I can do: * log in to KDE * click away any annoying KDE popup * open a konsole * run: ibus-daemon -x -r -d -p /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-ui-kde * press ctrl-space and it either works, or the konsole hangs; in the latter case, close the konsole and open a new one

Very unreliable, this.
