I think Lastique got a good explanation. How many people with this bug have actually two hard drives on their computer? I certainly did. For those trying to follow instructions on #27, make sure you install grub on each of your hard drives (i.e., both sda and sdb) by running "dpkg- reconfigure grub-pc" multiple times. My suggestion for the ubuntu team is to start telling users to create a bootable CD/USB before performing any distribution upgrade. I can just imagine this bug caused endless headaches to less experienced linux users.
