[Bug 276943] Re: Resume from suspend doesn't not work on the Mobile 4 Series chipsets

2008-11-21 Thread Nick Booker
Nope, still an issue for me. On a T500 2805-52G (this is a machine I'm
setting up for a customer), the system freezes on return from suspend or
hibernate, just after showing the black screen and mouse pointer.
Sometimes, on first suspend after boot, the system will resume correctly
but will fail to resume on a subsequent suspend.

Doing pmi action suspend as root at a tty suspends and resumes
successfully (I tested without having first logged in at GDM), but then
when I log in the resolution becomes 1024x768.

So things are most definitely still broken.

[Bug 276943] Re: Resume from suspend doesn't not work on the Mobile 4 Series chipsets

2008-11-24 Thread Nick Booker
I tried applying EspeonEefi's patch which seemed to fix resume from
hibernate, but resume from suspend still caused a crash.

Anyway Andy's fix worked for the laptop I was setting up, and it agrees
with the patch on thinkwiki.org.

Thank you both.

[Bug 272457] Re: By default, firefox won't open some txt files

2009-02-24 Thread Nick Booker
Some further debugging if it helps...
Perhaps the below is unrelated - it appears more of a side effect or another
bug uncovered by the presence of the original.

I can open and read the file downloaded to /tmp in vi or gedit.

If I double-click the entry in Firefox's Downloads manager (which is marked as
Failed by the way), the file attempts to re-download and then I get a different
error:
/tmp/UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.0.1.txt could not be saved, because you cannot
change the contents of that folder.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a
different location.

So checking permissions...
/tmp has drwtrwtrwt.
/tmp/UbuntuCodeOfConduct-1.0.1.txt is, for some reason, read-only:
-r 1 nick nick 4606 2009-02-21 17:50 /tmp/UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.0.1.txt

A chmod u+w /tmp/UbuntuCodeOfConduct-1.0.1.txt, and double-click on the
file entry in the Downloads list again, a new entry appears in the
Download list, not marked as failed this time, and if I then double-
click that the file opens in gedit, as I would have expected.

My boss John has looked at this, and found that if you manually specify
gedit or gvim as application (by clicking the drop-down and selecting
"Other...") the appropriate app opens the file successfully.

2009-03-16 Thread Nick Booker
OK, I think it's worth trying to find out which libraries are in common
between the applications that are causing trouble.

Could you post the files resulting from:
 ldd /usr/bin/vlc > vlc.ldd
 ldd /usr/bin/k9copy > k9copy.ldd
 ldd /usr/bin/virtualbox > virtualbox.ldd

This might help narrow down our search. Could you also attach the
strace from virtualbox?

[Bug 319347] Re: Dialup connection too slow.

2009-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
If you haven't paid linuxant for the hsfmodem driver, the speed will be
limited.

You have to pay linuxant for a license key before you can get the full
speed, or alternatively buy a full-hardware modem (few and far between
nowadays, but a serial one will almost definitely work).

See http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/, from which I quote:
# a free version (limited to 14.4Kbps data), available at no cost. Please use
it to test if your hardware is compatible.
# a full version (with 56K and FAX), available for a modest price.

p.s. I hope my guessed translation for the title was correct - apologies if not.

[Bug 332868] Re: Conflict in Terminal result

2009-02-22 Thread Nick Booker
It looks from the wvdial output like you're connected. If you are
having trouble browsing, it could be that Network Manager isn't noticing
the connection made by wvdial and is setting Firefox to "offline mode".

If this is the problem you are trying to describe, if you connect using
wvdial as you have been doing, then open firefox and make sure that
"Work Offline" on the File menu is *not* checked, you should be able to
browse.

The "DISABLED" ethernet interface is nothing to do with your wireless
broadband interface, and can be ignored. That is related to your wired
network port.

Please post whether or not this answers your question, so we can pursue
or close this bug as appropriate.

