[Bug 98751] not fixed in gutsy gibbon!!
Hi, I have kubunto 7.10, i.e. the gutsy gibbon, and i experience the same problem. I boot the live CD and I can't access ANY of my hard disks, neither the internal one nor an external one (firewire). Icons do appear under "storage media" but I always get the error "hal- storage-fixed-mount refused uid 999" Does this only happen when booting "live" from the CD, or will I have the same problem after installing kubuntu on my hard drive?? Because this makes ubuntu totally useless. Four years ago I installed a Slackware linux in the very same computer and never had any problem in mounting and reading/writing the window partition. And nothing has changed in my hardware since then. -- feisty beta fails to mount hard drives https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98751 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a bug contact for kdelibs in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 159679] Re: Kubuntu Live CD fails to automount hard disk partitions - NOT DOLPHIN
Me too. I downloaded kubuntu 7.10 yesterday and experience exactly the same problem. Cannot access neither the internal nor the external hard drive!! Does anybody know whether it is "only" an issue with the live CD or it will persist after installing kubuntu? Because if so, it would make the whole system useless so instead of wasting my time installing it I would rather look for another distro. -- Kubuntu Live CD fails to automount hard disk partitions - NOT DOLPHIN https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159679 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 37821] Re: Regular network drops with madwifi
> It wasn't *really* a bug with madwifi as such Oh yes it was. If madwifi isn't capable of scanning when already connected, then it just shouldn't do the scan when given the order by NetworkManager (or by whoever). Either you support a feature or you don't support it; if you don't, you should refuse to do it when asked, either ignoring the request or returning an error. -- Regular network drops with madwifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/37821 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 37821] Re: Regular network drops with madwifi
I'm trying Ubunto 7.10 live CD with a DWL-G650 (atheros AR5212 chipset) on an intel pentium4. I just boot the live CD and try to connect to my wifi network which is WEP-encrypted. I have the exact symptoms described in the original post: wasn't this supposed to be fixed Should I assume my problem is not due to this bug, or isn't the fixed version of network manager included in the latest ubuntu release? [Bug 37821] Re: Regular network drops with madwifi
@Chris: > Well Matteo, I think that various people have various opinions on the > matter. It's probably best not raking over those old coals again is > it? ;-) I guess it is not. Sorry about that. Didn't mean to offend anyone though. However, maybe in my case it is not this very bug, but symptoms are the same and I couldn't in any way get my wifi card to work correctly with madwifi. - Disabling Network Manager didn't help (see my previous post) - sudo iwpriv ath0 bgscan 0 didn't help. - A few other "solutions" I found on similar bug reports didn't help. The only way I could get connected was by getting rid of madwifi and using ndiswrapper + windows drivers. I tried 8 linux distros, including Ubuntu; all of them booted with the live CD come out of the box with madwifi as the driver of the wifi card, the card is recognized and supposed to be working; however ALL of them exhibit more or less the behaviour described in this report: I can connect every once in a while and then lose connection soon. Latest version today of all the distros I tried, though probably this doesn't mean they include the latest version of madwifi. Both in Ubuntu and Sabayon, I could easily get the connection working (at least as well as solid and fast as in windows) by replacing madwifi with ndiswrapper, without even touching network manager. -- Regular network drops with madwifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/37821 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1255670] [NEW] Battery indicator shows an almost empty battery when charging though the battery is almost full
Public bug reported: Right now, if I disconnect the charger from the laptop, the battery indicator shows an almost-empty battery with an electricity symbol - whose meaning can only be that the battery is almost empty and is being charged. If I disconnect the charger, then the icon shows a completely full battery (without the electricity symbol). Which can only mean that the battery is practically full. So the information displayed is contraddictory. The former is wrong, and the latter is right. The battery is actually almost full. If I click on the icon when charging (connected), it says "0:13 to charge". If I click on it when disconnected, it says "3:45 left". These are consistent with each other, and with the fact that the battery actually _is_ almost full. The battery is almost new and it takes pretty long to discharge, so it can't be almost full and almost empty at the same time, nor is the measured value unreliable. The fact that the textual information is correct confirms this. It's a bug in the way the information is displayed graphically. Actually, while I was writing, the charging completed, the battery is now full. If I click on the icon, it says "Battery (100%)". However, the icon still shows the almost empty battery. [Bug 1255679] [NEW] Battery status should show percentage as well as (or rather than) time or allow you to choose
