[Bug 149764] Re: [nvidia] slow gtk popup menus with gtk dual head

2008-07-02 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
FYI, I do the workaround a little differently now than what's described
here. Instead of having a session start-up script, I renamed
/usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/compiz.shipped and then put the workaround
script in place of /usr/bin/compiz. So my /usr/bin/compiz looks like
this:

#!/bin/bash
# start compiz
DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz.shipped --only-current-screen $* &
disown $!
sleep 3
DISPLAY=:0.1 compiz.shipped --only-current-screen $* &
disown $!

You can then enable and disable compiz normally in System -> Preferences
-> Appearance -> Visual Effects and it should all just work. You'll need
to repeat every time they update compiz though.

I too would like some sort of update on this.

[Bug 252035] [NEW] Sometimes System -> Quit -> Log Out must be done twice for anything to happen

2008-07-25 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Hardy 32-bit.
Sometimes when I try to log out via System -> Quit -> Log Out, nothing
happens. i.e., the Quit menu closes but I stay logged-in and everything
is still running, as if I had just canceled. When I do System -> Quit ->
Log Out a second time, it then works.

This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens fairly often (at least,
relative to how often I log out, which is not a whole lot). Note though
that I have never needed to try to log out a third time. It always works
by the second time. And it might be that it happens with the other
actions in the quit menu too, but I do those even less so I can't really
say.

[Bug 150719] Re: switchuser applet doesn't reuse font color from custom panel style

2008-07-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I can confirm this bug. Note that it is not just a problem with custom
.gtkrc files, it occurs with regular themes too. For example, if you
install the Murrina-LiNsta theme you'll see the problem.

>From the upstream report, a workaround is to put the following in your
.gtkrc:

widget "*fast-user-switch-applet*" style "panel"

where "panel" is whatever style is being appled to PanelApplet widgets.

I can confirm that that works.

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound becuse of pulseaudio hang

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Steve, I think you might be right about this being Flash's fault.
Thinking back, I think maybe the problem has only happened to me when I
left Hulu open. And Flash's ALSA sound support is known to be buggy, so
that would make sense. But unfortunately Pulse output is the default
ALSA plugin for ALL users now, so we can't confirm this just by asking
the people here if they each have that turned on.

Maybe another thing to find out is what Flash version we're all using?
The bug might only affect certain versions. I'm using 10.0.1.218,
installed via the flashplugin-nonfreebeta package.

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound becuse of pulseaudio hang

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Yes, pulseaudio is definitely at fault, but it may be brought on by
Flash. I recall that the issue is that Flash leaks ALSA handles or
something, which might contribute to resource exhaustion in Pulse, and
the error messages seems suggestive of that.

[Bug 306088] [NEW] Flash exits full screen moments after entering it

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Whenever I enter full screen mode in any Flash app, the full screen view
only stays up for about a second. After that it automatically exits full
screen mode. The full screen view appears to work fine for the one
second that it stays up (e.g., the video continues to update properly),
but it always exits full screen mode right after. I have tested Firefox
and Epiphany and the bug occurs in both.

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid 32-bit on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with an
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS and Compiz enabled. I have dual monitors in
the "Separate X Screen" configuration. Their resolutions are 1920x1200
and 1920x1080. The bug happens on both monitors. I have not customized
or altered the configuration of Flash in any way (e.g., no -extrasound
package, no .asoundrc, etc.).

[Bug 380817] [NEW] [Jaunty][regression] TwinView with different vertical resolutions cuts off bottom of larger screen

2009-05-26 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-180

I am running 32-bit Jaunty on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with an NVIDIA
GeForge Go 7900 GS. Compiz is ON. I have two screens with different
vertical resolutions (1920x1200 and 1920x1080). When I enable NVIDIA
TwinView, the extra space at the bottom of the larger screen is cut off
and shows black.

THIS IS A REGRESSION. In previous versions of Ubuntu, the whole screen
was usable.

Some additional notes:

- Nothing but black ever displays in the extra section, except the cursor,
which shows up normally.
- Maximized windows fill the _usable_ space (i.e., they do NOT extend into the
black section).
- Right-clicking in the black section _does_ bring up a context menu, but only
the part that is above the black section is visible.

[Bug 317353] Re: Evolution: "Unknown Mailbox" and "UID not allowed now" when using IMAP

2009-03-09 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I finally got the info you asked for. (I kept forgetting to run with the
debug settings after reboots so I kept missing the bug.) The file is a
massive 1.1 GB though so I only uploaded the last 6000 lines. I'll keep
the whole thing around though so let me know if you need to see more of
it.