[Bug 329401] Re: Update hangs with "filesystem" full - Not mentions which

2009-08-10 Thread Nick Booker
Presuming you can still log into the machine, it's worth first becoming root:
 sudo -i

As asked in comment #2, please post the output of:
 df -h

Then, look at the sizes of the directories in your root filesystem:
 cd /
 du -x --max-depth=1 . | sort -nr

That will give you a summary of the disk usage in the directories
directly under /, sorted with the largest first, in a file named du.out
in /tmp. Please post that output.

This should give you some idea of what's using the most of the space on /.
Of course, you should check that /home is in fact on a separate filesystem with
the command:
 mount

If your /home directory is in fact in the root partition, look out
particularly for large .googleearth directories (if you have it) and
.xsession-errors files in users' home directories.

Please report back your findings. Definitely don't go deleting files
anywhere unless you are 100% sure they're not needed. If you don't know
what the files do, leave them alone and ask.

error message:

[Bug 67027] [edgy] Caps Lock doesn't work (CyMotion Master Linux)

2006-10-19 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

I'm not sure if this is linked to bug 66991, but it was in trying to
resolve this problem that I discovered the problem I describe in bug
66991.

The problem is the caps lock key does not work - no LED illuminates and
no capitalisation takes place. The keyboard is a Cherry Cymotion Master
Linux. Num Lock works OK, as does Scroll Lock (the LED lights for it
anyway - I've got no idea what Scroll Lock is supposed to do), but Caps
is completely dead.

Any suggestions why?

[Bug 67027] Re: [edgy] Caps Lock doesn't work (CyMotion Master Linux)

2006-10-21 Thread Nick Booker
Sorry, I've further investigated the problem and I don't think it's an X
issue after all - Caps Lock stops responding much earlier in the boot
process than running of /etc/init.d/gdm (in fact it's when it runs the
/etc/init.d/keyboard-setup script that Caps gets stuck in whatever state
it's in. X then loads and turns Caps off, but the Caps key still
doesn't toggle).

[Bug 67350] [edgy] No response to Caps Lock key

2006-10-21 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Hi.
I've been having trouble with my keyboard, in that I cannot toggle the Caps
Lock function.
I initially thought it was an X problem, but further investigation found that
the Caps Lock key stops responding earlier in the boot process, specifically
coinciding with the message "Setting preliminary keymap...".

I traced this message back to this package as follows:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d$ grep -H "Setting preliminary keymap" *
keyboard-setup: log_begin_msg "Setting preliminary keymap..."
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d$ dpkg-query -S /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup
console-setup: /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup

The key works perfectly when I boot from the Edgy Beta live CD, but only
in X - it doesn't work in console mode. In an up-to-date installation
of Edgy (installed from the Beta Live CD then updated with update-
manager) Caps doesn't work full stop, and for some reason
CTRL+ALT+F{1,2,3,4,5,6} doesn't work so I can't test in console mode
(maybe I should report another bug for this).

If it makes a difference, my keyboard is a Cherry CyMotion Master Linux,
and it is attached to my system by PS/2.

Cheers,
Nick

[Bug 62973] Re: Rhythmbox is confused by two CD drives

2006-10-02 Thread Nick Booker
I can confirm this - exactly the same problem.

Also, I´ve noticed that if I put the CD in the same drive as it was last
played in and restart Rhythmbox it will work OK, but if it´s put into
the first drive again it will yet again fail.

To duplicate this bug:
1. Open Rhythmbox
2. Put audio CD in drive [hdc].
3. Double-click CD´s entry in side pane. Failure icons shown at all tracks.
4. Eject CD and place in other drive [hdd]
5. Double-click CD´s entry in side pane. CD plays.
6. Close Rhythmbox, leaving CD in [hdd]
7. Open Rhythmbox, leaving CD in [hdd]
8. Attempt to play CD again. CD plays.
9. Remove CD and put back in drive [hdd]
10. Try to play CD. Success.
11. Remove CD from [hdd] and close Rhythmbox.
12. Open Rhythmbox and put CD in [hdc].
13. Try to play. Fails as per step 3
14. Move CD to [hdd] again and try to play - CD plays.
Try with a different CD swapping [hdc] and [hdd].

