[Bug 364237] [NEW] radeonhd fails to detect dual monitor with RV635
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd The radeonhd driver for my graphic card (VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 9596, Subsystem: Hightech Information System Ltd. Device 0028, which I think has chipset RV635) seems unable to detect my dual monitor setup. This problem was present with Intrepid and is still present with the new radeonhd 1.2.4 driver on Jaunty, so I decided to file a bug report. I am not sure this is the best place to report it though. Long story short, with the radeon driver everything seems to be fine, but the radeonhd driver seems to believe that only one monitor is connected. I am attaching the Xorg.0.log files and the output for 'xrandr -q' for both configurations, that is, with radeon and with radeonhd. I hope this should be enough to pin down the problem, but feel free to ask me for more information. On a side note, the fglrx driver freezes the X server, so I uninstalled it on my system.. The version of the X server I am using is 1.6.0 but I guess all of this is irrelevant since same problem happened equally with Intrepid and Jaunty. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- radeonhd fails to detect dual monitor with RV635 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/364237 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 368187] [NEW] garbage screen with ati driver and Radeon HD 3650 on Jaunty
Public bug reported: I am not sure if my problem has already been reported or not, but it is pretty nasty, so I am reporting it. Basically, the radeon driver completely hangs my computer when the X server starts. The mouse seems working but the keyboard is completely irresponsive and the screen shows garbage as if the memory had not been initialized and still contains pieces from previous sessions. Connecting through ssh works though, so I can tell that kde 4.2 started fine and everything works ok. There is no sign of errors in the Xorg.0.log file. This happens as well with the installer cd for Jaunty. I am using a fresh installation of Jaunty, and according to lspci, my graphic card identifier is VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV635 PRO AGP [Radeon HD 3650] There are a lot of forums describing different problems, and it took me a long time and tries to find a workaround. What worked was to disable DRI adding the line Option "DRI" "off" to the Device section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I am still confused about it though. I could not find any meaningful log in dmesg or in Xorg.0.log and the system does not seem to notice something is wrong while being basically completely locked. This problem was not present with the Intrepid version of Ubuntu. I also needed desperately to get the radeon driver to work since both radeonhd and fglrx do not support my dual monitor setup. Bottom line, Jaunty does not work on my machine without very specific tweaking. I wish I could help more. Does this feel like an Xorg bug or a kernel bug? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- garbage screen with ati driver and Radeon HD 3650 on Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 286014] Re: kde print ignores duplex & copy options
I don't know what to think. I am using KDE 4.3.0 which I assume is based on QT 4.5 but the printing problem is still the same. When I try to print, the printer refuses to print because it was told to print on A4 even if US Letter is selected in the printing dialog. I understand that this is not a KDE issue, but if important bugs like this fail at getting fixed in a one year span, I start to be suspicious about the whole set of libraries KDE is based on. [Bug 51991] Re: Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. Can be killed by remote terminal.
I would like to say that I have the same problem since I upgraded to Gutsy from Feisty a couple of days ago. Freeze-ups are very irregular and only the mouse is working after. Can't access the console with Ctrl+Alt+F1. I can log remotely from another machine. Xorg is taking 100% of the CPU but since the machine is dual processor it is still pretty responsive. I don't have superkaramba running so that fix doesn't apply to me. I am using the ati driver and the graphic card is a "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]". Also, I try to kill Xorg with "killall -9 Xorg" but this doesn't seem to help. Xorg is still there running. I wonder if mine could be a different bug. [Bug 51991] Re: Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. Can be killed by remote terminal.