[Bug 295435] [NEW] [Intrepid] pulseaudio periodically gets into a state where it does not play any sound and must be kill -9'ed and restarted

2008-11-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Ever since upgrading to Intrepid from Hardy, the pulseaudio daemon
periodically gets into a state where it does not play any sound. Some
apps will actually freeze if I attempt to play sound in them (e.g.,
Rhythmbox) while others work normally but with no sound (e.g., Flash in
Firefox using aoss and the pulse plugin via the .asoundrc). Trying to
kill pulseaudio with -15 has no effect; instead you must use -9. After
restarting it, newly opened applications will play sound just fine,
until the problem occurs again. It happens about once per day for me,
and so far it always seems to be when I'm not home, so perhaps the
problem only occurs when sound is not in use? Or maybe there is some
sort of gradual leak? I usually have Hulu, SMPlayer, and Rhythmbox open
24/7.

After it happened today I checked the syslog for things relating to
pulseaudio and found only the following:

Nov 7 17:16:54 tinygod3 pulseaudio[30771]: protocol-native.c: Failed to push
data into queue

[Bug 243442] [NEW] dot/kprof runs forever consuming all available memory

2008-06-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: graphviz

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Hardy. I tried
to use dot from graphviz to visualize a graph produced by kprof for a
program of mine, but I have found that it is unable to handle this
particular graph file properly. The problem behaves differently with
different output plugins. SVG works fine, but all other output types
that I have tried have either caused dot to run forever and rapidly
consume all available memory (jpg, gif) or have produced files that
cause that in whatever program I try to view them with (ps, png). I have
2 GB of RAM, and yet this bug chews through it in a matter of seconds.

The offending dot file is attached.

+1

This would be extremely useful for debugging. I don't think there's any
need for a new tool though, the dbgsym packages can just Recommend: all
the other ones, or even require them. Or alternatively we could leave
them alone and have new meta-packages that require the transitive
dbgsyms, e.g. "gnome-foo-dbgsym-all".

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop running pure up-to-date Ubuntu Hardy
32-bit. When libflashsupport is installed, viewing videos on YouTube
frequently crashes Firefox just as the video is loading. Navigating from
one video to another via the list on the right will very quickly repro
this bug. When libflashsupport is NOT installed this bug does NOT occur.
The crash is a segmentation fault, but for some reason there is no crash
file for me in /var/crash and apport does not get triggered. Instead I
am attaching the output from a gdb session, which contains a full
backtrace.

This is probably the same as bugs 207228, 238838, and more, but I see
from the comments on those that we're not supposed to confirm other
people's crash bugs.

[Bug 194638] Re: Compiz gets into a state where going fullscreen in apps causes an X11 BadAlloc error

2008-06-22 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Happened again today, except this time the bug occurred whenever the
video WASN'T in fullscreen mode. I got backtraces for both Totem and
MPlayer; they are attached. They don't really say much though, basically
just that the program gave a frame to the X server and got back this
error.

At the time the bug happened, I was only using 75% RAM and 5% of SWAP.
After getting the backtraces, I noticed that I had about a dozen
instances of SMPlayer open (probably due to a stuck shortcut key that
opened too many). After closing them, the bug went away, even though my
RAM usage had barely changed (75% -> 72%). Then I tried opening a dozen
instances of SMPlayer again (-> 78% RAM usage) and the bug came back.

Perhaps the problem is that X and/or Compiz reserves video memory for
each app that might need it, even when they haven't asked for it? But
that the memory for fullscreen mode is shared? Though that wouldn't
explain the original situation where the bug happens in fullscreen mode
...

experience the bug.

[Bug 234666] [NEW] Launching app using AllTray from command-line does not start it hidden

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alltray

I am running pure up-to-date Hardy x86 on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. When
I launch apps using AllTray from the command-line--e.g. as follows:

$ alltray evolution

then the app starts up with the window shown, instead of hidden as it is
supposed to be. (You are supposed to have to specify --show to make it
show immediately.)

Clicking on the tray icon to hide it afterwards _does_ work, as does all
other functionality that I have tested.

Also, I have desktop effects enabled.

[Bug 232375] Re: weather not shown in world-clock-applet when computer timezone differs from home location timezone

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Confirmed. I live in Seattle and had my computer's timezone set to
America/Vancouver, but the gnome clock applet uses America/Los Angeles
for the timezone of the Seattle location, so they didn't match and it
never showed the weather in the system tray. Only once I changed the
timezones to match did the weather show up properly. (Note that the
pull-down window with the calendar and world map _does_ show the weather
regardless, it just doesn't show up in the system tray.)

Perhaps the author did this deliberately so that only the user's home
location's weather would show up in the system tray (i.e., instead of
the weather for each location)? I think the right solution though is to
have a check box for each location that says "show the weather for this
location in the system tray". Or instead just always show the weather
for the first location in the list.

