[Bug 221038] Re: PulseAudio fails when Gstreamer is paused

2008-07-01 Thread Alex
After living with the problem for a while, I have come back with some
more information. I have two computers, a Dell Dimension 8400 (which is
what I've submitted the initial information above with) and a Dell
Inspiron 600m. I've had the same problem on my Inspiron, but after I
followed "Part A" of the instructions at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578, the problem never
happened again. I've been using pavucontrol without any crashing issues!

[Bug 245085] [NEW] rgmanager wrongly depends on NFS server

2008-07-02 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Hi,

On current Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, rgmanager depends on nfs-kernel-server and
nfs-common. If you are not going to setup a clusterized NFS server, this
is a useless dependency and it pulls in a lot of packages (like portmap
and other rpc.* packages) which are insecure and must be manually
disabled for security-sensitive deployments.

It would be nice if these dependencies were removed or downgraded to
Suggest: dependencies.

Regards,
Alex

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the "numlock" key

2008-07-27 Thread alex
I'm running ibex alpha 3 and the numlock works as I expect.

The only problem I'm having with the keyboard now is the F keys.

In order for me to open the run command I have to press ALT + fn + F2.

I would expect the fn key to enable the extra functions on the keys
rather than enable the F-Keys.

Is there anything in the works to change the way this work or am I going
to be stuck with this?

[Bug 221329] Re: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 live CD (and install) hangs during boot

2008-08-25 Thread Alex
I have also been encountering problems trying to install xubuntu (hardy
heron) on a Sony K215Z. The installation process would hang shortly
after the graphical environment came up.

After reading https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-
ati/+bug/220345 and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4963984&postcount=24 I tried
adding the following kernel options

nohz=off
highres=off

This got me through the installation.

I will report back on overall system stability.

Yes, this seems to be fixing the issue for me (Fedora 9, GM965/GL960). IDEA 8.0

But it's weird, why this issue only appeared for the individual versions of

For instance IDEA 7.0.4 worked fined with EXA when IDEA 8.0 died.

[Bug 301426] [NEW] can't navigate DVD in totem-gstreamer

2008-11-23 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

I try to play DVD whith totem-gstreamer in Ubuntu 8.04. It start playing but no
menus or other navigation work. And I can't see DVD with this player. It can
play only intro video. Then I try to start from command line (totem-gstreamer
/media/cdrom0) but no effect.
I see the gstreamer is bad and have bugs. Better use xine. Totem-xine can play
DVD with menus. Best is using latest version of xine. In Hardy Heron repository
old version of xine (have bugs). In Intrepid Ibex repository more stable
version (I not found bugs yet).

[Bug 288650] Re: Intel Java Graphics Performace degradation in Intrepid

2008-11-27 Thread Alex
A few posts above I wrote that switching to XAA AccelMethod fixed the issue in
Fedora 9 (Intel video driver).
Today I upgraded to Fedora 10 and found out that XAA causes lots of graphical
glitches and makes Gnome not working.
So under F10 I've got to switch to EXA again and make a choice - working Gnome
OR working IDEA 8 :-

So, I'm staying at IDEA 7.0 which is working properly regardless the
AccelMethod and OS version.

skipping in all xine-based apps (amarok, kaffeine, etc.) and vlc. It
seems that this is a regression in a new alsa code:

[Bug 394024] [NEW] gweather-applet-2 stops updating

2009-06-30 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

gweather-applet-2 becomes unable to update (automatically or manually)
after a random, usually long period of normal behavior.

Switching to a different city (and then immediately back to my own)
under the Location tab in Weather Preferences makes the applet snap out
of it, so to speak; the forecast and current conditions are updated
instantly, and automatic updates proceed normally.

Considering the fiddly nature of my workaround, I'm hoping there's an
easy way to correct this minor bug. It's got to be one of the most
commonly used applets, and it's always been my favorite.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-27 Thread Alex
You may have had an issue with the contents of your
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state file. This determines the initial volume
levels of the various mixers when ALSA is initialized before Pulseaudio
starts.