The administrator of the machine that was freezing-up suggested me that it could be that the graphic card of the machine was flawed. [Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage
I have had this problem for many years now. I am glad to see that other people are complaining about it. Let me add that at first I have tried to buy more RAM and disable swap, as it seemed that hard drive usage was what killed the machine. Nevertheless, as soon as I do something wrong in matlab, the system freezed really bad. Given a few seconds/minutes/hours, matlab eventually get killed automatically but the loss in productivity is tremendous. I have never understood what is going on, as I have no swap. Also, if large chunks of memory get requested, matlab issues an out of memory statement, but what seems to freeze the machine are little subsequent request of small amounts of memory. Something in the kernel is plain wrong to allow a process to eat up all of the resources. In my personal opinion, you will always regret eventually to have chosen to save money on RAM relying on swap, because of misuses like this. But I hate that something is still crossing my choice of not having swap somehow. I would pay to know exactly what is going on. Public bug reported: Since the upgrade from linux-image-4.15.0-32-generic to linux- image-4.15.0-33-generic my Dell XPS 13 L322X laptop is unable to connect to my home WiFi network. [Bug 1787374] [NEW] resolvconf fails to update DNS server after resuming laptop from suspend
Public bug reported: This bug has been present since I have updated to Ubuntu 17.10 and it is still present in Ubuntu 18.04. The solution is for me to edit /run/resolvconf/interface/systemd-resolved and remove the work DNS server: nameserver 127.0.0.53 search plc.hootoo.com And then update /etc/resolv.conf with the following command: $ sudo /etc/init.d/resolvconf restart Alternatively, another solution is to reboot the laptop. Maybe mine is a completely different problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1677198 Title: OpenVPN not Working in 17.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager/+bug/1677198/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1685292] [NEW] Zesty: network-manager-applet VPN 17.04 Cisco AnyConnect fails with Duo Authentication
Public bug reported: Since I have updated to Ubuntu Zesty 17.04 I have had problems with connecting through VPN. I did not understand at first what was causing the issue. Now I think I have figured it out and explaining the issue might help other people with the same problem understanding what is going on. I login to my work VPN network using Cisco AnyConnect (available through package openconnect) and Duo Authentication. Because of Duo Authentication, there are always two passwords to fill in, one is my regular password and the other one is a 6 numeric password generated every few seconds that I need to ascertain from my smartphone. If I click on the option dialogue box "Save passwords", I think the applet manager will save both passwords and the next time I try to connect through VPN it will use both passwords (one of which will be expired) multiple times until my work account will be locked out. By the time the dialogue appears allowing me to include the correct passwords, it seems to be already too late. The login will fail no matter what because now I have been locked out and I could understand what was going on because there was no way for me to know that at that point I had been irrevocably locked out of the ability to VPN. I do not know if this is a network-manager issue, a network-manager- applet issue, or an openconnect issue, but this is definitely a completely new annoying behaviour resulting from the update to Ubuntu Zesty 17.04. Also, of notice buy maybe unrelated, if I select in the network-manager- applet "VPN Connections", the option "Configure VPN..." is greyed out and cannot be selected anymore. This is also a new behaviour of Ubuntu Zesty 17.04. ** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1685292 Title: Zesty: network-manager-applet VPN 17.04 Cisco AnyConnect fails with Duo Authentication To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/1685292/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1697027] [NEW] ath9k freezes suspend resume Ubuntu 17.04
Public bug reported: Description: Ubuntu Zesty Zapus Release: 17.04 What was expected to happen? I expected the laptop would suspend and resume without issues What happened instead? First the network fails, then all other programs slowly start to fail as well until the system freezes completely. The system is unable to shutdown and it requires a forced shutdown. Often when suspending my system, a recent upgrade to 17.04 from 16.10, after resuming the network does not work and then slowly the whole system freezes. Looking at dmesg, the problem seems to arise just before the system suspends with the kernel trace attached below. My best guess is that the issue is caused by ath9k. My system is a Dell XPS13 version 9333 (2013) running kernel 4.10.0-22-generic (with 8GB of RAM and no swap) and it is often connected to a Dell U3011 monitor. I could not find other reports of this bug and this behaviour is new to 17.04, that is, it was not present in 16.10. I was always able to suspend and resume without issues before. I have been waiting to see bug 1674838 fixed before reporting this bug thinking that they might be related, but they are clearly independent as I am still having this suspend issue. Happy to try to collect more info if this information is not enough to understand where the problem lies, however it is impossible to run apport once the bug arises. [Bug 1697027] Re: ath9k freezes suspend resume Ubuntu 17.04
