[Bug 395919] [NEW] network manager takes long time to connect then connection drops

2009-07-05 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit edition) and my wireless connection takes
ages to connect and sometimes fails to connect at all, then when you
first go to use the internet the connection drops and then re-
establishes. My wireless card uses the ath9k driver and up until
recently it had been very reliable. Once the connection re-establishes
it stays up fine.

I'm using Network Manager 0.7.0.100 and kernel 2.6.28-13

[Bug 284633] [NEW] blank screen after usplash in intrepid with SiS chipset

2008-10-16 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I'm getting a blank screen after usplash in intrepid. I hear a sound
suggesting that gdm has loaded but my screen is blank. Pressing alt-
ctrl-backspace to restart x does normally get gdm on screen. I have
also tried adding sisfb to /etc/modules but that caused gdm to hang
instead.

[Bug 352741] [NEW] Jerky DVD playback with desktop effects enabled in Jaunty using fglrx

2009-03-31 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

I've updated Jaunty today and thought I'd try playing a DVD. My laptop
uses an ATI Radeon HD3200 chipset and the video playback is choppy and
uses high CPU. Also, maximising the window or switching to full screen
in Totem causes X to crash.

If I disable Desktop effects, the playback quality is acceptable. I've

[Bug 352741] Re: Jerky DVD playback with desktop effects enabled in Jaunty using fglrx

2009-04-03 Thread notoriousdbp
Updated system today and can report that:

In totem-gstreamer:
Windowed DVD playback is jerky
Attempting to switch to full screen crashes X

In totem-xine:
Windowed DVD playback is jerky
Fullscreen is fine

In VLC
Windowed DVD playback is jerky
Fullscreen is fine

As totem-gstreamer is the default app then the fact that moving to
fullscreen crashes X makes this a critical fault

Updated today - still an issue. I wonder if Totem has been set up to
run in X11 output by default. This is because if, in VLC, I switch to
OpenGL output, the flickering video problem still exists. X11 is a lot
less efficient with resources for video output.

I would love it if someone other than me posted on this bug too

[Bug 151692] Usplash blank screen on shutdown

2007-10-11 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

I'm running 7.10 beta. Basically, on shutdown I get a blank screen.
Usplash is fine on boot up. I have tried the workaround of adding
vga=791 to the end of the line for my kernel (2.6.22-14 generic) which
is a method which has worked since 7.04. I have an Acer aspire 3003

[Bug 91747] lpd printing no longer possible - lpd printers can't be added

2007-03-12 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

In ubuntu 7.04, lpd printing is no longer possible, and it isn't
possible to add lpd printers. This has been the case since Saturday
10/3/07. Cups was updated, and my lpd printer would no longer print
saying "paused pending specific". I know of at least two other users
whohave the same problem. Since the occurence of the problem, foomatic
gui gave an error of "cannot read printer database". Using gnome-cups-
add to add a printer goes through all the steps to add the printer, yet
when you click Apply, the window disappears very quickly, and the
printer is not added. The printer I have is an Epson Stylus D88. I was
trying to add the host name 192.168.123.254 with a queue name of lpUSB0.
The printer was working fine with Ubuntu up to that point although there
was another issue of a 5cm gap appearing at the top of pages but that is

Mine might connect after a good 20+ attempts to connect. I've installed

[Bug 95795] Re: wireless does not connect through network-manager

2007-03-26 Thread notoriousdbp
I can confirm that this has been the case since 2.6.20-10. For the time
being I have changed to wicd to connect my wireless and that works fine.
I have 2.6.20-13 running at the moment. This really should be elevated
to critical as it will seriously affect the uptake of 7.04

2010-04-21 Thread notoriousdbp
Update - I have upgraded to 2.6.32-21 and the laptop was still running
hot by the time it booted up. However I noticed under 'Hardware
Drivers' that fglrx has now been made available. I have installed it
and the results are significantly better. The only disadvantage is that
Plymouth runs in 800 x 600 instead of my native 1366 x 768 but I'll live
with that and at least my 6 year-old wont suffer burns to her lap now.

