[Bug 364699] Re: IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb)
Hi, I yesterday debugged this driver. While I cannot fix the actual buffer overrun, I can do the best possible to recover from it. The Igor USB device internally provides a circular buffer of a limited length. In case the buffer overrun happens, the driver would only report back to lirc_dev the data that was not yet overwritten - but not the data that overwrote older data. Fixing this (and adding some sanity checks to make sure not to cause illegal reads) causes as much of the received data to be sent to lirc as had been received in the ring buffer. This is enough to make my Onkyo remote work (though mode2 and my old serial lirc keycodes proved helpful configuring the remote), as the relevant bits are at the end of the sequence. ** Attachment added: "Fix buffer overrun issues." http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27549998/LP364699-fix-buffer-overrun ** Summary changed: - IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb) + [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb) ** Tags added: patch -- [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/364699 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 345076] Re: Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption
Here you can see my corruptions. I'm using nvidia (180.53 with this shot, now at 185.something). note: * the window list has almost disappeared, from 3-4 windows only one icon of konsole is left * several icons have disappeared from kicker (K icon, show desktop icon) and from the tray (kde4lirc) * trash icon disappeared * temp display corrupted * amarok 1.4 icon _not_ corrupted * not visible: browser hightlighted icon corrupted * not visible: kde3lirc icon also was never corrupted Using KDE 4.2 with qt 4.5.0, the corruption happened preditably every few hours. With KDE 4.3b1 and 4.3b2 using qt 4.5.1, it only happens every 8-9 hours. The previous nvidia driver update changed occasional hard freezes that often went away after a few minutes by very rare total freezes, but did nothing on the corruption front. So while some intel driver corruptions that were mentioned in the comments have been fixed by intel driver updates, the one reported in this bug still occur. ** Attachment added: "nvidia+kde4.3b2 screenshot" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27836416/kde.png -- Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345076 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kde4libs in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 345076] Re: Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption
> Your screenshot looks nothing like the first few reported against ati, > reclosing. Different corruptoin, different bug. What again are you smoking? You see _EXACTLY_ the same corruption as from StephenKing in comment #12. Note in particular how the only remaining icon in the left screenshot is from Opera, which is also qt3. And notice how in the right screen shot there's _NOTHING_ left, _EXACTLY_ like in the screenshot from the original report. Also when comparing with the original, see that my temp and cpu displays have been corrupted (as seen also in StephenKing's screen shot and as mentioned in the original report). You also see the big "Desktop Folder" widget not existing in the middle. I also have a composite-on-off switch, that also disappears. So you see it is EXACTLY the same kind of corruption, why are you then closing it? And yes, I could have waited somewhat longer until the remaining stuff has disappeared as well... -> Reopen. Please do not close until something has been actually fixed. And remember that the original reporter also still has this problem, so even if the bug would be in several drivers at the same time, it still would not be closed. ** Changed in: kde4libs (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Confirmed -- Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345076 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 345076] Re: Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption
Can you please re-read my notes regarding my screen shot and compare it to the original report? I already spelled it out in my last comment. It is obvious this is not a driver issue, at least not only, because both ATI and nvidia are affected in the same way. Two more reasons: a) whenever I move the mouse coursor over anything that has disappeared, I get this on stdout: QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 3 QPainter::setCompositionMode: Painter not active QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted b) the (classic) K menu stops working, first there are no sub-menus, later it doesn't show up at all anymore. If you STILL don't believe me that my corruptions are the same as those of the original reporter, then maybe the original reporter could create a screenshot with all of those elements on it that more or less survived corruption for me, that is: a digital clock; a minimized konsole window; the device notifier applet; program icons; the KDE 4.3B weather applet; the logoff/shutdown KDE 4.3B applet; kmix in the system tray. On the desktop another weather applet; a file monitor; cpu / temp monitor. Then we can compare better. ** Changed in: kde4libs (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Confirmed -- Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345076 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So much about "Beta2 would have any of the fixes that 4.2.4 would have." kdebindings and konqueror-plugins are definately simply missing in b1 and b2. [Bug 345076] Re: Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption
The packages in question that improved the situation are python-kde4 and kde-workspace (for python-plasma), so add those and mark bug invalid everywhere else. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm the bug to be completely fixed with this. After 11h uptime (3h40min since last plasma crash), I get disappearing texts in the window list widget and elsewhere. In between I had the effect that clicking on a python plasma widget (essentially the hello world + hal event listener + auto mount) had the immediate effect of all visible text disappearing. Clicking on the syslog or messages text file monitor let it re-appear. I could reproduce it not everytime, but a few times these clicks had the mentioned effect. Now I'm back to the previous level of corruption. Maybe Jonathan Thomas could do something useful for a change and provide some insight into how these things could be debugged? -- Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 panel corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345076 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I don't think you have to blame _me_ here for not accepting that guys misbehaviour. > Then you make a remark like that?!? Check what that guy contributed to the bug fixing. He checked which driver you were using and then just kept insisting on the dogmactic view that "corruption occured => must be driver issue". I do not see any constructive action to get the bug fixed. Not in any way. > I need this bug fixed According your comment #35 the bug was fixed for you. I moved the bug to the only components that were different between 4.3b2 and 4.2.4. I also presented further evidence that make it likely to be related to those components. Do you think that was wrong? Do you think you would get the bug fixed if the only thing being done is shifting the blame to some driver that, according to presented evidence, is not at fault here? > File a different bug, What purpose would it have to file a different bug that's obviously a duplicate? > to as the dev implies that your issue is not the same as the OP That guy implies (in fact, dogmatically claims) a lot. Contrary to all evidence. Just don't let reality get into way of your opinion. Feel free to check the evidence provided and feel free to argue to the contrary. If you actually want to get this bug fixed, then get someone to figure out why the "QPainter" could become "not active". See your comment #3. This seems to be the core issue here. And that needs to debugged in KDE4 land, not in any video driver. If you want to do something on your own, deinstall KDE4 python bindings and check whether this fixes the corruptions or not. If it does not, then those where the wrong packages to blame. I'd say it would be quite appropriate if you would acknowledge that your insistance on shifting the blame to the drivers was wrong and that the reported corruptions were, in fact, the same. Additionally, it would be very helpful for the project if you would step down the high horse here. It shouldn't matter whether I am a kubuntu developer (which I never claimed to be), a debian developer, a kde developer, a developer (which I am) or a user. You went to a great length to explain why I'd be stupid, and even stooped to claim I couldn't be a developer just because I might not know every detail of KDE programming intrinsacies. I can confirm this bug, also using nvidia proprietary drivers. > [...nothing related to the bug...] I know how to configure colors, thank you. If you'd have actually used the specified KDE version on Dapper, you#d have seen the bug. It was ok in KDE 3.5.3, broken in 3.5.4-0ubuntu1~dapper and fixed again in KDE 3.5.5. It also works in KDE 3.5.5 from edgy, which I'm using now. [Bug 364699] Re: [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb)
Hi guys, can we please re-close the bug? There's nothing anymore on the software side that can be fixed. The Igorplug has a ring buffer of limited length. If your remote control sends sequences that are longer than that (e.g. like my Onkyo RC 242S), then the buffer overrun is bound to happen each time the remote sends a button press. My proposed patch thus removed the error message (because it doesn't provide any further help), but the author of lirc decided to leave it in. My proposed patch also removed the message if the device said "dude actually on second thought I don't have data for you" (the "GET_INFRACODE: error 0" message). The author accepted that on second try (that's what's in r1.35). So the original fix for this bug only made sure as much information as available would be returned, just as in the w32 driver (it previously returned only the part that was neither overwritten nor overwrote something, the part that overwrote something was missing). tl;dr: the driver is as good as it gets except for useless messages. If the recording tool doesn't work for you, then you still can use mode2 to get the pattern for each key press and then manually derive an lircd.conf file from it. -- [PATCH] IR doesn`t work (lirc_igorplugusb) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/364699 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 228429] Re: wishlist: handling of duplicate files
> Would you be willing to create a bug report stating which packages are conflicting? It's a fairly uncommon bug ... LOL. As a matter of fact, conflicting files happen quite frequently during dist upgrades, in particular since preceding year's KDE packages' quality essentially required the use of PPAs. Anyway, if conflicting files happen, dpkg should add the package to a list of conflict packages, if the package(s) it conflicts with is(are) also to be updated, and retry them later. Or, in a simpler way, put the package to a list of conflict packages, then if any package has been successfully installed, restart unpacking with this list of packages. This would solve most of the conflicts happening during dist upgrade, because conflicts within the dist are indeed uncommon. Also impending the stableness of dpkg is the fact that any kind of upgrade through dselect can result in a broken state that cannot be resolved within dselect, sometimes not even within apt-get. Example: upgrading amarok1 to amarok2 from karmic, required some libqtscript4-* packages, which failed due to conflicts to libqtscriptbindings1=0.1.0-0ubuntu1~jaunty1. With libqtscript4-* failed, broken dependancies do not allow to remove libqtscriptbindings1; directly calling dpkg -r and then apt-get install -f is necessary to remedy the situation. Maybe dpkg should automatically store a conflicts between packages when they end up trying to overwrite each other's files. Then at least an apt-get install -f would pick up those and know to remove libqtscriptbindings1 by itself. If then apt-get automatically does a -f, then a lot of robustness has been achieved that is currently missing. -- wishlist: handling of duplicate files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211178] Re: dpkg should install other packages in the background while promting for user input
In fact, dpkg should operate more event driven in general. Example: for upgrading from jaunty to karmic, I needed to download around 2GB of files, with like 500MB additional space required after installation, with around 2GB free. That would be a solvable problem per se, but dpkg first downloads almost more files it can actually store (maybe it should at least limit it to half the available space or some such). Downloading takes hours. Only after everything is downloaded, it actually starts installing, every once in a while waiting for user input. Instead, it should order the packages (per server) according to dependancies and start installing once it has downloaded a non-trivial cluster of packages that can be installed together without breaking dependancies. That it doesn't need (further) user input for. Yes, that would be quite a non-trivial change... -- dpkg should install other packages in the background while promting for user input https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 301174] Re: Use proper sound event instead of system beep