I can confirm that the same issue occurs with kernel 4.12.0-041200rc4-generic and that the issue did not exist with Ubuntu 16.10. I do not know which kernel introduced the issue but immediately after upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04 I started observing the machine occasionally freezing upon resuming from suspend. I have just installed kernel version 4.12.0-041200rc4-generic and reproduced the bug. To reproduce the bug I usually need to suspend the system about five times. Most of the times suspend/resume does work just fine, and then occasionally it leaves the system in an unrecoverable state. Not sure if a specific state triggers the issue. It seems random to me. I have attached the dmesg output I obtained with kernel 4.12.0-041200rc4-generic. The issue seems to be exactly the same as with kernel 4.10.0-22-generic. Once the bug arises, I cannot file the report with apport as the machine is unable to use the network: $ apport-collect 1697027 ERROR: connecting to Launchpad failed: Unable to find the server at launchpad.net You can reset the credentials by removing the file /home/genovese/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials Is there a way to collect the data with apport into a file and upload it later after rebooting the machine? ** Attachment added: "dmesg.4.12.0-041200rc4-generic" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1697027/+attachment/4893177/+files/dmesg.4.12.0-041200rc4-generic ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697027 Title: ath9k freezes suspend resume Ubuntu 17.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1697027/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
I have had the same problem. My guess is that, since I have two hard drives, the system is trying to start from the wrong drive where an old version of GRUB is installed. My solution was to start Ubuntu with a USB stick (it does not matter which version). Once you start, these commands will do it: # mkdir /tmp/drive # sudo mount /dev/sdX1 /tmp/drive # sudo mount --bind /dev /tmp/drive/dev # sudo mount --bind /proc /tmp/drive/proc # sudo mount --bind /sys /tmp/drive/sys # sudo chroot /tmp/drive # dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc Where sdX1 must be the drive where your system is installed. When you run the last command you should select the sdX drive, though I guess running it multiple times will install the new version of grub on each drive and give you some piece of mind. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1289977 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1289977/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
I think Lastique got a good explanation. How many people with this bug have actually two hard drives on their computer? I certainly did. For those trying to follow instructions on #27, make sure you install grub on each of your hard drives (i.e., both sda and sdb) by running "dpkg- reconfigure grub-pc" multiple times. My suggestion for the ubuntu team is to start telling users to create a bootable CD/USB before performing any distribution upgrade. [Bug 1314213] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X220] External DP1 monitor extremely unstable since upgrade to 14.04
I have some new information. Apparently, I tried a different external monitor with the displayport and the same 2560x1600 resolution and the laptop worked just fine. Because of that, I manually add the resolution each time the computer boots with the following command: xrandr --newmode 2560x1600 268.00 2560 2608 2640 2720 1600 1603 1609 1646 -hsync +vsync; xrandr --addmode DP1 2560x1600; xrandr --newmode 1280x800 71.00 1280 1328 1360 1440 800 803 809 823 -hsync +vsync; xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x800 And then I set the output to the monitor with the following command: xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --off --output HDMI1 --off --output DP1 --mode 2560x1600 Therefore it is likely that this is a bug related to the display port->dvi adapter. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1314213 Title: [Lenovo ThinkPad X220] External DP1 monitor extremely unstable since upgrade to 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1314213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1314213] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X220] External DP1 monitor extremely unstable since upgrade to 14.04
I guess it is way to late for me to figure that out now. However, you might try to run your computer from a USB pen, installing Ubuntu 14.04 with unetbootin and then see what behavior you get. That is what I did and made me realize that the problem likely relied in some settings. Maybe try removing the .compiz directory? If you figure out which one it is, let me know. Also, the behavior I have now is slightly different from the behavior I had with Ubuntu 13.10. Before I would add the resolution with xrandr and then change display again with xrandr. Now, instead, as soon as I add the resolution with xrandr the display changes automatically. I believe that Unity 14.04 responds automatically to some changes, while Unity 13.10 did not, and for some reasons this was leading to the crashes before. I have also noticed that my laptop used to run some dbus program after boot that would make the hard drive spin for several minutes before coming to a rest. Since I deleted all my configuration files, that is not happening anymore. Overall, the update from 13.10 to 14.04 was the worst Ubuntu update I have ever experienced (I also had experienced this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/449680/upgrading- from-13-10-to-14-04-broke-grub).