Try this:

cp /var/lib/alsa/asound.state ~/asound.state.beforeboot
reboot
cp /var/lib/alsa/asound.state ~/asound.state.afterboot

diff ~/asound.state.afterboot ~/asound.state.beforeboot

If your sound goes from working to non-working (or visa-versa) between
the reboots then we would hope to see output from the diff command
above, indicating that the saved state of your ALSA mixer levels has
changed.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-31 Thread Alex
Hi Mark,

The following is from "man 5 modprobe.conf":

Because the modprobe command can add or remove extra more than one mod‐
ule, due to module dependencies, we need a method of specifying what
options are to be used with those modules. /etc/modprobe.conf (or, if
that does not exist, all files under the /etc/modprobe.d directory)
   specifies those options, as required.

So yes, all files under /etc/modprobe.d are treated as configuration
files.

In this case, lbm resolves the issues while compat-wireless does not.

Re: [Bug 362985] Re: MacBook Pro 3.1 Very Weak Wireless Performance Using Jaunty (Intrepid Works Fine)

2009-06-01 Thread Alex
Sorry, that could have been more clear.

My first instinct was to build compat-wireless (from linuxwireless.org) in
attempt to resolve the aforementioned problem. Unfortunately,
compat-wireless itself did not help at all, so I uninstalled it and then
installed lbm, which did indeed fix it.

[Bug 379316] [NEW] Ettercap can't initialize iptables table `nat': Permission denied (you must be root)

2009-05-22 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ettercap

When I uncomment this chain :

# if you use iptables:
   #redir_command_on = "iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i %iface -p tcp --dport
%port -j REDIRECT --to-port %rport"
   #redir_command_off = "iptables -t nat -D PREROUTING -i %iface -p tcp --dport
%port -j REDIRECT --to-port %rport"

Ettercap doesn't seem to work well.
I get this message

iptables v1.3.8: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Permission denied (you
must be root)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

I found a solution that works by changing ec_uid to equal 0 :

[privs]
ec_uid = 65534# nobody is the default
ec_gid = 65534# nobody is the default

Like this :

[privs]
ec_uid = 0# nobody is the default
ec_gid = 65534# nobody is the default

I use Ubuntu 9.04 and the ettercap package comes from the official
repository.

Thx

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-05-26 Thread Alex
Hi Mark,

Try the following:

1) Click the speaker icon on your Gnome panel and select the Volume Control
button
2) Under the Device dropdown select "HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)"
3) Click Preferences to bring up the Volume Control Preferences window
4) Make sure the following controls are enabled: Master, Headphone, PCM, Front,
PC Beep
5) Mute PC Beep (this will kill the horrible noise) and make sure that the rest
are not muted. Crank them up if necessary until you hear sound.

[Bug 362985] Re: MacBook Pro 3.1 Very Weak Wireless Performance Using Jaunty (Intrepid Works Fine)

2009-04-18 Thread Alex
Krzysztof,

Similar WiFi issues with my Jaunty MacBook Pro 3,1. Took several
attempts to connect to my WAP; was unable to reconnect after resuming
from Suspend; was able to reconnect after rebooting, but signal strength
was VERY poor.

Install the following packages:

linux-backports-modules-jaunty
wicd

This took care of all my wireless problems in Jaunty. Hope it works for
you, too!

[Bug 343677] Re: [Jaunty] Sound in GTK apps can't be disabled under KDE

2009-04-19 Thread Alex
Now, there are 4 days until the final release and this bug still haven't
been fixed! The Linux Desktop (in all distributions) is getting worser
and worser and after 9 years of Linux I'm thinking of switching over to
Windows :( I'm fed up with this kind of bugs that cost me time, the time
I would like to spend getting my work done and not tinkering around with
those kind of bugs!

