[Bug 298619] [NEW] please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture
Public bug reported: I just installed Intrepid on my Core 2 Quad system. Core 2 has AMD64 support (or EM64T as Intel calls it). As a developer of software, I'm interested in being able to build my programs in 64bit to check for portability. For this reason, I tried out the 64bit Intrepid. There were a lot of issues and headaches with that, so I decided to go back to 32bit. I still wanted to be able to build and run 64bit binaries though, so I had the idea of installing the appropriate libc/gcc packages for amd64 (which exist) and then installing the appropriate kernel image (which does not exist). I was able to download linux- image-2.6.27-8-generic_2.6.27-8.17_amd64.deb from the mirror and install it using dpkg --force-architecture. I booted, and everything is copacetic. Even the initramfs was generated properly (with what I assume is a mix of 32bit userspace utilities and 64bit kernel modules). I don't have any hardware that requires restricted modules, so I didn't need to worry about that — if I did, perhaps things wouldn't be so happy right now. I've heard that there are some specific issues with running a system like this (for example, that the usbfs interface doesn't have the correct 64/32bit thunks in place) but I've yet to encounter a single issue. Certainly it's working well enough to be useful. It's worth it to provide an official package for this, I think. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 298619] Re: please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture
Two things worth noting (for sake of documentation): 1) Currently amd64 is at -8 but i386 is at -7. This means that (by luck) there is no problem putting the amd64 kernel on my i386 system. Of course, this is probably not usually the case. 2) One problem with this: autoconf looks at uname -m and guesses that my build (and therefore host) system is x86_64. This results in "the wrong thing" happening in a lot of cases, unless I override it with --build=i686-unknown-linux-gnu. I suspect this to be an autoconf issue. -- please ship amd64 kernel for i386 architecture https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 242383] [NEW] default postfix config creates backscatter
Public bug reported: The postfix config file has a 'mydestination' parameter. This is the domains for which your mailserver will deliver mail locally. It also has a 'relay_domains' parameter. This is the domains for which your mailserver will accept mail for delivery from remote untrusted hosts. As a matter of course, your 'mydestination' should be included here since you want to be able to receive mail for yourself as a precondition for delivering it. To this end, very sanely, the default setting is: relay_domains = $mydestination Unfortunately, there is another configuration parameter 'parent_domain_matches_subdomains'. This parameter is very evil. It lists the names of *other* configuration parameters for which 'domain.com' should be interpreted as '*.domain.com'. It includes 'relay_domains' in its default list. So for example: mydestination = domain.com then, by default, relay_domains will also equal domain.com. *but* relay_domains is _interpreted_ as being *.domain.com. This means that if someone attempts to send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] existent-sub.domain.com your server will (1) accept it (2) attempt to relay it, but notice the subdomain doesn't exist (3) generate backscatter The default setup for the mailserver should clearly be that it refuses to accept mail not destined for it from untrusted hosts. The fix for this is to add 'parent_domain_matches_subdomains =' (ie: set it to empty). Even the postfix documentation says this feature will be disabled soon: This is planned backwards compatibility: eventually, all Postfix features are expected to require explicit ".domain.tld" style patterns when you really want to match subdomains. -- http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#parent_domain_matches_subdomains Cheers ** Affects: postfix (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- default postfix config creates backscatter https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242383 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 242383] Re: default postfix config creates backscatter
Two more potential (somewhat less good) solutions: 1: You can set smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, reject_unauth_destination, reject_unknown_recipient_domain then your host will accept mail for existent-sub.domain.com but not non- existent-sub.domain.com (this is done by the reject_unknown_recipient_domain). Unfortunately, this will accept mail for any hostname that has an A record, regardless of if an MX is running there or not. 2: You can use the techniques described here: http://www.postfix.org/ADDRESS_VERIFICATION_README.html Unfortunately this uses a lot of resources and might get you blacklisted by more aggressive mail providers (or rather, mail providers that don't appreciate your particular variety of aggressiveness). -- default postfix config creates backscatter https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242383 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Bogdan If you can remember: how long had you been logged in when the crash occurred? Although this is flagged as being a crasher in version 1.1.5, I am suspicious of the accuracy of that information. Séb packaged 1.1.5 on the 2nd and this bug is reported on the 5th. Even if you are very good about doing updates, I guess it wouldn't be until the 3rd or 4th until you had 1.1.5 on your machine. If you had been logged in from before that time then you would have actually been running 1.1.4 (or earlier). 