[Bug 30910] Re: Hardware Database not browseable

2009-05-13 Thread Paul Sladen
Dave, thanks for that. IIRC, the whole dataset 2GB+ dataset was
available if you knew the URL; so it should be possible to provide that
again with a more stable (and publically published) URL, if for no
reason more than historical interest.

Matthew Paul Thomas says that the desired behavior is:

  * When there are security updates, Update Manager will open and show
them (plus any other available updates) within a day.

  * When there are non-security updates, Update Manager will open and
show them *one week* after it was last opened (whether it was last
opened manually or automatically, and regardless of whether updates
  were actually installed then).

  * When there are no available updates, Update Manager will not open
  automatically at all.

Desired by whom? And where was discussion of this change that effects
the entire Ubuntu community? Because some percentage of users don't
apparently understand that the notification area has meaning, we are not
going to use it for updates? Chow Loong Jin raised a valid point that
if update notification is now done by opening the entire update manager
program, perhaps evolution and similar should open their application UIs

unintended functional consequences of this ill-conceived change,
  discussed in the thread.

Personally, I predict that opening the Update Manager window while
people are working will piss off a lot of users when it happens, and may
result in them wanting to disable automatic checking. Yes, that'll be
  highly desirable, won't it?

[Bug 391729] [NEW] Mobile broadband (3G/GRPS) does not auto-reconnect

2009-06-24 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

If the cellular network leads to the mobile broadband connection
dropping for some reason, Network Manager does _not_ auto-reconnect, and
there is no option in the settings to request it.

Ideally there should be a tickbox to allow auto-reconnection
("redialling") of the 3G connection.

[Bug 381173] [NEW] update-manager randomly pops up without asking

2009-05-27 Thread Paul Sladen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 332945 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Since Jaunty/9.04 came out (so ~1 month), update-manager now pops up
(seemingly) randomly, either after login, or after doing some command
line dpkg operations, or at other times by itself.

This could be related to a cronjob.

Ideally, update-manager should not pop up unless requested to do so.

I run with auto-updates (in theory, at least) disabled, as my primary
internet link in a GPRS connection where bandwidth is both slowly and
monetarily costly.

[Bug 340439] [NEW] Selecting "Shutdown"/"Reboot" requires mouse

2009-03-10 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In jaunty, the lower entries in the 'System' menu have been removed and
replaced with a modified switcher applet.

However, there is no way to open the switcher applet using the keyboard.

It is possible to log in into the GNOME desktop using only the keyboard,
but not then log out again.

Ideally either:

a 'Shutdown... >' sub-menu would be returned to 'System' (giving the
same sub-options as the switcher applet)

or:

Moving around the panel menus with <- Left and -> Right, would also
move around the switcher menu.

[Bug 236526] Re: uupdate should appends -0ubuntu1 instead of -1 to the version number

2008-06-01 Thread Paul Sladen
Two suggestions for slight improvements to that patch:

1. Define the "-1" or "-0ubuntu1" as a macro so that it only needs hard-
coding in the script once.

2. Detect whether we are on Debian, or Ubuntu, and only switch to using
the alternative postfix if we are on Ubuntu

With these, it should be possible to get the patch upstream into Debian
and avoid carrying/maintaining the diff in the future.

I believe in Ubuntu we undertook a large degree of effort to make

Perhaps it would be better to either (a) add the pen sections commented,

[Bug 241000] [NEW] Pairing: passcode dialogue disappears in <1 second

2008-06-18 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez-utils

The pairing dialogues to allow entering a pin and initiate pairing
disappear too fast.

If I do the following:

sudo hcitool cc 00:19:DB:0A:xx:yy && sudo hcitool auth
00:19:DB:0A:xx:yy

a notifier window will pop up for ~1 second and then disappear.

If I click on the notifier window fastest, the main passcode/pincode
entry dialogue will disappear. This also disappears within 1second.