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-04-21 Thread Alex
I also have a 1420n and was experiencing intermittent problems with
sound (it would work in about 1 out of every 5 boots). I am running
latest Jaunty as of around 2009-04-20 9:45am PST.

I found that the following fix: https://bugs.launchpad.net/alsa-
utils/+bug/315809/comments/7 to the file /usr/share/alsa/init/00main
results in sound working for 100% of cold boots. I am unable to get any
sound at all after a suspend/resume though.

I disagree. Palm only recently announced that it would be dropping
support for the PalmOS. There are a number of people what have PalmOS
devices, such as anyone who owns a Palm Trio cell phone or a Palm TX
handheld. I know of at least 200 (the nursing department at my
University), a few friends with Palm cell phones, and my Dad.

[Bug 370591] Re: Cups duplex mode doesn't work properly

2009-05-06 Thread Alex
Yes I do get double-sided sheets. But the printer prints first the third
page, then on the other side the second page. The sheet gets laid down
with side 2 on the top. Then page 1 gets printed and the sheet get laid
down with an empty page on the top.

I attached a document (in fact it happens with every document) from which I
wanted to print the first 3 pages.
As well I attached the error_log.

[Bug 373364] [NEW] npviewer.bin devours CPU

2009-05-07 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-installer

After a brief period of light web surfing in Firefox, CPU often gets
very hot; fans spin like mad. When this occurs, npviewer.bin is
consistently found to be eating up around 50% of my processing power
(see screenshot, attached). It lingers even after Firefox has been
closed.

Manually ending process npviewer.bin quickly fixes this, but the problem
inevitably returns.

I think I got this one too.

After the most recent upgrade (firefox-3.0 3.0.10+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1)

Micah,

Thanks for information, but if the package you are talking about is firefox
3.0.10 then i've upgraded some hours ago. I might add that, i did install
acrobat reader 9.1, and i think that was what was causing trouble among
other things, but i removed it and things were fine. Again thanks for
talking trouble to reply to me.

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-04-21 Thread Alex
Sorry for all the updates, I'm figuring this out as I go along.

After my previous update I noticed that the alsa-info.txt lists two
different model= options being passed to the snd-hda-intel module,
model=laptop and model=3stack. The model=laptop option was being passed
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf and the model=3stack was being set in
/etc/modprobe.d/lanai-sound .

I commented out the model=3stack line so that I was only passing
model=laptop and my sound worked on the next reboot. I also tested a
suspend and resume and sound has continued to work.

So, I'm back to suggesting the patch to /usr/share/alsa/init/00main
which I mentioned in #18.

[Bug 289918] Re: Regression: Connecting to FreeNX breaks keyboard layout in Intrepid

2008-11-05 Thread Alex
I found that setting my keyboard on the client to Generic->102 key
(Intl) fixed it for me. I'm running Kubuntu but I installed gnome
specifically to address this issue (The KDE system config stuff is
crap). Switching back to KDE, it also seemed OK. NB: I am using KDM as
my DM.

Using evdev from the gnome configuration settings, oddly, did not stick
for a gnome environment but did for kde (every time I decided to click
to apply the changes system-wide).

[Bug 289215] [NEW] Image corruption with Human window boarder and compiz

2008-10-25 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-theme

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

human-theme version 0.28.5

I expected the window boarder to exhibit its normal behavior when
windows are focused and unfocused when using desktop effects.

Instead, the window boarder image is corrupted under certain window
actions, such as when a window closes and another window comes into

[Bug 198871] Re: Jmicron AHCI controller probs...

2008-11-02 Thread Alex
Similar bug on my PC.