[Bug 1437091] [NEW] xrandr --delmode unable to remove incorrectly detected video resolution modes
Public bug reported: I own an HP LP3065 monitor (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KB6E3G/) with a BizLink displayport adapter (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XYBA72/). The command "sudo get-edid -b 6 | parse-edid" correctly identifies the available resolutions of the screen as 2560x1600 and 1280x800. However, the Ubuntu system incorrectly identifies instead the resolutions 1024x768, 800x600, 848x480, and 640x480 which all don't work with the monitor. While I have to add manually the correct resolutions with xrandr using the command "xrandr --newmode 2560x1600 268.00 2560 2608 2640 2720 1600 1603 1609 1646 -hsync +vsync && xrandr --addmode DP1 2560x1600", I occasionally have the system attempting to use the 1024x768 resolution leading to an empty black screen. One potential solution would be to remove the rogue resolutions so that they could not be automatically chosen. I tried the command "xrandr --delmode DP1 1024x768" but this is to no avail with the following output: X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (RRDeleteOutputMode) Serial number of failed request: 42 Current serial number in output stream: 43 My understanding is that the system thinks to know better than the user and disallows from removing native resolutions. However, it is clear that the system is not designed well enough to know what the correct native resolutions are. This is tremendously frustrating and ultimately it is combination of a bug in properly detecting the native resolutions (gone unfixed for the last five years) and a flawed design assuming detected resolutions would never need to be removed. I am at a loss with regard who to and where to file this bug. [Bug 1314213] [NEW] External DP1 monitor extremely unstable since upgrade to 14.04
Public bug reported: Since upgrade to 14.04, the external display on DP1 is extremely unstable. I get constant "[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up" messages over dmesg. I used to get those with 13.10, but there was no stability issue. Once the laptop (Lenovo X220) is connected to the monitor (resolution is 2560x1600), if I run any program like xrandr or unity-control-center, the system immediately reverts from the external display to the laptop display, and often crashes becoming unresponsive. Every time I run xrandr or unity-control-center, it triggers 20 "[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up" messages in dmesg and if I am using the external monitor it further triggers a reproducible crash. It is possible that this might be related to the DVI->DP adapter I am using. Due to an unresolved bug, the correct EDID for the monitor is not recognized, and I have to manually add that after each boot. [Bug 1314213] Re: External DP1 monitor extremely unstable since upgrade to 14.04
I have tried to install linux-image-3.15.0-031500rc3-generic following this guide: http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-kernel-3-15-rc-3-on-ubuntu- linux-mint-and-their-derivative-systems/ and I don't see the "[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up" messages anymore, however the stability issue persists. If I try to run xrandr while the external DP monitor is in use, it either immediately reverts to the laptop screen or it crashes the system. In the case it did not crash the system, but rather reverted to the laptop screen, the following output was found in dmesg: [ 92.883726] [drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* failed to enable link training [ 92.890455] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to start channel equalization [ 92.921542] [drm:cpt_verify_modeset] *ERROR* mode set failed: pipe B stuck [ 92.985538] [ cut here ] [ 92.985578] WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 1371 at /home/apw/COD/linux/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:9755 check_encoder_state+0x1fa/0x270 [i915]() [ 92.985579] encoder's hw state doesn't match sw tracking (expected 1, found 0) [ 92.985580] Modules linked in: pci_stub vboxpci(OE) vboxnetadp(OE) vboxnetflt(OE) vboxdrv(OE) rfcomm bnep bluetooth binfmt_misc joydev asix usbnet mii uvcvideo intel_rapl x86_pkg_temp_thermal intel_powerclamp coretemp videobuf2_vmalloc videobuf2_memops arc4 kvm_intel videobuf2_core videodev kvm iwldvm mac80211 snd_hda_codec_hdmi crct10dif_pclmul snd_hda_codec_conexant crc32_pclmul