The key seems to be that it is necessary to 'auth', click and 'pincode'
within 1 second of a connection being made. This should actually wait
until the user is able to and none of the dialogue boxes should cut-off
early and disappear without warning.

Forum post discussing the same thing, with screenshots:

Right, so if the bug is in 'mksquashfs', lets file it there.

Could somebody who has the problem do:

[Bug 236158] [NEW] make sudo suggestions/help text 'sudo' aware

2008-05-30 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

By default, 'powertop' prints information such as:

"PowerTOP needs to be run as root to collect enough information"

The first message can be changed to be more generic "root, or using

[Bug 331188] [NEW] [needs-packaging] openbve

2009-02-18 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

OpenBVE is a 3D, public-domain, cross-platform railway/train simulator
("game") engine that specialises in driving realism. It is backwards
compatible with route and train description files designed for 'BVE
Trainsim', or which there are a huge number available for free-as-in-
beer. However most of which have restrictions on distribution

URL: http://openbve.uuuq.com/en/downloads.html
License: Public Domain
Notes: Before packaging/uploading the engine, this needed to wait for Public
Domain data-routes (a route and train) to upload aswell.

Agreement has now been reached (2009-02-18) for relicensing a route and
a train as Public Domain from two other sources; .dfsg tarballs exist
with the files with more restrictive Copyright files (Textures and
Sounds) removed as instructed.

In total this should upload:

  openbve (engine)
openbve-data (engine GUI icons and translations)
openbve-data-icons (temporary from-scratch replacement for icons not
distribute by upstream)

bvt-train-something-something (example train, sounds, textures, performance
metrcs, cab)
bvt-route-something-something (example route, rail line, textures, sounds,
model)

Shall also punt packages to Debian/sid after FF.

[Bug 347405] [NEW] sync libusb usb_set_configuration() + sysfs .../bConfigurationValue

2009-03-23 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

A USB device can offering a number of possible Configurations, with the
host/operating system selecting the most suitable configuration for its
needs. An example could be a media device offering either proprietary,
or Mass Storage configurations.

Changing the selected configuration can be done by either:

  echo 3 >
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb7/7-3/bConfigurationValue

or, using libusb:

  usb_set_configuration(iphone->device, 3);

Currently using one of these methods means that the kernel sysfs state
gets out-of-sync; meaning that udev events are incorrect and the
available '/dev/usbdev7.3_ep??' endpoint symlinks are incorrect as no
udev events are issued.

Ideally 'libusb' should use sysfs on Linux to make the configuration
change, or the kernel should make note of the raw USB commands that it
passes through and update its state.

Currently the Shutdown option is shown as:

however, the "..." is to indicate that further choices need to be made

with no ellipsis. For bonus points, either append it dynamically, or
have two strings.

David: looks like it. Here's a test-case:

1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 (switch to console)
2. Login as /same/ user as in GDM/X.
3. Alt-F7 (switch to X)
4. fusa->Shutdown...
5. Shutdown is instant.

Ideally, on a multi-user system it should probably display something
like:

"Warning 1 other user still logged in. Waiting 60 seconds"

[Bug 346600] Re: fast-user-switch restart/shutdown dialogues do not always appear

2009-04-10 Thread Paul Sladen
Ted, the teh FAIL here is there are two separate (different) tests for
whether the action should be instant.

If the course of action is determined by current log in status, then the
menu-item needs to be set based on *the same test*.

Alternatively, if the menu-item text is set based on a Gconf key, then
the course-of-action needs to be based on *the same test* of checking
the Gconf fail.

At the moment, the left-hand doesn't know what the right-hand is (about
to be) doing.

[Bug 350491] Re: hibernation should be disallowed from the desktop when the installed kernel does not match the running kernel

2009-04-03 Thread Paul Sladen
Hmm. This sounds familiar...

This secret was in having a '/var/run/do-not-hibernate' various and
having a pmi/acpi-support propagate up the lack of a hibernate via
dbus/HAL to gnome-powermanager when the new kernel didn't match the
booted kernel.

