and won't be able to try to build a package until I get back (problem
affects only my computer at home).

[Bug 298619] [NEW] please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture

2008-11-16 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

I just installed Intrepid on my Core 2 Quad system.

Core 2 has AMD64 support (or EM64T as Intel calls it).

As a developer of software, I'm interested in being able to build my
programs in 64bit to check for portability. For this reason, I tried
out the 64bit Intrepid. There were a lot of issues and headaches with
that, so I decided to go back to 32bit.

I still wanted to be able to build and run 64bit binaries though, so I
had the idea of installing the appropriate libc/gcc packages for amd64
(which exist) and then installing the appropriate kernel image (which
does not exist).

I was able to download linux-
image-2.6.27-8-generic_2.6.27-8.17_amd64.deb from the mirror and install
it using dpkg --force-architecture. I booted, and everything is
copacetic. Even the initramfs was generated properly (with what I
assume is a mix of 32bit userspace utilities and 64bit kernel modules).
I don't have any hardware that requires restricted modules, so I didn't
need to worry about that — if I did, perhaps things wouldn't be so happy
right now.

I've heard that there are some specific issues with running a system
like this (for example, that the usbfs interface doesn't have the
correct 64/32bit thunks in place) but I've yet to encounter a single
issue. Certainly it's working well enough to be useful.

It's worth it to provide an official package for this, I think.

[Bug 298619] Re: please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture

2008-11-16 Thread Ryan Lortie
Two things worth noting (for sake of documentation):

1) Currently amd64 is at -8 but i386 is at -7. This means that (by
luck) there is no problem putting the amd64 kernel on my i386 system.
Of course, this is probably not usually the case.

2) One problem with this: autoconf looks at uname -m and guesses that my
build (and therefore host) system is x86_64. This results in "the wrong
thing" happening in a lot of cases, unless I override it with
--build=i686-unknown-linux-gnu. I suspect this to be an autoconf issue.

Without specifying "spacing=0" I get the expected output (or at least an
acceptable one: "Nimbus regular", although I would prefer one of the fonts I
explicitly installed from liberation or the courier from msttcorefonts).

So why do I care about "spacing=0"? This is what poppler requests when
you open the attached PDF file using evince. The PDF includes no font
information since "Courier" is one of the PDF base fonts. fontconfig
gives evince the bold/oblique font which results in incorrect output.

[Bug 242383] [NEW] default postfix config creates backscatter

2008-06-23 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

The postfix config file has a 'mydestination' parameter. This is the
domains for which your mailserver will deliver mail locally.

It also has a 'relay_domains' parameter. This is the domains for which
your mailserver will accept mail for delivery from remote untrusted
hosts. As a matter of course, your 'mydestination' should be included
here since you want to be able to receive mail for yourself as a
precondition for delivering it.

To this end, very sanely, the default setting is:

relay_domains = $mydestination

Unfortunately, there is another configuration parameter
'parent_domain_matches_subdomains'. This parameter is very evil. It lists the
names of *other* configuration parameters for which 'domain.com' should be
interpreted as '*.domain.com'.

It includes 'relay_domains' in its default list.

So for example:

mydestination = domain.com

then, by default, relay_domains will also equal domain.com.

*but* relay_domains is _interpreted_ as being *.domain.com.

This means that if someone attempts to send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
existent-sub.domain.com your server will

(1) accept it
(2) attempt to relay it, but notice the subdomain doesn't exist
(3) generate backscatter

The default setup for the mailserver should clearly be that it refuses
to accept mail not destined for it from untrusted hosts.

The fix for this is to add 'parent_domain_matches_subdomains =' (ie: set
it to empty).

Even the postfix documentation says this feature will be disabled soon:

This is planned backwards compatibility: eventually,
all Postfix features are expected to require explicit
".domain.tld" style patterns when you really want to
  match subdomains.

[Bug 242383] Re: default postfix config creates backscatter

[Bug 242383] Re: default postfix config creates backscatter

2008-06-23 Thread Ryan Lortie
Two more potential (somewhat less good) solutions:

1: You can set
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, reject_unauth_destination,
reject_unknown_recipient_domain

then your host will accept mail for existent-sub.domain.com but not non-
existent-sub.domain.com (this is done by the
reject_unknown_recipient_domain). Unfortunately, this will accept mail
for any hostname that has an A record, regardless of if an MX is running
there or not.

2: You can use the techniques described here:
http://www.postfix.org/ADDRESS_VERIFICATION_README.html

Unfortunately this uses a lot of resources and might get you blacklisted
by more aggressive mail providers (or rather, mail providers that don't
appreciate your particular variety of aggressiveness).

[Bug 325701] Re: gvfsd-trash crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_cond_wait@@GLIBC_2.3.2()

2009-02-17 Thread Ryan Lortie
Hi Bogdan

If you can remember: how long had you been logged in when the crash
occurred?