I'm seeing the opposite. Using the open source driver for ATI cards the
laptop gets hot straight away and the fan kicks in. Using fglrx (the
proprietary driver) I have no trouble at all apart from Plymouth being
at a very low resolution. I wonder if we have two separate problems
here, one affecting those with ATI and the other affecting those with
Intel graphics chips

As it's a kernel module, you're unlikely to see anything in 10.04 unless
anything is backported which as a long term support release is
disappointing. So it will probably be in Maverick (of course Fedora 13

[Bug 373669] Re: [RV620] No power management with ati driver

2010-04-14 Thread notoriousdbp
Worth mentioning here that my laptop runs a lot hotter in Lucid than in
Karmic too. The fan is constantly running. I haven't tried using fglrx
instead as I feel that Lucid needs to be tested as it will be delivered.
With regards to the suggestions from madbiologist, I could do that but,
again, Lucid is really being aimed at the home user and corporate
markets so I look at it from the 'will the average user be able to do
that' aspect

I'm having this problem in Lucid. In Karmic using fglrx, my laptop

driver.

Is it me or has there been a general regression in wireless performance
with the 2.6.31 kernel. I have noticed worse performance with the

[Bug 661759] Re: HP G62-a50SM battery status

I think the power app is making a guess - ie it's calculating the power
when full and working out how much it's using over a period of time

least we get a rough idea of the time remaining now which is progress.
The underlying problem is still with the hardware which given HP's

[Bug 951228] [NEW] Inappropriate results for children - no parental control

2012-03-09 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

There doesn't appear to be any way of filtering the results returned in
the video lens to make them appropriate to younger users. This will be
a major concern for many. For example typing in "sonic the" returns a
result containing a swear word. Can a way be introduced of restricting
the results by the age of the user?

[Bug 563156] Re: [ATI Graphics][Lucid] laptop runs hot, shorter battery life, fan always on

2010-09-26 Thread notoriousdbp
While 10.10 is a massive improvement in terms of heat with the ATI
driver, it's still nowhere near the levels seen with the proprietary
driver. Only thing with the proprietary driver is that you don't get
Plymouth looking pretty. Interesting that fglrx became available in
hardware drivers the other day.

[Bug 661759] Re: HP G62-a50SM battery status

2011-08-31 Thread notoriousdbp
I've never had a problem with percentage remaining being available, this
really does look like a hardware problem as I don't get a time remaining
available in Windows. Interestingly, the HP Support Assistant software
can retrieve all the battery information that neither Windows itself or
Gnome can - maybe there's some proprietary code tucked away somewhere?

[Bug 678265] [NEW] 'do nothing' option for critical battery removed - prevents battery calibration

2010-11-21 Thread notoriousdbp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The option to 'do nothing' when the battery reaches critical level has
been removed. This means I am unable in Ubuntu to run my battery down
to 0% to recalibrate it. This was introduced in version 10.04 which
means I haven't been able to re-calibrate my battery in months and it's
starting to suffer as a result with the capacity constantly reducing.

Please can you re-instate the option so I can properly re-calibrate my
battery once again.

This is definitely not a duplicate of 410604. The percentage charge
reports fine although the capacity figures vary each time I boot up.
The time remaining can't calculate as the charge / discharge rate is not
reported for some reason in this bug. Completely different to the
'duplicate' case

I have this bug on my G62-b13SA and have upgraded the BIOS to F.46 but
the problem persists. That said, in Win 7 I don't get any estimate of
how long is left either which suggests it may be a hardware issue on the
laptop itself

[Bug 563156] Re: [ATI Graphics][Lucid] laptop runs hot, shorter battery life, fan always on

2010-06-21 Thread notoriousdbp
@userdce It's not the card, it's the open source driver which in my view
is still very much under development. The proprietary driver should be
available which has been proven to resolve the issue. As described
above, my laptop runs nearer 40 degrees C with the proprietary driver
and it's a steady climb to around the 60 mark with the open source one.
Ranting about the card isn't going to help anyone reach a solution.