Public bug reported: When you click on the battery icon (or if you have checked the "show time in menu bar" option) It's great that the battery indicator tells you how much *time* is needed to finish charging the battery (when charging), or how much time is left (when discharging), even though we all know this estimate is far from reliable. However, this cannot come at the price of not knowing the *percentage* of charge. Given its intrinsic unreliability, the time information is almost useless in most cases. The percentage MUST be shown. Three behaviors would be acceptable: - only show percentage - show both percentage and time - let me choose But showing only time is definitely wrong. Additionally, to add more confusion and frustration, the indicator exhibits the following twisted behavior: When you click on the icon: - Connected and charging => "x:xx to charge" - Connected and fully charged => sometimes "100%", sometimes "charged" - Disconnected => "y:yy left" When you have already clicked on it and the submenu is already visible, and you connect or disconnect the charger, then value is updated in the following way, and then after a few seconds it changes to the behavior described above: - Just connected and fully charged => "charged" (then it may change to "100%", or not) - Just connected and charging => "nn%" (then it changes to "x:xx to charge") - Just disconnected => "nn%" (then it changes to "y:yy left") When the "show time in Menu Bar" option is checked, the behavior is the same as described above (including the changes when connecting/disconnecting) with the slight difference that instead of "charged" nothing is shown. Actually I suspect the difference between "100%" and "charged" above is not random but maybe 100% means "more than 99.5% but still detectably less than 100%", while "charged" means "not distinguishable from 100% as far as the sensor can tell". If that is the case, this distinction is not significant to the user and this way of conveying it is confusing. It would be more fair to either show "99%" whenever the battery is detectably non-full (even if it is greater than 99.5%) or to always show either "100%" or "charged" (but always the same) when the amount of charge rounds up to 100%. [Bug 1256425] [NEW] whole screen became blank white - no recovery possible - after unplugging and replugging external monitor
Public bug reported: I have a laptop with an external monitor connected. When the monitor is connected, I only use the external monitor. Usually, when I unplug the monitor, the screen switches automatically, i.e. the builtin screen turns on; when I replug the external monitor, the builtin screen turns off an the external monitor turns on. A few minutes ago I unplugged the external monitor, and the builtin screen became all white. I could see the mouse cursor on a white background and nothing else. The mouse cursor moved smoothly, but I could'nt do anything. Keystrokes such as tab, atl+tab, ctrl+alt+T (to open a terminal), Ctrl+Super+D, and the like, did absolutely nothing (or they do what they are supposed to do but I couldn't see it because the screen remained white. Replugging the monitor didn't fix the issue. When I plugged the monitor, the builtin screen would turn off, the external monitor would turn on but I could only see a white rectangle (probably of the same size as the laptop built in screen) on a black background, and the mouse cursor. Switching between virtual terminals (i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and Ctrl+Alt+F7) worked, but wouldn't fix the issue. I had no other option than reboot (which I had to do from the F1 virtual terminal), obviously losing all my unsaved work because of such a stupid bug, when probably all programs were running fine but invisibly. Please tell me what can be done to force a "wake up" of the screen as a workaround so next time this happens at least I don't have to reboot and lose all my data. I think this is a REGRESSION, or at least I had never, ever seen this before in years of using ubuntu. [Bug 1263786] Re: Nonsense behavior of scrollwheel over Launcher
According to your reasoning, and as I already mentioned in my report, the current behavior makes perfect sense WHEN THE ICON HAS MORE THAN ONE WINDOW and one of them is already the one with focus. That is: put the mouse cursor on an icon that has more than one window, one of which has already focus. Move the scrollwheel. It switches windows. Ok, makes sense (given the "use the mouse wheel to switch between multiple-data display element in a GUI", which is a shitty way of using the mouse wheel that regretfully has become widespread, but if we accept that, it's consistent). Now put the mouse cursor on a random icon on the launcher which has only one window (there's no data elements to switch between at all). Move the mouse wheel => that window gets focus, and you can't give focus back to the window that previously had it unless you look for it and click on it. That does not make sense and it is an annoyance. You don't expect the current application to be switched without a positive click: well that's exactly what happens: current application is switched with just a movement of the mouse wheel over the icon of another application. Having the mousewheel cycle through icons in the whole launcher would make as much sense as it makes to cycle through tabs within a window when you place the mouse cursor over any tab of e.g. Google Chrome or Ubuntu's Terminal and move the scrollwheel: something that I hate and I would happily get rid of, but it is kind of consistent in that, if you do that by accident, you can "go back" by moving the wheel back. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1263786 Title: Nonsense behavior of scrollwheel over Launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1263786/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1264152] [NEW] Syntax highlight: nonsense pink coloring of portions of expressions in JS