Although this is flagged as being a crasher in version 1.1.5, I am
suspicious of the accuracy of that information. Séb packaged 1.1.5 on
the 2nd and this bug is reported on the 5th. Even if you are very good
about doing updates, I guess it wouldn't be until the 3rd or 4th until
you had 1.1.5 on your machine. If you had been logged in from before
that time then you would have actually been running 1.1.4 (or earlier).

1.1.4 had a known heap corruption bug in it that was fixed in 1.1.5. If
you were really running 1.1.5 then this is another bug still unsolved.
If you were using 1.1.4 or earlier, though, then I'd like to close this
bug as it is very likely already fixed.

[Bug 54619] ether_sprintf is in both wlan and new_wlan

2006-08-01 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

The symbol ether_sprintf is in both wlan and new_wlan.

The madwifi NG driver needs this symbol, among others. Therefore
loading madwifi NG goes something like this:

-2) whatever generates the symbols list indicates that ether_sprintf is
provided by 'wlan'.
-1) depmod decides that because madwifi-ng needs ether_sprintf that it depends
on wlan.
0) madwifi needs a bunch of new_... symbols so it also depends on new_wlan.

1) madwifi-ng gets modprobed
2) modprobe loads wlan because it needs sprintf_ether and doesn't realise that
new_wlan could provide this too
3) modprobe tries to load new_wlan to get other symbols, but this won't work
since the ether_sprintf symbol is already in the kernel.
4) now we can't have madwifi-ng anymore.

workaround is to manually unload 'wlan' and manually load 'new_wlan' before
proceeding to modprobe new_ath_pci.

[Bug 54445] Re: [edgy] Gaim crashes when I click on "save icon"

2006-08-02 Thread Ryan Lortie
This is probably the same as the muine crasher.

Essentially:

dbus locking has two states: initialised and not

If it's not initialised then the function to allocate a lock returns a
bogus value (0xabcdef) and the lock and unlock functions are no-ops.

If it's initialised then the new function returns real values and the
lock and unlock functions actually use those values.

The problem is the following sequence:

1) Allocate a lock (get pointer 0xabcdef).
2) Initialise locking
3) Use your lock from (1)

Because you're using the real locking function with the bogus (0xabcdef)
pointer, you get a crash.

A workaround is to make sure that locking is initialised very early in
your application. This can be done with dbus_g_thread_init or even by
simply doing GnomeVFS initialisation early (since this does the thread
init for you).

[Bug 54621] Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

2006-08-02 Thread Ryan Lortie
Ok. The problem goes something like this:

This function is called to decide if the timer IRQ is "working".

static int __init timer_irq_works(void)
{
unsigned long t1 = jiffies;

local_irq_enable();
/* Let ten ticks pass... */
mdelay((10 * 1000) / HZ);

/*
 * Expect a few ticks at least, to be sure some possible
 * glue logic does not lock up after one or two first
 * ticks in a non-ExtINT mode. Also the local APIC
 * might have cached one ExtINT interrupt. Finally, at
 * least one tick may be lost due to delays.
 */
if (jiffies - t1 > 4 && jiffies - t1 < 16)
return 1;

return 0;
}

Note the use of mdelay(). Since we're testing the advancement of
jiffies we can't use a jiffy-based timer. mdelay delays with a busy
loop that runs a certain number of iterations based on the BogoMIPS
rating of your machine.

The problem is that BogoMIPs are detected somewhat randomly on my
laptop.

The "calibrating delay..." message always gets a value of about 3994.7
give or take a couple tenths. The message that comes later gets wildly
different values on different boots.

[17179570.588000] Total of 2 processors activated (6485.23 BogoMIPS).

Depending on the BogoMIPS detected, the delay loop runs in much more or
much less time and therefore too few or too many IRQs are detected while
attempting to determine if the timer IRQ is connected, causing the test
to fail.

2006-08-17 Thread Ryan Lortie
*and* Launchpad ate this comment. How lucky can one man be?:

This is not the correct fix for the problem.

Disabling the old madwifi generation does not fix the symbol conflict
since it only prevents the hal module from being generated and the
symbol conflict exists in a separate module.

Also, it is intended that the device list of the madwifi-ng is crippled
so that users get the old madwifi by default if it supports their card.
This has already received a lot of discussion and complaint.

The none cipher is only used if the client explicitly requests it.
Furthermore, the admin has the option of disabling it entirely via the
'Ciphers' parameter of the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. The shipped
sshd_config file could even disable it as per default.

With the ability to have this option configurable via a config file it
seems a bit heavy-fisted to disable it at compile-time.

Doing password authentication over 'none' cipher is indeed quite bad
(unless you're on a trusted local network) but RSA/DSA authentication
over an unencrypted transport is totally secure in that no key
information is leaked and it's not possible to authenticate without a
proper key.

Of course, you are more open to session hijacking, but that sort of goes
without saying.

