Two things worth noting (for sake of documentation):

1) Currently amd64 is at -8 but i386 is at -7.  This means that (by
luck) there is no problem putting the amd64 kernel on my i386 system.
Of course, this is probably not usually the case.

2) One problem with this: autoconf looks at uname -m and guesses that my
build (and therefore host) system is x86_64.  This results in "the wrong
thing" happening in a lot of cases, unless I override it with
--build=i686-unknown-linux-gnu.  I suspect this to be an autoconf issue.