Public bug reported: See screenshot. This is a JS file. There are portions of expressions that are incorrectly highlighted in pink as if they were strings. There is no syntax error before or after the captured portion of text. The script is parsed as expected by the javascript interpreter, so the syntax highlight is wrong. [Bug 1264280] [NEW] Cannot browse file on bluetooth device. Nonsense error message
Public bug reported: Usually I can browse files on my mobile connected via bluetooth from the computer. Same computer, same phone, now I can't. - Click on the bluetooth icon on the notification area - select "bluetooth settings" (directly selecting "Browse files" within the submenu under the name of the device wouldn't work, as per bug #1254106) - select the device which is the only one in the list and click "Browse files". => I get this nonsense error message: "Unable to find the requested file. Please check the spelling and try again" And below: "Unhandled error message: Unable to load location". Note the error message suggesting to check the spelling is particularly stupid as no typing is involved in the process. I've done a hcidump during the process and it is COMPLETELY EMPTY. I have removed the phone from the devices, paired it again from scratch, and it does not fix the issue. It used to work until very few days ago. [Bug 1264280] Re: Cannot browse file on bluetooth device. Nonsense error message
After this, I noticed that the mobile device was listed on the bottom of the left panel of Nautilus. So I clicked it, and Nautilus crashed. After that, I relaunched Nautilus, and now browsing the mobile device works both from Nautilus (clicking on the device name on the left panel) and from the Bluetooth application (following the steps in the report) After this, when I open Nautilus, it generates a new icon in the Launcher instead of just adding an arrow on the left of the existing launcher icon. There's certainly a bug in Nautilus as it crashed; I don't know if it's _only_ nautilus or if bluetooth has an issue as well. ** Package changed: bluez (Ubuntu) => nautilus (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1264280 Title: Cannot browse file on bluetooth device. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1289977 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1289977 Public bug reported: Great! I decided to finally upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04, and after the whole upgrade process and the restart, the computer won't boot!! I get a black screen with this error instead of the familiar boot menu: error: symbol `grub_term_highlight_color' not found grub rescue> _ Not only can't I boot ubuntu, I can't boot any other OS I had installed on the computer (namely Windows 8). I am reporting this from another computer. How do I fix it now? Do you test distribution upgrades before releasing them? Well, obviously not enough. And _after_ releasing them, because it's been a f***ing month or two since it was released. At EVERY SINGLE UPGRADE I always get some huge problem that renders my system completely unusable and needs some pretty radical fix. But this is the most f***ed up and low level one ever. At the next upgrade I guess I'll get hardware damage. During the upgrade there was some crash: the "system problem detected" (or whatever it is called) window popped up, informing of some crash related to VirtualBox (and uslessly offering me the option to report it, just to later tell me it couldn't be reported, as usual with third-party packages). I don't know if that is related and I know that's a third party package, however distribution-upgrade must be rocksolid and it can't brick a whole system just because of a broken package (even assuming that's broken). It must either fix the problem with the package, or offer the option to remove it, or roll back the whole upgrade if it cannot be complete 100% safely. [Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white
Ubuntu 13.04 on a different computer; now I'm using noveau (or whatever it's called what comes by default with Ubuntu) instead of proprietary Nvidia drivers. Problem still there, but windows are now TRANSPARENT instead of black. It's not just switching windows, it's WHATEVER RANDOM WINDOW that is opened and given focus, including even popups (e.g. confirmation or error popups) and submenus. Examples: - in Gedit you hit Ctrl+H, and the Search and Replace window that pops up, at random times is transparent. - in Google Chrome you click on the menu button on the top-right corner: the submenu at random times is transparent - in Nautilus, you right-click on the background of a folder; the context menu is fine but when you choose a submenu item, the submenu comes up transparent (but it works if you know where to click blindly) All of these happen at random times, but when they start happening with a given application, they will usually keep happening systematically untill you close and relaunch that application. [Bug 1250186] [NEW] "caps lock" state feedback is not sent to keyboard led when plugged (NumLock IS, which is ok). Neither CapsLock nor NumLock feedback is sent to led when state changes (e.g. by othe