1.1.4 had a known heap corruption bug in it that was fixed in 1.1.5. This is probably the same as the muine crasher. Essentially: dbus locking has two states: initialised and not If it's not initialised then the function to allocate a lock returns a bogus value (0xabcdef) and the lock and unlock functions are no-ops. If it's initialised then the new function returns real values and the lock and unlock functions actually use those values. The problem is the following sequence: 1) Allocate a lock (get pointer 0xabcdef). 2) Initialise locking 3) Use your lock from (1) Because you're using the real locking function with the bogus (0xabcdef) pointer, you get a crash. A workaround is to make sure that locking is initialised very early in your application. This can be done with dbus_g_thread_init or even by simply doing GnomeVFS initialisation early (since this does the thread init for you). -- [edgy] Gaim crashes when I click on "save icon" https://launchpad.net/bugs/54445 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok. The problem goes something like this: This function is called to decide if the timer IRQ is "working". static int __init timer_irq_works(void) { unsigned long t1 = jiffies; local_irq_enable(); /* Let ten ticks pass... */ mdelay((10 * 1000) / HZ); /* * Expect a few ticks at least, to be sure some possible * glue logic does not lock up after one or two first * ticks in a non-ExtINT mode. Also the local APIC * might have cached one ExtINT interrupt. Finally, at * least one tick may be lost due to delays. */ if (jiffies - t1 > 4 && jiffies - t1 < 16) return 1; return 0; } Note the use of mdelay(). Since we're testing the advancement of jiffies we can't use a jiffy-based timer. mdelay delays with a busy loop that runs a certain number of iterations based on the BogoMIPS rating of your machine. The problem is that BogoMIPs are detected somewhat randomly on my laptop. The "calibrating delay..." message always gets a value of about 3994.7 give or take a couple tenths. The message that comes later gets wildly different values on different boots. [17179570.588000] Total of 2 processors activated (6485.23 BogoMIPS). Depending on the BogoMIPS detected, the delay loop runs in much more or much less time and therefore too few or too many IRQs are detected while attempting to determine if the timer IRQ is connected, causing the test to fail. -- Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! https://launchpad.net/bugs/54621 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*and* Launchpad ate this comment. How lucky can one man be?: This is not the correct fix for the problem. Disabling the old madwifi generation does not fix the symbol conflict since it only prevents the hal module from being generated and the symbol conflict exists in a separate module. Doing password authentication over 'none' cipher is indeed quite bad (unless you're on a trusted local network) but RSA/DSA authentication over an unencrypted transport is totally secure in that no key information is leaked and it's not possible to authenticate without a proper key. Of course, you are more open to session hijacking, but that sort of goes without saying. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: system-tools-backends 20 wakeups per second from the system-tools-backends perl script. caused by this line in /usr/share/system-tools- backends-2.0/scripts/SystemToolsBackends.pl Net::DBus::Reactor->main->add_timeout (50, Net::DBus::Callback->new(method => \&Utils::Monitor::do_monitor_files)); every 50 milliseconds. crikey! since ubuntu doesn't even have Sys::Gamin, this results in a call to a handler that returns immediately (so it's entirely useless). a fix for this problem is to comment that line out. see upstream bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356649 ** Affects: system-tools-backends (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- system-tools-backends abuses the timers in a big way https://launchpad.net/bugs/61186 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hplip-ppds i got a deskjet 3740 for super-cheap at staples. it works great with ubuntu except for two problems. the problem for this bug is that when paper comes out of my printer it comes out with the printed side facing up. the paper then drops onto the tray. this means that if pages come out of my printer 1 2 3 4 they will go onto the tray in order 1 2 3 4. when i pick them up, page 4 is on top. there is an option in PPD files specifically designed to deal with this. this option is documented in the CUPS FAQ here: http://www.linuxprinting.org/cups-faq.html#q_1_7 It says: 1.7 How do I print pages always in reverse order?