Fedora since have something similar (but a little more indepth IIRC)
which may/may not already be included in pm-utils. If it is, it may
only need grub parsing fixing.

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2009-04-03 Thread Paul Sladen
Building these modules in (rather than just fixing to have a
sensible/optional dependency) means it's impossible to force a
particular driver and impossible (at least AFAICWO) to blacklist for
debugging.

(The solution applied so far doesn't appear to have solved the problem
and is instead just another step of the road to monolithic hell).

Have we got a better approach than this sledgehammer?

[Bug 354832] [NEW] impossible to unload ehci_hcd on detective hardware (since compiled in)

2009-04-03 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

As the kludge fix applied for bug #296710 (compile 'uhci_hcd' and
'ehci_hcd' into the kernel as built-ins) it is now impossible to unload
'ehci_hcd' on buggy hardware.

This is effectively a regression.

IMHO, it is better to have slow access (on some small percentage of
machines) than have no USB on others.

Ideally the kernel should be switched back to having modular USB device.

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2009-04-04 Thread Paul Sladen
Scott: sure, but compiling this in hasn't fixed that bug either... but
has had the (negative) impact of just making it even harder to
diagnose/debug with end-users.

Eg. it's no longer possible to request "Hi XYZ, could you try 'modprobe
-r abcd_hci' then 'modprobe ...' and post 'find /sys -path ... | xargs
grep .' " We've instead just got a massive black box that collectively
"doesn't work as of -11.38" with no possibility of an interim workaround
while it's investigated.

Ubuntu was about the first distribution to go fully modular and has
benefited significantly from that choice. It wasn't /easy/ to do; all
the hard stuff with initramfs building and module hooks was *made to
work*, even though it was complex.

If boot-speed and an easy life are the only reasons to ditch that policy
of modularity then it's the focus narrow-minded and not being forward
looking.

Presumbly the kernel does not have a single 'usb_hci' module for a
reason; but this "subtle" change has created one.

[Bug 356344] [NEW] New UVFe to openbve 1.0.2.0 (universe+bugfix only)

2009-04-06 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openbve

OpenBVE has gone 1.0 during feature fix, with a series of incremental
bugfix releases. This also allows dropping several Linux/Mono patches
that were being carried as a delta and reduces the patch load.

A couple of small cosmetic regressions have appeared, but the bugfixes
brought in outweigh the side-effects. Upstream changelog follows:

  v1.0.2.0 (2009-04-05)
  * If a train does not explicitly specify the operating pressure of
the brake pipe, it is now assumed to be 490 kPa if applicable. The
train.dat documentation describes this in more detail.
  * Bugfix: PNG and GIF textures are now synchronously loaded in order
to prevent them from ending up in the alpha rendering list where
applicable (which is more expensive to render and can cause visual
glitches if too heavily populated due to the use of depth sorting).
  * Bugfix: The RefreshRate parameter in animated objects was not
applied if the animated object was used as a train exterior object.
  * Bugfix: Beacons which appeared before the starting position were
not triggered, causing some trains to operate incorrectly on some
routes.