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: - plug a usb keyboard - Lock caps. Type something in uppercase. The keyboard caps lock led is on - unplug keyboard - replug keyboard - type something - then hit the caps lock key again and type Expected: any of these would be correct: - either A) the keyboard caps lock led turns on when plugging the keyboard, and what you type is uppercase - or B) the keyboard led is systematically off after replugging the keyboard and what you type is lowercase Then, after hitting Caps Lock again, the status of the led should keep consistent with the actual status, that is, if the led is on, you type uppercase, and if it's off, you type lowercase. Observed: After replugging, The keyboard led is off but what you type is uppercase. Then, after hitting Caps Lock, the led turns on (indicating caps lock is on) but what you type is lowercase. The status stays inverted. That is, the system remembers caps lock status after unplugging and replugging a keyboard, though no feedback is sent to the keyboard; the keyboard's led status is reset but the system's caps lock status is preserved, so it becomes inconsistent. Every stroke of the Caps Lock key just toggles both the led and the real typing status, which remain inconsistent. Additionally, if the computer is a laptop, both keyboards share the same caps lock actual status (meaning hitting Caps lock in one of them will affect typing on both) but the external keyboard's led is only toggled when the external keyboard's own caps lock key is hit - that is, if you use both keyboards' caps lock keys, you get inconsistency between what is shown on the led and what is the real status. Demonstration that this is an issue in the OS and not in the keyboard: NUM LOCK BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY, AND ALMOST AS EXPECTED, and I strongly doubt Caps Lock and NumLock are different at low level. Num lock status is remembered AND sent back to the keyboard led when reconnected (so feedback IS possible for NumLock and is done correctly on replugging). However, numlock status feedback is not sent to external keyboard (not correctly at least) when changing numlock status. It is only sent when connecting. So, consistency can be lost if using multiple keyboards, and it does not get fixed the next time you strike numlock. That is: - boot and plug the keyboard (or boot with the keyboard plugged; result is the same) - try numeric keyboard => result: numlock status is remembered from the last boot and is displayed consistently on led. - hit numlock on external keyboard => result: status is toggled and consistently shown on led - hit the numlock key as many times as needed on external keyboard to turn num lock on - unplug keyboard - replug keyboard - try numeric keys => behaves as ON; displayed as ON on led - turn it off - unplug/replug keyboard => behaves as OFF, displayed as OFF. Everything's fine - hit the numlock key on the built-in keyboard - try numeric keys on external keyboard => behaves as OFF; still displayed as ON. FAIL! - unplug/replug external keyboard => still behaves as OFF, now displayed as OFF. Consistency recovered! So, NumLock behavior is better than CapsLock behavior, but still not completely correct. It demosntrates that the OS CAN do what is needed to maintain consistency between led status and internal status, so the OS SHOULD do that. Unless numlock and capslock work differently at the hardware level, this should be fixed for Caps Lock too ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: linux-image-3.8.0-32-generic 3.8.0-32.47 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-32.47-generic 3.8.13.10 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8.5 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: teo2191 F pulseaudio Date: Mon Nov 11 19:18:12 2013 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=ff7e702a-a05a-47fd-8c14-551e81f9e9e3 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-10-11 (31 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130424) MachineType: Acer Aspire V3-571G MarkForUpload: True ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-32-generic root=UUID=5830b30e-69e8-4bb4-8a2b-bc2b43c7414a ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 RelatedPackageVersions: linux-restricted-modules-3.8.0-32-generic N/A linux-backports-modules-3.8.0-32-generic N/A linux-firmware1.106 SourcePackage: linux UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 10/15/2012 dmi.bios.vendor: Acer dmi.bios.version: V2.07 dmi.board.asset.tag: Type2 - Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: VA50_HC_CR dmi.board.vendor: Acer dmi.board.version: Type2 - Board Version dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Acer dmi.chassis.version: V2.07 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAcer:bvrV2.07:bd10/15/2012:svnAcer:pnAspireV3-571G:pvrV2.07:rvnAcer:rnVA50_HC_CR:rvrType2-BoardVersion:cvnAcer:ct10:cvrV2.07: dmi.product.name: Aspire V3-571G dmi.produc

[Bug 1239402] Re: continuously resumes from suspend when battery is critically low
