[Bug 496076] [NEW] notifications volume
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-media The problem is with volume of notifications control. When I move it to the left edge the 'disabled' check box appears. [Bug 1746418] Re: System freezes when starting Xorg after installing linux-image-4.13.0-32-generic
Looks like I've got this one too on Lenovo P50 with E3-1505M. I've created #1759997 since I was not able to trace it immediately to this bug. [Bug 36812]
Dear xorg developers. This is an old bug. In fact this is a 13 years old bug. And it has been at least 7 years since this bug had a patch to fix it. Yes, existing patch breaks specification. But one would seem that the fact that patch existed for 7 years and was applied by default by popular distributions without users` complains would suggest that existing patch is a practical solution to the problem despite breaking theoretical (and as discussed here - not well thought through) specification. There is now once more spike of activity here - probably because Ubuntu 17.04 was released recently which dropped this patch because it was not compatible with newer xorg. kyak has provided an updated patch, but it would take a lot of time for distributions to pick it up and then circle would repeat with next xorg version. Yes, there has been a few heated discussions around this patch and XKB specification. And yes, specifications are important, but this is really annoying problem for people with more than one keyboard layout. Annoying to the point of making xorg really unusable for some groups of people. So is there any chance to get more practical with this bug? For example, kyak's patch has a function 'xkbSwitchGroupOnRelease' that is a stub to make new behaviour controllable by configuration. Would xorg maintainers find this patch acceptable to upstream if that function read value from some environment variable and only turned new behaviour on if it was set? I feel like it would allow XKB spec to stay and also would allow users affected by this problem to solve it without recompiling xorg - which average user would struggle to do. Looking forward to your reply. [Bug 1683383] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts (reopen)
That patch that fixes the problem has been applied in Ubuntu for way more than 'couple of years' Unfortunately using right keys for modifiers doesn't work well with people who use 10 finger typing - they are used to press certain keys with certain fingers - to speed up their typing, and using wrong hand slows things down and leads to errors. [Bug 1553885] [NEW] VPN split DNS gets broken after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: I've got a company's VPN server I connect to. When I connect to it I get several DNS entries for split DNS configuration and this works fine. After suspend/resume cycle I reconnect to VPN and see those split DNS entries added along with entries for VPN's DNS servers that do not have domain attached to it (i.e. not split). Disconnecting and reconnecting to VPN doesn't solve the problem: those non split entries gets stuck until I restart NetworkManager. [Bug 1327659] Re: Compiz freezes when screen is disconnected
I did some 'gdbing' and located cause of the issue. The problem (only?) happens when texture compression is enabled. So, if texture compression is enabled GLFramebufferObject::allocate allocates texture that is compressed and apparently mesa doesn't like compressed textures for frame buffer. Oddly enough enabled compression doesn't cause the problem when texture is allocated first time at startup, but only causes problem when it is reallocated when resolution changes. Probably because custom config is loaded at a later stage somehow - but this is not exactly apparent why config is loaded at a later stage. Judging by the log output config should be loaded by the time opengl plugin is loaded. I guess ideally enabling texture compression should not cause such issues. Please let me know if I can provide any other information. [Bug 929334] Re: nginx deny all doesn't support ipv6
This is not true. Stock nginx in Lucid does support ipv6 and is configured to support it by default - please see config above. Also since 'deny all' doesn't work with ipv6 '/doc' is opened to everybody on ipv6 in the config above which is not exactly what was intended. I'm not saying that nginx version should be updated since problem can be easily worked around. All I'm saying is that default config should be fixed to properly work with ipv6 - this is security problem in LTS version after all. Also it would be nice to have clear comment in default config that ipv6 doesn't work with 'deny all'. [Bug 929334] Re: nginx deny all doesn't support ipv6