HW:
-Asus P5K Motherboard with Intel P35 chipset (ICH9) and onboard JMicron SATA
controller.
-Seagate Barracuda (SATA, 250GB), originally plugged to the JMICRON SATA.
-Optiarc DVD-ROM (SATA)
(-Seagate Barracuda (SATA, 160), but was unplugged all the time)

SW:
-Latest BIOS (can check the version num. if needed)
-ICH9 is set to IDE (no other options), JMicron is set to Enabled, AHCI
-Ubuntu 8.10 (downloaded a standart CD the second day it was released)

Prob:
I booted to LiveCD and started the installation. When the installation process
gets to file copying, i get a #5 IO error (Can't copy files to HDD)

Then I plugged the HDD to ICH9 SATA port, and set JMICRON to Enabled, IDE.
The installation was smooth (although the partition wizard was working very
slowly both this time and the previous try).
After rebooting, I booted Ubuntu as usual, but I got an error message, that it
can't login as root.
The only thing availible was busybox. Then it gets stuck at initramfs with
"ata2: COMRESET failed" error. Booting in safemode didn't make any difference.

My solution:
I connected the HDD back to JMicron controller and switched it to AHCI mode.
After that it worked just fine. I tried switching JMicron to IDE, but it still
works.

[Bug 250292] [NEW] firefox cannot reach the login screen of www.ppshk.com

2008-07-20 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Even after I have installed the relevant packages of JAVA JRE and web browser
plugin (IcedTea), I still cannot reach sites which require to run some Java
applets. For example, to get into the www.ppshk.com login screen, Firefox
3.0.1 under Ubuntu 8.04 (64bits) will stop at the point when the system
indicated "Starting Applet" and "Applet Started". The login screen never show
up.
In another occasion going to the www.bankcomm.com.hk and chose the stock
trading option on the top left, it will show the login boxes. However, when
you enter something into the box, the site give off a message referring to the
case when something has not activated the JAVA option in IE, even though I have
checked that all the JAVA options have been chosen.

I have removed and re-add icedtea. But still having the problem. I tried

[Bug 277623] [NEW] [intrepid] touch pad speed reset when return from suspend

2008-10-03 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

Using the beta release of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10. When I boot the
computer, my touchpad speed that I initially set works fine. However,
when I suspend the laptop, and then resume, the touchpad speed is set
back to default (really slow). Restarting X with ctrl+alt+backspace
fixes the problem.

The touchpad speed upon resuming from suspend should be consistent with
what it is when the system is cold booted. Configurations should not be
lost when the system resumes from suspend.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-14 Thread Alex
If Mozilla wants an EULA, let them have it. Firefox is a great browser,
is open source, and is perfectly compatible with Windows. That to me is
more valuable than having an EULA appear that no one reads and everyone
agrees to anyway.

If this turns out to be a real problem to everyone, check out what
Epiphany is doing with Webkit. Very cool.

[Bug 188669] Re: [needs-packaging] kde4 konqueror plugins

2008-06-29 Thread Alex
I guess I'm a bit confused as to why out of everything, they forget

the mean time to get version 4.0.3 of konqueror to recognize the flash
plugin I have installed? The browser is actually magnificent in my
eyes, but missing that one critical part. THe search bar isn't a issue

adobe flash.. Anyone know of an inticipated time frame for this plugin

[Bug 236264] Re: Evolution asks my pasword to unlock the default keyring since last update

2008-06-18 Thread alex
This still is a bug for those users with automatic logon. Someone
logging on automatically is not generally going to want to enter a
password to get to their email. At least, if they do they should have
to switch it on.

My wife doesn't even know the password (my choice to reduce the risk of
inappropriate admin activity without having 2 accounts) but uses
Evolution for her email. You can image the hassle this is causing me,
and de-encrypting all my other keyring passwords is hardly a recommended
security procedure...

Please just let auto-login users auto-login to Evolution, unless they
really want to do it differently.

[Bug 218788] Re: nautilus refuses to mount a partition after manually setting new mount point

2008-06-20 Thread Alex
I just figured out why it does this today. You are supposed to enter the
name of the folder you want the drive to be mounted in under /media, not
the entire directory path itself. For example, if I want my thumb drive
to have the mount point /media/thumb, I enter just "thumb" in the mount
point field.

The error message is telling you that you can't have forward slashes in
the mount name, but I agree, it is very cryptic.