It's not related to the battery, or anyway it's not necessarily when critically low. The first time I observed it the battery was low so I thought that was what triggered the issue. However now it's happening again, and the battery is completely charged (and connected to power). I suspend, then it immediately spontaneously resumes. Once it starts, it's systematic, that is I've tried like 6 or 7 times to suspend and it always resume. This seems to appear randomly: I had suspended dozens of times without problems after the last time I had observed the issue. [Bug 1250407] [NEW] printer has stopped working. "Filter failed"
Public bug reported: My printer was working fine until yesterday. A printing job was interrupted with a good reason because I disconnected the usb. However, I then reconnected the printer and rebooted, and cancelled the pending job. Now the printer doesn't print any more. Whenever I try, the printer icon appears in the notification area, and if I click on it, the printer is listed as "paused". If I select it, the "Document print status" shows the job as "pending". If I go to "Printers", the printer is shown with a green checkmark. If I double click it to see "Printer Properties", under the "Settings" tab, under "Printer State" it says: "Stopped - Filter failed" Unplugging and replugging the printer doesn't fix the issue, nor does turning it off and on again, cancelling and restarting the printing job. $ cat /var/log/cups/error_log W [12/Nov/2013:01:27:24 +0100] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id 'hp-Gray..' already exists W [12/Nov/2013:01:27:24 +0100] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id 'hp-RGB..' already exists W [12/Nov/2013:10:03:38 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface `org.freedesktop.ColorManager' on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp W [12/Nov/2013:10:03:38 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface `org.freedesktop.ColorManager' on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: cups 1.6.2-1ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-33.48-generic 3.8.13.11 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-33-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8.5 Architecture: amd64 CupsErrorLog: W [12/Nov/2013:01:27:24 +0100] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id 'hp-Gray..' already exists W [12/Nov/2013:01:27:24 +0100] CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists:profile id 'hp-RGB..' already exists W [12/Nov/2013:10:03:38 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface `org.freedesktop.ColorManager' on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp W [12/Nov/2013:10:03:38 +0100] AddProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:No such interface `org.freedesktop.ColorManager' on object at path /org/freedesktop/ColorManager/devices/cups_hp Date: Tue Nov 12 12:12:33 2013 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-10-11 (31 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130424) Lpstat: device for hp: hp:/usb/DeskJet_940C?serial=MY17O671S5BH MachineType: Acer Aspire V3-571G MarkForUpload: True Papersize: a4 PpdFiles: hp: HP Deskjet 940c, hpcups 3.13.3 ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-33-generic root=UUID=5830b30e-69e8-4bb4-8a2b-bc2b43c7414a ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: cups UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 10/15/2012 dmi.bios.vendor: Acer dmi.bios.version: V2.07 dmi.board.asset.tag: Type2 - Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: VA50_HC_CR dmi.board.vendor: Acer dmi.board.version: Type2 - Board Version dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Acer dmi.chassis.version: V2.07 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAcer:bvrV2.07:bd10/15/2012:svnAcer:pnAspireV3-571G:pvrV2.07:rvnAcer:rnVA50_HC_CR:rvrType2-BoardVersion:cvnAcer:ct10:cvrV2.07: dmi.product.name: Aspire V3-571G dmi.product.version: V2.07 dmi.sys.vendor: Acer ** Affects: cups (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug raring -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1250407 Title: printer has stopped working. [Bug 1250488] [NEW] USB hub stopped working on a given USB port (would work on any other port). Reboot fixed the issue
Public bug reported: I have two USB ports that I usually use interchangeably: to port A I connect the mouse, to port B I connect a USB hub (to which I connect a keyboard, printer and other devices). Suddenly (probably after resuming from a suspend), the USB hub stopped working when connected to port A. It would work fine, however, if connected to port B. When I say the hub stopped working I mean that any device (even a keyboard) wouldn't work if connected through the hub. I exchanged ports dozens of times and 100% checked that: - mouse and keyboard would systematically work fine if connected directly to any of the ports A or B - the USB hub would systematically work fine only if connected to port B - the USB hub would systematically fail (i.e. no device connected through it would ever work) if connected to port A Now I've rebooted, and everything works as expected again: the USB hub always works fine whether I connect it to port A or B. I thought this was something physical until I rebooted and found out that everything works again. This is absolutely ridiculous. [Bug 1250615] [NEW] Systematically always rejects all transfers from mobile device. Ne way to send a file to this computer