The eos_cb warnings appear in sync with each track Rhythmbox attempts but fails

When CD is moved to the second drive and the CD plays successfully,
there are no warnings.

A snippet of output with the -d switch (can´t get it all because earlier
messages have left the scroll buffer). This is repeated for each track
it attempts to play:

[Bug 71762] No easy way to enable Burn Proof feature of drive

2006-11-14 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Currently, the only way to enable the Burn Proof key in gconf is to edit the
gconf database manually using gconf-editor or gconftool.
As a result, a user may find it difficult to enable the feature, or not even
know it exists.

There should be a checkbox in the Write to Disc dialog allowing the user
to enable it, or if the UI really must hide the option, burnproof should
be enabled out of the box.

[Bug 87583] Re: Patience / Klondike autoplay plays wrong cards

2007-10-28 Thread Nick Booker
I can confirm this is a problem in Feisty, it just happened to me,
placing a 4 of hearts on top of a 2 of hearts, and making the game
unwinnable if you don't notice what it's done.

There is a bug filed on this on the KDE Bugzilla
(http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56637), and there's a patch posted
on 29/10/2006 which supposedly fixes the issue.

I don't know whether that patch was in Sid when the Feisty tree was
downloaded.

[Bug 129660] Advansys SCSI host adapter not detected

2007-08-01 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

There appears to be a problem with HAL not picking up the SCSI Host Adapter
device on the Advanced System Products, Inc "ABP940-U / ABP960-U" device
(driver: advansys). Hence, none of the drives are displayed either.

I'm trying to query HAL to find all optical drives, but I find no drives
or host adapters are reported by HAL for this SCSI card, whether by looking at
lshal, the GNOME Hardware Information panel, or my own queries for optical
drives through Python's dbus module.

The Silicon Image and 6300ESB SATA hosts in the system are picked up
fine, along with all of their SCSI host adapter and storage devices.

The "ACP940-U / ABP960-U" device *is* listed as a PCI device, but with
no children.

The drives do work and are detected by cdrecord, as shown below. The
SCSI host in question is scsibus2 in the following dump.

[Bug 14911] Re: Flash plugin problem with ARGB visuals causes crash

2006-10-30 Thread Nick Booker
Yep it's the same for me in Edgy, same debugging output at the console.
It didn't happen in Dapper so this seems to be a regression.
Interestingly it only happens on the machine I've newly built with Edgy
final release Live CD - the ones I've kept up to date having installed
from the Edgy Beta live cd seem to cope with Flash fine.

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 fixes it as it did in Breezy.

This is the same with both the flashplugin-nonfree and the self-
installed copy of Flash 9 beta as Aaron Whitehouse pointed out.

[Bug 67027] Re: [edgy] Caps Lock doesn't work (CyMotion Master Linux)

2006-10-31 Thread Nick Booker
OK I solved this in X just now (before reading your email but on info
from the forums) by changing "uk" to "gb" under "XKBLayout" so that's
solved, but there's still the problem at the console. The problem of
Caps not working in the console, however, is a duplicate of (and better
explained in) Bug #63104. It appears that the Caps key is appearing to
the console as a Shift Lock, not Caps Lock. Really odd.

[Bug 63104] Re: caps lock led doesn't work on the virtual terminals

2006-10-31 Thread Nick Booker
Same here with Edgy Final (updated via Web from Beta).
After a bit of detective work, I've found that the LED stops responding when
the /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup script runs as part of rcS.d. The package which
owns this script is console-setup, and the script it calls is /bin/setupcon
which is owned by the same package (console-setup). If I disable
/etc/init.d/keyboard-setup the LED stops responding later in the boot process
when /etc/init.d/console-setup is run.