I have attached a screenshot showing the two places where the timezone
must match.

issue is that the timezone of your location and the timezone of your

[Bug 223418] Re: System tray loads with all non-applet icons "popped out" into windows

2008-05-24 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
ilpillo:

I deleted .gconf/apps/panel and at first the problem went away, but when
I added back all of my applets the problem came back. This seems to
reinforce the hypothesis that the problem is due to load time. The
applets I'm currently using are:

Quit...
Clock
Volume Control
User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator
Search for Files...
Timer
Deskbar
Tomboy Notes

Tomboy in particular takes ages to load, so it might be why this happens
so often for me, but it has happened even without Tomboy. I have seen it
happen with just the following set:

Quit...
Clock
Volume Control
User Switcher
Keyboard Indicator
Timer

[Bug 232375] Re: weather not shown in world-clock-applet when computer timezone differs from home location timezone

2008-05-25 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
The main problem is that the user can end up with no weather showing in
the system tray, but with no indication of why. I was saying above that
you should be able to set a location to be your home location without
having to change your computer's timezone to match. (i.e., don't make it
depend on tzdata at all.)

Alternatively, an even simpler change would be to take the "Set" button
that appears in the pull-down menu (the one that sets that to be your
home location and changes the timezone) and put it in Preferences ->
Locations too, together with the Home icon. That way it becomes much
clearer why there's no weather in the system tray. (I've attached a
mock-up of this.) Deeta and others in a similar situation could still
use the stand-alone Weather Report applet, which doesn't require your
timezone to match.

The tooltip for the "Set" button should also be changed to "Set this as
my home location". Currently it is "Set as current timezone for this
computer", which is missing part of the picture.

2008-05-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I am continuing to see this even after the fix for bug 186382, but I
have only ever noticed it with Eclipse. (I'm using 3.3.1.1 Classic,
installed directly from www.eclipse.org.) Note that I am seeing it
simply on focus change as described in my dupe. Attached is a screenshot
taken just now. When the title bar messes up, it is always more or less
the same pink colour. Here's the proof of kernel update:

$ uname -r

[Bug 237819] [NEW] Transfer of focus to Find/Replace dialog in Eclipse is considered focus stealing by Compiz

2008-06-05 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

In Eclipse, the Find/Replace dialog automatically gains focus when it is
opened, or when you press Ctrl+F while it is already open. However,
Compiz considers this latter case to be focus stealing (even when focus
stealing prevention is set to "Low"), despite the fact that both windows
are part of the same app and the transfer is in response to a user
action.

Repro steps:

1) Enable Compiz, then install compizconfig-settings-manager and enable focus
stealing prevention in System -> Preferences -> Advanced
Desktop Effects Settings -> General Options -> Focus & Raise Behaviour.
2) Install Eclipse, open it, and open an editor window.
3) Press Ctrl+F to show the Find/Replace dialog.
=> The dialog gets focus, as expected.
4) Click on the editor to transfer focus back to it.
5) Press Ctrl+F again with the Find/Replace dialog already open.
=> Although the "Find:" text field gets focus, the actual Find/Replace window
does not, so that if you try to type then the keypresses go nowhere.

Expected: When Ctrl+F is pressed, the Find/Replace window should always
get focus (except perhaps when using very strong focus stealing
prevention)

I don't know whose bug this is, so I'm opening it against both the
Eclipse and Compiz packages. I know you could argue that this is how
focus stealing prevention is supposed to work, but it is definitely a
bug to consider this focus stealing on the "Low" setting when it is so
obviously not focus stealing.

Also opened with Eclipse upstream at
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=235965.

Note that I have actually installed Eclipse directly from eclipse.org
(Version: 3.3.1.1, Build id: M20071023-1652), not the Ubuntu repos, but
I'm assuming that this would affect Ubuntu's package too.

[Bug 238775] [NEW] Firefox randomly and silently exits

definitely irregular termination. The bug occurs about once every few

[Bug 317353] [NEW] Evolution: "Unknown Mailbox" and "UID not allowed now" when using IMAP

2009-01-14 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid 32-bit, but I've had this bug for a long
time. Every now and then, after downloading some new message headers
from my Gmail account (using IMAP), Evolution gets into a state where it
can't download anything new after that. If I then attempt to open one of
the new messages that I got headers for, I get the error:

Unable to retrieve message
IMAP command failed: Unknown Mailbox: INBOX (Failure)

If I try again (by going to an old, cached message and then going back),
I get a different error:

Unable to retrieve message

Images of the errors are attached. Retrying again continues to give the
second error from then on. The problem clears once I exit Evolution and

clearly explains the condition in which the bug occurs.

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound becuse of pulseaudio hang

2008-12-10 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have two sound devices. One is an Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller. The other is an external USB device:
Creative Technology, Ltd SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit External SB0490. I
have snd_hda_intel and snd_usb_audio loaded, so that's probably their
drivers.

Seems unlikely to me. The description is very different.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-06-11 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
harold:

I also get that after every reboot. I'm in Seattle, US, but it says I'm
somewhere in either Africa or Asia--don't remember which. However, that
never causes me any problems. The weather information still shows up and
the timezone of my system is still correct. Have you made sure to set
the _computer_'s timezone to Europe/Amsterdam too? (See the screenshots
in the bug that I attached above.)

2008-06-12 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
This bug is not a crash, it is just an error that makes the program
exit. How can you get a backtrace for that?