Public bug reported: Fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 on an Acer laptop. All file transfers via bluetooth from a (Android) mobile device get systematically rejected. This is somehow different (as far as observed symptoms are concerned) from #958661 On another computer, where I also had Ubuntu 13.04 (upgraded from earlier releases), transfers from bluetooth device would usually work; then at random times (probably after suspending and resuming) they would start being systematically rejected; turning bluetooth physically off and on again via the hardware switch would fix the issue. That's issue 958661. Now, on this other computer, all file transfers are always systematically rejected. I've never, ever been able to send a file via bluetooth to this computer. I'm sending them from the same device that would (usually) succeed to send them to the old computer. I can, however, browse files from the computer on the same device. So, bluetooth does kind of work in general, it's not like I don't have bluetooth. But incoming file transfers get systematically rejected and I can't find any setting anywhere that says that file transfers are to be rejected or accepted. Why has this been changed to incomplete without an explanation? If it's incomplete, then tell me what is missing. Also, importance "medium" is wrong. Meets this criteria for "critical": - Severely affects applications beyond the package responsible for the root cause or at the very least, these for "high": - Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated) [not being able to use a usb hub at all is a severe impact; users with only one usb port affected by the bug are an estimated small portion of users] - A problem with an essential hardware component (disk controller, built-in networking, video card, keyboard, mouse) [all the listed components could be connected via a usb hub] - Renders essential features or functionality of the application or dependencies broken or ineffective -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1250488 Title: USB hub stopped working on a given USB port (would work on any other port). [Bug 1213457] [NEW] [REGRESSION 13.04] Most of Nautilus menus are gone
Public bug reported: I realize this is obviously by design, but there's no good reason for such a design which is plain wrong, so it has to be reverted. Nautilus used to have a normal menu similar to most applications: File, Edit, View... Now it only has a "Files" menu (where "Files" is the new "shown name" for Nautilus, formerly known as "Home Directory" and god knows what will be its name in the next release, consistently with Ubuntu's absurd obsession of changing the most basic programs' names and always hide the real name, in this case Nautilus). Why isn't there any more, for example, an Edit menu with a "Copy", "Paste", "Cut", etc items? Of course all those things can be done in other ways, but since we're going to have a menu bar on the top of the screen anyway, it's nonsensical to remove from it all the menus one expects to find, consistently with all applications. Also, that was a place where one could se the keyboard shortcuts associated to each action. Or name one single good reason for removing the traditional application menus. Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: - click on the nm-applet indicator to unfold the dropdown menu - choose a wifi network to connect to - select it and wait until it connects Expected behavior - should show a "connecting" animation while it is establishing the connection - animation should stop and be replaced by the "connected" icon as soon as the connection is established. [Bug 1213961] [NEW] The new search "feature" is a huge step backwards in usability
Public bug reported: How it used to work till Ubuntu 12.10: A - on the top of the window there used to be a search button. Only if you clicked it, a search textfield would appear and you could do a file search B - on the other hand, without performing any search, just by typing the beginning of a file name, if a file or folder existed within the current folder that matched the typed string, it would be SELECTED. Ok, both features needed some improvement, and particularly "B" had some glitches, but the way they have been unified now is... I'll refrain from saying what I was going to say and I'll just say it is NOT even closely the right solution. Actually it's much worse. How it works now: - on the top of the windows there is always a HUGE textfield for searching, which occupies a lot of space, and is always focused - when you type a string, it is typed in that searchbox, and all the contents of the current window are FILTERED, meaning all the files or folders that don't match are hidden. - when you do so, the current path stops being shown on the top (this is one of the worst parts) - The possibility to type a partial filename and have the file/folder selected, but without hiding the rest and without hiding the path, is gone. While this could be a good replacement for the old search proper, it is a dramatic step backwards in usability for those who used to use the "B" thing. Why this is a terribly bad idea: - this is SLOW. Selecting the matching files was fast; now filtering all the contents is much slower, and can become tremendously slow when the number of items in the folder is big - you stop seeing the rest of files; while this may be desired in some cases, it may well be not, so one should be able to choose. In the old version you could choose: if you wanted a search you did a search, if you wanted to quickly select a file by typing its name, you wouid still see the rest of the files. We loose one option - you stop seeing the path on the top (until you clear the contents of the search box, of course). That's annoying - the always-present search textfield needlessly uses a lot of space whether or not you're going to use it What are the advantages: - can't think of a single one It is an error to try to unify two totally different fetures, i.e. SEARCHING on one hand, and SELECTING an item by typing its name rather than clicking it, on the other hand; they have been unified into one feature that doesn't fulfill decently any of those two completely different needs; or perhaps one (the search) but definitely not the other. [Bug 975316] [NEW] wiki network performance degrades awfully where other OSes work just fine