[Bug 58492] Re: Openoffice.org crashes on "Save"

2006-09-07 Thread Ryan Lortie
the problem is that openoffice is linked against libdbus-1-2 and the
glib bindings are linked against libdbus-1-3.

because of the flat elf namespace, however the calls from the glib
bindings land up being serviced by the functions of the same name in
libdbus-1-2

2006-09-07 Thread Ryan Lortie
from looking at the openoffice.org source package it looks like this
problem will be solved if someone just kicks off a new build of
openoffice.org

openoffice links against dbus but isn't too picky about the version it
gets and it uses ${shlibs:Depends} to decide what version of the package
it depends on. if rebuilt today it should automatically depend on the
new dbus library version and everything should be ok.

[Bug 61186] system-tools-backends abuses the timers in a big way

2006-09-18 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

20 wakeups per second from the system-tools-backends perl script.

caused by this line in /usr/share/system-tools-
backends-2.0/scripts/SystemToolsBackends.pl

Net::DBus::Reactor->main->add_timeout (50, Net::DBus::Callback->new(method =>
\&Utils::Monitor::do_monitor_files));

every 50 milliseconds. crikey!

since ubuntu doesn't even have Sys::Gamin, this results in a call to a
handler that returns immediately (so it's entirely useless).

a fix for this problem is to comment that line out.

2006-09-18 Thread Ryan Lortie
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 53985 ***

The problem is caused by SMIs being thrown while the kernel is trying to
calibrate the delay loop.

This is ICH7. If I save the value of the SMI register then disable
SMI_EN before running the calibration then it succeeds.

You have to restore the value of the SMI register after you're done
calibrating. There are a few bits in that register like "Enables legacy
USB circuit to cause SMI#." that cause USB problems later on if not
reenabled (really really slow device detection and keyboard is laggy and
each letter you type appears twice).

bit 3 of SMI_EN:

LEGACY_USB_EN — R/W.

temporarily disabling this single bit allows the delay loop calibration

[Bug 65621] DeskJet 3740 (and probably many others) should print in reverse

2006-10-12 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip-ppds

i got a deskjet 3740 for super-cheap at staples. it works great with
ubuntu except for two problems.

the problem for this bug is that when paper comes out of my printer it
comes out with the printed side facing up. the paper then drops onto
the tray.

this means that if pages come out of my printer 1 2 3 4 they will go
onto the tray in order 1 2 3 4. when i pick them up, page 4 is on top.

there is an option in PPD files specifically designed to deal with this.
this option is documented in the CUPS FAQ here:

It says:

1.7 How do I print pages always in reverse order?

[Bug 65622] printing outside of the margins causes the job to stall in the queue

2006-10-12 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip-ppds

ii got a deskjet 3740 for super-cheap at staples. it works great with
ubuntu except for two problems.

the problem for this bug is that if i print outside of the hard margins
of the printer (ie: physical limitations) then the job just stalls in
the print queue. no error, no nothing. the job just sits there
forever.

if i erase the job and send another job that's inside the margins then
everything is fine again.

i'm using the hplip-ppds driver (HP-DeskJet_3740-hpijs.ppd) for the

[Bug 145430] please build and blacklist new firewire drivers for gutsy

ubuntu currently only has the old one enabled. the new one is smaller
and faster and i guess it will probably eventually become the default.

for now it seems reasonable to build the new driver as a module. in
order to make the change zero-risk the new ohci module should probably
be blacklisted so that it doesn't get auto-loaded.

[Bug 146468] windows flicker on click to switch

2007-09-28 Thread Ryan Lortie
Public bug reported:

i just installed the gutsy beta on my 1st generation macbook

these machines have intel graphics (945gm)

i'm running a more or less stock install. i think this means that i
have the modesetting driver installed.

when i click the mouse to switch between overlapping windows there is
flickering.

basically, say you have two normal windows A and B with B currently
overlapping A.

you click on A to switch to it. near as i can tell, this is the very
quick sequence of events:

  - A raises over top of B
  - A disappears completely
- on the overlap parts you briefly see B again
- on the non-overlap parts you briefly see the background image
  - A reappears

this all happens very quickly -- maybe over the course of a quarter of a
second. it's definitely long enough to always be perceptable, though.
it happens 100% of the time.

[Bug 146468] Re: windows flicker on click to switch

2007-09-28 Thread Ryan Lortie
some more information: i tried this with the live cd. i can reproduce
by doing the following:

  - boot gutsy beta live cd in my macbook
  - open two terminal windows
  - switch between them.

the flickering occurs when switching by mouse click or by using the
taskbar. alt+tab is perfectly smooth (probably the additional effects
here prevent the problem)

i might be wrong to reopen this bug, but i ask you to confirm your last
statement: is the ubuntu live cd really unsupported by ubuntu?

2007-09-28 Thread Ryan Lortie
disabling the "fading windows" plugin in ccsm fixes the problem.

upon reenabling it, the problem remains fixed.

travis thinks that this is a problem with the order in which the plugins
are loaded.

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly..

2008-04-28 Thread Ryan Lortie
While poking around the source to see what's going on, I discovered an
amazingly simple workaround for this problem (the numlock one, that is):

set pb_fnmode to 0. (via sysfs and in a modprobe options file)

This will disable that entire section of code causing the problem.

Cheers