@michael perigard: thanks for your insightful comments - blacklisting pcspr pretty much obfuscates the issue. However, neither metacity nor compiz are the issue. Using KDE, I'm using neither of those; but Firefox keeps beeping (not that I have an issue with the beeping itself - but it should honor GNOME settings). The beep is caused by using XkbBell() (you can trigger that by simply calling xkbbell binary). GTK uses this from gdk_display_beep() and gdb_window_beep(). GNOME uses that from who knows where. So this is entirely a GTK/GNOME issue. Run a debugger on the program that keeps beeping, set a breakpoint on XkbBell(), and run. When the breakpoint is hit, the backtrace tells you what precisely needs to be fixed. -- Use proper sound event instead of system beep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301174 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1512640] [NEW] UX32VD: Touchpad does not turn off when using keyboard fn-key combination, although indicator is shown
Public bug reported: After upgrading from Ubuntu 15.04 to ubuntu 15.10, I have noticed that using the laptop hotkey (I am using an Asus UX32VD ultrabook, and the hotkey combination is fn-F9) to turn off the touchpad does not work. The indicator, a touchpad image with an X in the corner, does show up, and the indicator cycles correctly. However, this does not actually turn off the touchpad. However, going into the Gnome settings ("Mouse & and Touchpad") and clicking the Touchpad to off does actually turn off the touchpad. [Bug 1514357] [NEW] Opening new windows or menus (e.g. "File") in programs, switching workspaces becomes slower and slower over time in Gnome
Public bug reported: During normal use, opening new windows, opening dropdown menus (e.g. "File", "View" in any program) becomes increasingly slow in Gnome. [Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces
Yesterday I used Unity in 12.04 a whole working day (about 8 hours) without getting the freeze on desktop switches or "exposé"-switches. However, since I switched from XFCE, I think the desktop was still managed by XFCE, since there was no desktop background on my Unity desktop. My feeling is that that shouldn't matter for whether or not the present bug happens. Compiz was managing the desktop, and all the usual functions worked. The transitions between workspaces were always snappy, and as said, I got no freezes or crashes. My computer is still a bit too weak to really handle Unity though, so I'm back with XFCE from now on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/815996 Title: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/815996/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 815996] Re: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces
I have switched to XFCE to get rid of the crashes that I experienced in both Unity and Gnome 3, and the freeze in Unity. However, I logged in to unity just now, and tried to switch workspaces several times. No freeze, and much snappier than before. However, I think my test was too short to actually be sure that the bug has been fixed. It usually was possible to work for at least an hour before the freeze happened. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/815996 Title: Desktop occasionally freezes/locks up when switching workspaces To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-plugins-main/+bug/815996/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work
Hi, I have now gone back and tested kernels back to 2.6.32, the kernel that was used in Ubuntu when this laptop was released. It seems I remembered incorrectly, backlight control has never worked properly on this laptop. Backlight control did not work on any of the kernels I tested. I tested the following kernels: - 2.6.32-69-generic - 2.6.38-02063808-generic - 3.0.1-030001-generic - 3.11.0-12-generic - 3.11.0-26-generic - 3.13.0-32-generic - 3.13.0-34-generic - 3.13.0-37-generic - 3.13.0-37-generic - 3.18.0-031800rc4-generic It is possible that the problem is the same as for the UL-80VT: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66501 ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #66501 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66501 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1392016 Title: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work
I have now tested the very latest kernel, version 3.19 rc 1 (from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc1-vivid/), and backlight control still does not work. The indicator does pop up and indicates increase and decrease in the correct way, but the actual backlight level on the laptop screen does not change. Furthermore, the function key to turn off the touchpad does not work, and doesn't even show an indicator bubble. ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.18-rc4 ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.19-rc1 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1392016 Title: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work
Hi Christopher, thanks for your continued help. The command "echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" does set the brightness to a very low value (basically completely black). This was done with the "acpi_backlight=vendor" kernel parameter in use. Rebooting "with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0" does not change anything (indicator bubble pops up, backlight level doesn't actually change). Rebooting "with just kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=1" does not change anything (indicator bubble pops up, backlight level doesn't actually change). This did work: "Creating a new file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/80-backlight.conf and pasting into it the following code: Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "sna" Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight" # use your backlight that works here BusID "PCI:0:2:0" EndSection " The backlight control now works properly (indicator bubble and proper backlight change). Furthermore, it is now possible to turn off the touchpad by using the function key (the indicator bubble does show up). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1392016 Title: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1392016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