Public bug reported: In some situations where the strength (or SNR) of the signal coming from the wifi access point is not very good, network performance becomes close to unusable: a lot of network operation fail, eternal waits, timeouts, packet loss, even data corruption. I have experimented this on several different wifi networks. I always blamed the strength of the signal and thought it was completely normal, as all the issues disappear when the computer is nearer to the AP. But recently I've noticed that other machines (and even mobile devices) in the same networks and in the same physical places with other operating system work just fine. It could still be my hardware, but now I've finally seen that even Windows on the same machine doesn't have any issue with the same network, so there's definitely some software issue here. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'XXX'" - The folder is apparently opened (meaning its name is shown on the top of the window or tab and you see an empty folder), - the cursor shows the waiting animation forever, and on the bottom-right corner you see "loading" forever, until you click on the "X" to cancel the loading Expected behavior: - you should get the error message 'You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "XXX"' - you should keep seing the containing folder, there's no point in faking the opening of the folder if you're not going to be able to see its contents, ever - as soon as the dialog with the error message appears, the loading/waiting animations should stop (or never start in the first place). There's no point to keep waiting forever something that will never happen under any circumstances, and to force the user to explicitely cancel an operation that has already failed ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: nautilus 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu4.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-19.32-generic 3.0.27 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-19-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4 Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Apr 23 10:48:57 2012 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: nautilus UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to oneiric on 2011-12-07 (137 days ago) ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 oneiric running-unity -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/987178 Title: shows "loading" and waiting icon forever after access denied to remote samba folder To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/987178/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 989555] Re: .inc files are opened in browser by default
Well the bug is still valid: if the file contains html AND PHP, it should open it with the text editor as it does with .php files. Opening it in the browser is not "the correct thing" at all. It would be acceptable if it contains _only_ html (though with a .inc extension I would deem more reasonable opening it in gedit even in the case of only html content). ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/989555 Title: .inc files are opened in browser by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/989555/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 990528] [NEW] no clue is given of whether computing total size of folder is done
Public bug reported: - right click on a folder with a lot of gigabytes of contents - select "Properties" - look at the total size The size shown increases while it is computed, until it finally stops increasing. No clue is given whether it is done computing or not. Wnen it stops increasing for a few seconds for whatever reason, you wonder whether it has reached the total or not, and you have no way to know except wait a few seconds more, and if it still doesn't grow, you can guess it's done. Oh, I see, it depends on the contents of the file. If the file contains html code (even if it contains also php code as in my case), it opens in the browser. [Bug 956239] Re: gedit is not given focus when opening a text file with double click
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ubuntu ** Description changed: I'm not completely sure whether this is a bug in Nautilus, Unity or Gedit. Steps to reproduce: - Navigate to a folder in Nautilus containing a text file - double click on the text file - When prompted whether to display or run, choose display => Expected: the file should be opened in Gedit and Gedit's window should be on front and get focus => Observed: the file is opened in Gedit; Gedit's window is on front/top of every other window but it doesn't have focus. For example, I typically hit ctrl+F to search the text and I actually do the search in Nautilus behind.
