Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

DELL LATITUDE D600
UBUNTU 9.04
LINUX 2.6.28-17-generic
GDM 2.20.10-0ubuntu2

EXPECTED: Normal operation when launching programs, windows, dialog
boxes, drop down-menus.

RESULT: Frequently when clicking a GDM menu, panel, taskbar - or
choosing an action that results in a taskbar/dialogbox item - the
screen, keyboard, mouse and soft-power reset buttons freeze [I atleast
once heard an mp3 continue playing]; this began immediately after the
2.6..28-17-generic update [which I believe included some video related
updates].

When trying to use ubuntu-bug, the report would generate, but
consistently froze upon 'send'. Freezing happens most frequently on
keyring related dialog boxs appearing from the taskbar, but not on the
desktop. GDM is my best guess as to the source. [FYI - to previously
uncorrupt my video and speed graphic performance, I had to uninstall
fglrx related packages; fglrx-modaliases is currently shown as
installed]

DIAGNOSTICS: Tried running kernal -17 in recovery mode; Tried running
previous kernal -16 in regular and recovery mode; Ran boot time memory
tests #0-9 over 3 passes.

NOTE: Reinstalling 9.04 is an option, but of course don't want to lose
my files and installed applications. Under Synaptic Manager, there is a
'save markings' feature, but it fails to save more than a zero byte
configuration file.