  v1.0.1.0 (2009-03-29)
  * The stop indicator previously showed in Expert mode, which was not
intended. It is now displayed only in Arcade and Normal modes.
Additionally, the debug output is now unavailable in Expert mode.
  * Camera settings are now preserved when changing interior, exterior
and track views. The zoom is reset though when switching the views.
  * The scrolling speed inside the cab has been made slightly slower.
  * Some compatibility graphics (needles) have been resaved as 8-bit
per channel RGBA in order to appear correctly on Linux.
  * The code that applied transparency to the SDL window icon is now
only executed on Windows. It could previously crash the program on
Linux.
  * Warning messages are now shown again in openBVE. However, both
warning and error messages can now be invidually disabled in the
Options menu. Developers are strictly encouraged to leave these
settings enabled, though.
  * Track positions in RW and CSV routes now require to adhere to the
Strict number format. Previously, they were interpreted as Loose, which
could mess up the route too much if an invalid statement was
interpreted as a track position.
  * A default set of points of interests is now included for every
station if the route does not define any points of interest itself.
  * The sound subsystem can now be deactivated in the options.cfg.
  * OpenBve64.exe is now available. It can be used on 64-bit systems
that also provide 64-bit versions of the dependencies.
  * Bugfix: Entering the Jump to station menu previously crashed the
program with an Index was outside the bounds of the array when the
route did not have any stations. The menu entry is not displayed any
longer.
  * Bugfix: In animated objects, the leftdoorstarget and
rightdoorstarget variables could previously crash the program with an
Index was outside the bounds of the array message, or these variables
simply didn't work correctly.
  * Bugfix: In animated objects, texture clamping was disabled and
could lead to visual artifacts at the edges of some textures.

  v1.0.0.0 (2009-03-23)
  * Fixed a bug that made the train topple and derail to the wrong
side when driving backward.
  * Messages about missing support for Windows-only DLL plugins on
Linux/Mac are now only generated if the train actually uses a plugin.
  * If an exception (runtime error) occurs inside a plugin, openBVE
now crashes with the name of the plugin being reported.

0.9 series (development)

  v0.9.7.0
  * Fixed a bug that made digital gauges (LEDs) appear incorrectly
since 0.9.6.0.
  * Modified some of the ingame-displays, including bringing back old
stop indicator and repositioning fps/clock/speed indicators.
  * The A.I. now drives at 80%-100% of the route speed, depending on a
random initial choice. This adds some slight variation to the preceding
train.

  v0.9.6.0
  * The in-game displays have been redrawn to result in a hopefully
more professional look.
  * Cant (superelevation) is now interpolated between blocks to give a
smoother ride.
  * The built-in security systems now cut off power when the doors are
not fully closed.
  * The volume of flange sounds has been slightly adjusted.
  * Fixed a bug that caused a crash when colliding backward with
buffer stop.
  * Fixed a design flaw in the sound manager that could randomly
prevent sounds from playing on some sound cards.

[Bug 356615] [NEW] FFe bve-route-cross-city-south/bve-train-br-class-323 for jaunty/universe

2009-04-06 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

This Feature Freeze exception regards separately downloaded and
specifically negotiated public domain data-files to go with the
'OpenBVE' rail simulator, which is already in Universe. The proposed
packages have been uploaded to:

  http://revu.ubuntuwire.com/p/bve-route-cross-city-south
  http://revu.ubuntuwire.com/p/bve-train-br-class-323

The original needs-packaging is bug #331188, which groups the four
.debs:

  openbve (Simulator engine/game engine)
  openbve-data(Support files; icons, languages, ...)

bve-route-cross-city-south (Negotiated separately as a PD release)
bve-train-br-class-323 (Negotiated separately again, also under PD)

The game engine and its support files were uploaded in February and
accepted into Universe, immediately before Feature Freeze. The
route/train packages did not get uploaded at the same time because of
the circumstances:

  * Last minute negotiation over public domain releases (and non-free cleansing
by upstreams)
  * Large .orig upload size (~30 MB) combined, not possible over unreliable
GPRS access at the time

In the meantime, the game engine has gone 1.0, with a series of small
bugfix releases. This 1.0 release fixed bugs and reduced the patch
delta between the Ubuntu .deb and upstream and thus 1.0.2.0 is now in
the archive.

The train/route packages both contain *no executable code*. There is
*no direct dependency* between the packages, meaning that there should
be a low risk of package/build issues this close to release. The game
engine, route and train package are related based a:

  Provides/Recommends: bve-engine, bve-train, bve-route

relationship combination to allow single-click GUI installation of all
of the jigsaw pieces (if available).