The problem is that module in question is used by default config (see 'deny all' in '/doc' in config above). This is not a huge security problem by itself (after all only static doc becomes available on machine with ipv6 connectivity. The more serious issue is that users might use that '/doc' definition as an example for their own configurations and get serious security holes (especially considering similarity with apache config in this case). And I think it is pretty reasonable for the user to assume that stock config performs in reasonable and expected way. The problem might become more frequent as users move to ipv6 support on existing installations - this might be not that infrequent with all this 'ipv6 day' buzz. The fix would be to use 'return 403;' instead of 'deny all' in default nginx config in '/doc' section. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with debdiff tool and I'll have to spend some time learning it. I'll try to do this, but this won't be very fast. In any case I would appreciate if you could incorporate trivial fix I mentioned above along with some explanation why this is being done into changes for #956150. [Bug 799104] Re: Wobbly Windows maximise effect triggers on focus
Hi. Sorry for the delay. Here is how I'm able to reproduce this problem: 1) Boot up Ubuntu 12.04 live cd 2) Install CCSM (you'll probably need to update apt sources) 3) Run CCSM disable ubuntu unity plugin and enable wobbly windows. You might need to enable other plugins to make system usable. 4) Restart compiz with 'compiz --replace ccsm' After this once you switch to maximised window it wobbles. My wild guess would be that unity plugin handles header of maximized windows in some custom way and this problem is not visible when it is enabled. I do understand that this means that unity users are not affected, but users of other desktop environments are e.g. xfce and, dare I say, mate. I would really appreciate if you could look into this. [Bug 796381] [NEW] Too many language variants
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dictionaries-common In almost every application which can check spelling (FF, Pidgin, gedit) I get several variants of English language - US, UK, AU, CA - 5 in total. It seems logical to me that 99% of Ubuntu installations have English language (and dictionaries) installed, and 99% of users never use more then 1 English variant (and many people do not really know what the difference is). So there are 5 options in spell check menu which just confuse users and are never used. This seems to be not user friendly at all. Currently it even seems impossible to manually remove packages with language variants one doesn't use since language-support-en and language-support-writing-en depend on them. It would be expected that user could select language variants he wants to use and then only these variants get displayed all over the system. I'll really appreciate if this could be solved and Ubuntu UI could be made more friendly to people. I'll be happy to provide any additional information. Thanks! [Bug 796371] Re: Pidgin spell check languages names are not human readable
Sorry, I'll try to describe this in more detail. 1) Steps to reproduce: * start Pidgin * open chat window * right-click in the text box where you normally type message (to open context menu) and point mouse 'Languages' option. 2) Behavior expected: languages submenu should contain human readable names, like 'English', 'Russian'. Other applications (e.g. Firefox, LibreOffice) do this. 3) In the submenu which appears there is a list of languages installed in the system, which literally says: en_AU, en_CA, en_GB, en_US, en_ZA, ru_RU. See attachment for menu screenshot. Also, please note that I have Russian language selected for my account - just in case this affects something. I think that this problem appeared after Natty updated (I do not remember having this issue before). Please let me know if I could provide more information. ** Attachment added: "menu-shot.xcf" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/796371/+attachment/2167456/+files/menu-shot.xcf -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796371 Title: Pidgin spell check languages names are not human readable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/796371/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 796722] [NEW] Drop down menu has a lot of empty space

[Bug 796381] Re: Too many language variants
Hi, even for 'non-single-user' installation, for desktops I think it reasonable to assume that all users speak more or less same language and it would be very rare if this includes several different English variants. :) Actually, if I could make a suggestion here it seems to me that now all dictionaries installed somewhere in /usr/share/(myspell|humspell) and there is a lot of simlinking involved. So, it might make sense to allow users to make something like ~/.myspell, ~/.mhunspell which links to dictionaries. With help of command line, maybe some scripts or simple UI around this one could select set of languages he uses. And the only change needed for this - to make spell checking libraries look for dictionaries in somewhere home dir, and if that dir doesn't exist - in system location. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796381 Title: Too many language variants To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dictionaries-common/+bug/796381/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've submitted bugreport with patch to samba bugzilla: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8010 . Thanks. I've added bugreport with patch to gnome bugzilla: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=644505. [Bug 796376] Re: spell check language duplicates in Firefox
Is there any chance to have this bug fixed? This actually does look really ugly having language duplicates.