snd_hda_codec_generic ghash_clmulni_intel iwlwifi aesni_intel thinkpad_acpi aes_x86_64 snd_hda_intel lrw nvram snd_hda_controller gf128mul glue_helper ablk_helper snd_seq_midi cryptd snd_seq_midi_event snd_rawmidi snd_hda_codec cfg80211 snd_seq snd_hwdep snd_pcm psmouse mei_me serio_raw snd_seq_device mei lpc_ich snd_timer snd soundcore parport_pc mac_hid ppdev lp parport raid10 raid456 async_raid6_recov async_memcpy async_pq async_xor async_tx xor raid6_pq raid1 raid0 multipath linear hid_generic usbhid hid i915 e1000e ahci i2c_algo_bit sdhci_pci drm_kms_helper libahci sdhci ptp pps_core drm wmi video [ 92.985613] CPU: 0 PID: 1371 Comm: Xorg Tainted: G OE 3.15.0-031500rc3-generic #201404280035 [ 92.985614] Hardware name: LENOVO 42872WU/42872WU, BIOS 8DET64WW (1.34 ) 08/31/2012 [ 92.985615] 261b 8801feefdb48 81756ad4 0007 [ 92.985617] 8801feefdb98 8801feefdb88 8106b89c 0304feefdb98 [ 92.985619] 88020f5d1000 88020f728320 88020f728000 [ 92.985620] Call Trace: [ 92.985626] [] dump_stack+0x46/0x58 [ 92.985628] [] warn_slowpath_common+0x8c/0xc0 [ 92.985630] [] warn_slowpath_fmt+0x46/0x50 [ 92.985642] [] check_encoder_state+0x1fa/0x270 [i915] [ 92.985655] [] intel_modeset_check_state+0x5d/0xa0 [i915] [ 92.985667] [] intel_set_mode+0x25/0x30 [i915] [ 92.985678] [] intel_crtc_set_config+0x196/0x2f0 [i915] [ 92.985682] [] ? kmem_cache_alloc_trace+0x12c/0x160 [ 92.985693] [] drm_mode_set_config_internal+0x60/0xf0 [drm] [ 92.985702] [] drm_mode_setcrtc+0x280/0x4e0 [drm] [ 92.985710] [] ? drm_modeset_unlock_all+0x52/0x60 [drm] [ 92.985717] [] drm_ioctl+0x23b/0x530 [drm] [ 92.985726] [] ? drm_mode_setplane+0x3f0/0x3f0 [drm] [ 92.985729] [] ? vtime_account_user+0x5d/0x70 [ 92.985732] [] do_vfs_ioctl+0x75/0x2c0 [ 92.985735] [] ? syscall_trace_enter+0x165/0x280 [ 92.985737] [] ? __fget_light+0x25/0x70 [ 92.985739] [] SyS_ioctl+0x91/0xb0 [ 92.985741] [] tracesys+0xe1/0xe6 [ 92.985743] ---[ end trace c770137b490c6c2e ]--- [ 92.985771] [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare] *ERROR* mismatch in has_dp_encoder (expected 1, found 0) [ 92.985772] [ cut here ] [ 92.985784] WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 1371 at /home/apw/COD/linux/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:9828 check_crtc_state+0x219/0x300 [i915]() [ 92.985785] pipe state doesn't match! Since the bug many people are experiencing is related to hard freezes where you *cannot* move the mouse anymore or ssh the machine, maybe a new bug should be opened with these directions in the title, and then people should be directed from this thread to that thread instead. I confirm that I am still experiencing this issue with kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic, that there is no obvious trigger (most of the times it happens while the computer is on at night or while I am at work and nobody is using it), that it happened with KDE as well as Unity. I have a new Vostro V131 which, I believe, is a Sandy bridge(?). Are most of the people with *this* version of the bug running Intel systems with integrated graphic card? I would like to understand what we have in common. It would be a first step. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/993187/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
I still have not experienced a single GPU hang since I added the options "i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0" to the grub command line. This website mentions problems which might relate to what some people in this forum are experiencing: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2011Q4.html In particular, I wonder if the "i915.semaphores=1" kernel option can help anybody here, as nobody has suggested it before. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
I want to mention that after following the suggestion at #274 (i915.i915_enable_rc6=0) and #280 (i915.i915_enable_fbc=0), my Dell Vostro V131 with Sandy Bridge and HD 3000 has not hard crashed (no mouse movement, no SysRq, no ssh) for about a week using kernel 3.4.1 (available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) while before I used to get 2-3 crashes a day. I am not sure at this point what exactly is making a difference (it could have been an update for what I know). I promise I will try to revert the settings and pinpoint what is fixing it for me. But reporting it now to let other people know that there is hope. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Provided that it is likely that people in this forum are affected by different bugs, I will share my own experience. I have been using in the last weeks kernel 3.4.1 (available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) on a Dell Vostro V131 with Sandy Bridge and HD 3000. With the following default kernel parameters (/etc/default/grub): 1) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 the system hangs (no mouse movements, no SysRq, no shh) within ~12 hours of operation. Changing to: 2) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 the system hangs within ~12 hours of operation. Changing to: 3) quiet splash pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 The system does not hang anymore even after several days of operation. It does seem like the combination of i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 and i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 completely fixes the issue for me. Here is the current output of "for file in /sys/module/i915/parameters/*; do echo -en $file"\t"; sudo cat $file; done": /sys/module/i915/parameters/enable_hangcheckY /sys/module/i915/parameters/fbpercrtc 0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_fbc 0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_ppgtt -1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/i915_enable_rc6 0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_downclock 0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/lvds_use_ssc-1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset -1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/panel_ignore_lid0 /sys/module/i915/parameters/powersave 1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/reset Y /sys/module/i915/parameters/semaphores -1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/vbt_sdvo_panel_type -1 It seems a plausible explanation is that there is something from the i915 driver triggering a GPU hang not correctly resolved. Could it be that this has to do with overheating and so it cannot be boiled down to a specific piece of code? I would be curios to see and hear if other people get it fixed with the same kernel parameters. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently
I confirm that I have had the same problem since I upgraded to Ubuntu Precise. The freezes I experience are completely random, sudden, and there is nothing I can do. I tried upgrading to 3.4.0 and I still experienced freezes. I tried downgrading to 3.0.0 and I still experience freezes. I have just now downgraded Xorg to 1.10.4 to see if this solves anything. When the machine freezes, somewhat more often than once a day, nothing works, keyboard does not respond, mouse doesn't move, SysRq does not work, and I cannot ssh to the machine. Even the fan kind of goes down (maybe because nothing is happening), but I can usually see the screen at the time of the freezing (even if the powersaving was active). No logs whatsoever get generated. If I didn't stumble into this post, I would have guessed something must have broken on my new laptop right at the same time I upgraded to Ubuntu Precise. I have a Dell Vostro V131 with shared graphic card using the i915 driver. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to help debugging this annoying bug. In ten years I have used Linux, this is the worst I have ever experienced. I am testing now if the Xorg downgrading brings any luck. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/993187/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently
I have to agree with yorgasor #20. There are two different bugs here. I happened to be affected by both. I could reproduce the google-earth bug by running google-earth and zooming into something. The X server would lock, but I could still move the mouse. Using the "sudo intel_reg_write 0x2120 '0x1206800'" fixes that bug for me, I can zoom fine with google- earth and the X server does not lock up anymore. But then I have also this other problem, that approximately every six hours the whole machine freezes. The keyboard doesn't respond, the mouse doesn't move, SysRq doesn't respond, and after a while I can hear the hard drive doesn't spin anymore, that is, the machine becomes very quiet. No logs get produced. I am at odds here. Downgrading the kernel doesn't fix it. Upgrading the kernel doesn't fix it. Downgrading the X server doesn't fix it. It all started after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise, but I am starting to weight the odds that this might be a hardware problem rather than a software problem.