Currently there are no other BVE {train, route} files in the archive.
The packages have undergone several hours ...testing.

[Bug 356705] [NEW] remove 'openbve-data-icons' from jaunty/universe

2009-04-06 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openbve-data-icons

Please remove the source and binaries.

'openbve-data-icons' provided a small number of additional icons that
were missing from the upstream's 'openbve-data' tarball because they
were not public domain. The new upstream release now includes
alternative icons and there is no need for this add-on.

The relationship between the packages was "soft", in that:

  openbve-data-icons Enhances: openbve-data
  openbve-data: Recommends: openbve-data-icons

'openbve-data=1.0.2.0+dfsg-0ubuntu1' now omits this relationship; the
total lifetime of the package being required has been approximately 8
weeks and should ideally be removed from the archive before the final
jaunty release.

As the filenames have changed slightly in the process, the packages do
not conflict. But if suggested, I'll do another upload with Provides:
and Conflicts: but given the short-lifetime, it should be sufficient to
drop it completely and let the autoremover clear it up.

[Bug 357455] Re: Shutdown menu option has "..." but action is immediate

2009-04-13 Thread Paul Sladen
Chris: can you post the patch. Does it actually fix the presented menu
to always be consistent with the expected action; or is it just on the
basis of a hack to check if the logins are the same username (but won't
catch two separate usernames being logged in).

The outside from polkit-auth (both before and after the second login
from the console) is identical. It there any other debugging I can do?

[Bug 335779] Re: taoframework library location not updated after package is installed

2009-04-14 Thread Paul Sladen
I believe this is because (the upstream-compiled) OpenBve is depending
on a particular library+signed revision of the library, which I've got
michelle to remove now.

BTW, hopefully the 'openbve' package contained within Ubuntu itself
(Applications->Add/Remove->openbve) should work.

[Bug 361218] [NEW] Recommends: not pulling in bve-train and bve-route automatically

[Bug 351698] [NEW] Check if reportable, before offering to report

2009-03-30 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

At the moment, 90% of crashes are non-reportable, because the rdepends
installed packages are deemed to be out of date.

Ideally apport should check if non-reportability is going to be the case
before showing the dialogue/notification and if so, go straight to the:

"An application crashed, but it is unreportable because: The following
packages are out of date: x, y, z" screen.

This would avoid pretending to offer users a choice over something that
they have no control over.

[Bug 351700] [NEW] Add "Upgrade" apport when packages are out of date

2009-03-30 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Apport frequently ends its interaction with the user by stating that an
error was unreportable and that packages should be ugrade.

Ideally, for the convenience of the user, Apport should have the "OK"
button default to launching update-manager. With a cancel button to
avoid doing so.

[Bug 337775] Re: no "usability sane" way to reboot jaunty without mouse

2009-07-07 Thread Paul Sladen
The solution, then, is to add the necessary hooks to gnome-panel, so
that any panel-applet with a menu can be sanely (eg. volume control, nm-
applet, ...) opened using the same keyboard sequence.

This is something that could benefit from proper fixing, as there are
only so-many "special" keys and combinations available.

In this case it would actually be that FUSA would be cycled to the
_left_ (wrapping around).

It's something that should most be taken upstream, as just looking along
my panel there's a lot of user-interface inconsistency between applets;
some highlight-themselves, some require a click, some pop-open a text-
entry box, some just show a tooltip; and most of these also have a
second action available via the right-click action.

[Bug 402767] Re: multisearch presents reduced Google functionality and prevents use of location bar "feeling lucky" search

2009-08-07 Thread Paul Sladen
Asac: regarding "the relative usage ratio of the four search places
mentioned"; remember the way in which this is being observed is
altering behaviour (eg. having broken the first-hit functionality of the
location bar, people learn not to use it---and so it won't be used).

A more reliable way to generate the desired data-set is by argumentation
of the browser and suitably anonymised uploads in a manner similar to
popcon.