NEW INFO: Caps seems to be acting as a Shift Lock (Sticky Shift), not
Caps Lock - I'm getting : rather than ;, @ rather than ' etc (British
keyboard). Maybe Pascal De Vuyst, eantoranz or some other victim could
verify this if they're still struggling (and if not, please share how
you fixed it!). If the Caps key isn't even working as Caps Lock, then
maybe this explains the LED not functioning correctly.

[Bug 67350] Re: [edgy] No response to Caps Lock key

2006-10-31 Thread Nick Booker
For the benefit of any others who experience the same problem, I think I've
half solved it (in X (see bug 66991)) - changing the XKBLayout entry in
xorg.conf from "uk" to "gb" solved this so now I can switch to VTs and use Caps
Lock (though now I've lost Scroll Lock but does anything use that anyway?)
Maybe it's the installer selecting a dodgy keyboard layout ("uk") when I select
"United Kingdom" from the presented list, and it should choose "gb" instead?
There's still no Caps in the console though which I would think is of the same
nature - now I must investigate where to change the layout for the console...

[Bug 525029] [NEW] Boot loader device drop-down doesn't change field

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In the latest daily build (20th January) the Advanced Options dialogue
box on the final page has, as usual, a combo box to select the boot
device, under the title "Device for boot loader installation:".

However, picking a device (/dev/sda12, which is the root partition in this
case) doesn't update the display in the text box; as I would expect it to.
I can edit the device path manually as per a normal text box though.

[Bug 525033] [NEW] During installation "Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/XXX -- Device or resource busy"

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

During installation a dialogue box appears with the following text:
Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda2 --
Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you
made to /dev/sda2 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in
any way before rebooting.

Screenshot attached.

If I click Ignore, the installer pops up the same dialogue except
referring to /dev/sda3. The installer then continues after clicking
Ignore on that one.

Both /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3 on my system are Unix partition types, which may
shed some light:

 sda3: Solaris

[Bug 525040] [NEW] Installer ignores boot loader device

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I specified an alternative device manually (/dev/sda12 which is the root
partition I installed Ubuntu to) for the GRUB boot loader in the
Advanced dialogue, however the installer installed GRUB to /dev/sda.

This may be related in some way to #525029 I reported earlier, but isn't
exactly the same problem.

Booting into the newly-installed Lucid and manually installing with
grub-install worked, however I need to use the --force option. I've attached a
transcript of my shell session for doing that.
EDIT: Despite the warnings, I can then chainload to /dev/sda12 from another
GRUB installation and boot Lucid via its own GRUB with no problems.

[Bug 508524] Re: Quadrapassel display corrupted (black and white vertical stripes)

2010-01-17 Thread Nick Booker
Have just updated my installation on both my laptop and the KVM.

The graphics are fine on the laptop (IBM x41 with Intel graphics), but
still the same corruption on the VM.

Does that mean this could be an X issue?

[Bug 525386] [NEW] GDM restarts once after boot in Lucid

2010-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After a fresh boot of Lucid, installed from a daily live image, GDM
appears for a few seconds (just long enough to click my username and
start typing my password), then disappears and re-loads to a blank login
screen, so I have to start the login process again.

Subsequent logouts, switch user etc are not affected -- this only occurs
once when the system has been freshly booted.

My current driver is nvidia, but it also happened with the default Free
Software driver for this card before I installed the binary one (I'm not
sure whether the default is nv or nouveau).

Re: [Bug 525040] Re: Installer ignores boot loader device

2010-02-23 Thread Nick Booker
I ran apport-bug ubiquity from the installer disc, to get the right
version info etc, because I don't know if there are side-effects of
installing ubiquity in an installed environment.

Do you want me to collect some info from the installed environment?

[Bug 525029] Re: Boot loader device drop-down doesn't change field

2010-02-23 Thread Nick Booker
No, selecting /dev/sda12 from the drop-down still doesn't update the
text box.

I've used the latest daily live CD, however I updated the installer to
v.2.1.24 to get the fix for #524993. I hope that hasn't skewed the
result.
