU 9.10 with proposed-updates
LINUX 2.6.31-20-generic
NAUTILUS 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu3
GNOME 2.28.1
FireFox 3.5.8
FireGestures 1.5.6

When using UBUNTU_JAUNTY, I get the same problems as described above
(log below) -- but with UBUNTU_KARMIC the problem has evolved somewhat:

- previously it was common when the left-mouse button froze, for the
FireGestures plugin to activate its mouse-trail like an etch-a-sketch;
almost always had to reboot to get mouse back. this is rarely happening
now.

- when the mouse buttons lock up, i can now normally mouse up from my
app (browser) onto the Nautilus command bar (APPLICATIONS : PLACES :
SYSTEM) and repeatedly right-click until I get a drop-down menu; then I
can repeatedly left-click until I get a drop-down menu -- restoring
mouse button control. [normally in this process, i can not use the
mouse pad vertical scroll feature until left-click is restored]

- the mouse randomly jumping around the screen seems a bit more frequent
than UNBUNTU_JAUNTY installs.

*NEW* Right-click for a drop-down menu leaving the mouse perfectly
still, the left-click (double-tap) will not be recognized until you
atleast slightly move the mouse.

*NEW* Right-click for a drop-down menu and slight/slow movement of
mouse activates first menu item as if you just left-clicked it. This
happens MOST of the time and often winds up launching the item, or
creating a new document/action. [a trashbin full of new empty folders
i've had to delete daily based on this]

*FYI* I have not tried any of the patches mentioned.

2010-02-07 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

DELL LATITUDE D600
ATI RADEON 9000
UBUNTU 9.10 with proposed-updates

EXPECTED: Change screen effects with Simple Compiz Settings manager
from Glide 2 to Glide 3.

ACTUAL: Changed to Glide 3. Now when opening any new window,
desktop/keyboard freezes; minimizing the initial keyring dialog box for
wifi seems ok, but deny/accept choice results in freeze. System
pooched.

DIAG: Prevents me from running command window, debug apts, reporting.

What text file must I edit/delete to restore default Compiz function?

** Affects: compizconfig-settings-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 479330] Re: CHARACTER MAP - View By Unicode Block, not alphabetically sorting

2010-02-07 Thread sirald66
STILL A PROBLEM

Trying to figure out where to find some of the example characters below
with the current interface is a real bear. A custom hotkey tool to
retrieve the top 10 or 20 characters would be very useful.

Trying to figure out where to find some of the example characters with
the current interface is extremely time consuming.

[Bug 462304] Re: Touchpad/mouse jumps, buttons freeze

2010-02-07 Thread sirald66
NO RESPONSE - REINSTALLED TO 9.10

Happens less now, and normally can be resolved by right-clicking the
GNOME command bar a couple times to get a context menu, then left-click.

One symptom now (and then) is that the vertical scroll bar will lock to
(move with) the cursor, going up and down until I can release it with
the hack above.

[Bug 461418] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV after connecting USB hard drive

2010-02-14 Thread sirald66
Moving ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata to *_OLD worked.

Following is problem I was having:

Ubuntu 9.10
Linux 2.6.31-20-generic
Gnome 2.28.1
Compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu2.1
Nautilus 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu3

EXPECTED: Launch of File Manager (trash can, and desktop).

ACTUAL: File Manager shows wait pointer for awhile, but then
disappears; trash can shows 'maximize' framing animation, but no
content; desktop not showing files stored in Desktop directory.

DIAG: This began when I used Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager to
change open window animation from Glide 2 to Glide 3 which froze desktop
basically when any window was opened [resolved by setting appearance
visual effects to None].

To address this problem, renamed following files to _OLD extension and
restarting. Didn't make any apparent change.

  ~/.cache/compizconfig
  ~/.compiz
  ~/.config/compiz
  ~/.gconf/apps/compiz
  ~/.gconf/apps/compizconfig

When I try to launch the File Manager or my Recycle Bin - the kern.log, syslog,
and messages log update with these lines:

Feb 13 00:24:53 TOBY kernel: [10417.224943] nautilus[8957]: segfault at
b6e47fdc ip 06bf5760 sp b6e47fe0 error 6 in libgvfsdbus.so[6bd9000+24000]

b6ef6fdc ip 00f16760 sp b6ef6fe0 error 6 in libgvfsdbus.so[efa000+24000]

I am assuming one suggestion may be to reinstall libgvfsdbus.so and anything
that says Nautilus. That sounds rather core and dangerous.

[Someone did suggest I reinstall all Nautilus and then Dbus if needed.
But before I did that, I deleted ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata as
suggested here and it works]

[Bug 480596] Re: Incompatible extension 'Google Gears' in Firefox 3.5

2010-03-21 Thread sirald66
UBUNTU 9.10 WPU
FIREFOX 3.5.8
http://dl.google.com/gears/current/gears-linux-opt.xpi

Attempting to use Google Latitude with Google Gears to track by WiFi,
the XPI download says: "Google Gears" could not be installed because it
is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please
contact the author of this item about the problem.

Read the bug thread and see that Google Code has a hacked Gears package.
But since Google is dropping Gears development for HTML5, Ubuntu should
adjust the repository or flush Gears.

This is a limbo legacy bug.

[Bug 462304] [NEW] Touchpad/mouse jumps, buttons freeze

2009-10-27 Thread sirald66
Public bug reported:

PROBLEM: When I use various single applications, the mouse (touchpad) on
occasion jumps to a seemingly random location on the screen; usually happens
only if I am moving the mouse. But the killer is that sometimes the one of the
mouse buttons stop responding -- requiring me to reboot the system at least a
few times each day; sometimes it affects Gnome and/or an application (ie can
use scroll bar, but not Browser: File/Edit/View etc; or can't click Gnome:
Applications/Places/System).

[Bug 635310] Re: Gnome-Applets (Invest) - ^DJI symbol stopped showing

2010-09-16 Thread sirald66
Interesting observation, John.

I had added the INDU symbol without removing the ^DJI symbol, so had not
noticed. So I tried this:

Add symbol ^DJI with label DOW-1, and add symbol INDU with label DOW-2.
My popup shows DOW-1, but only if INDU is present; the applet gives a
'No stock quotes available' dialog error if ^DJI is not present.

Somehow INDU is only qualified if ^DJI is present, and then ^DJI
displays -- not INDU.  {weird}

As of a few days ago, the solution (including symbols ^DJI and INDU) has
stopped working. It is a bit over a year since this happened last time,
so I suspect Yahoo Finance once again has closed the feed. [not like
the Dow Industrial Average isn't important]

Ubuntu needs to select a better stock ticker applet.

[Bug 807860] Re: "Error: Protocol incompatible. Please upgrade libpiano."

2011-07-29 Thread sirald66
UBUNTU 9.10 +proposed
PITHOS 0.3.9

Using instructions at http://kevinmehall.net/p/pithos/ - I tried to reinstall
per bug #814672, but get the same console error:

ERROR:root:fault: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException:
000.000.000.000|0|INCOMPATIBLE_VERSION|Pandora does not support your
client version.

Nothing in this bug's description makes clear how to install/test a beta
version.

The author needs to update the home page to this issue.
