** Description changed: Binary package hint: hal There appears to be a problem with HAL not picking up the SCSI Host Adapter device on the Advanced System Products, Inc "ABP940-U / ABP960-U" device (driver: advansys). Hence, none of the drives are displayed either. I'm trying to query HAL to find all optical drives, but I find no drives or host adapters are reported by HAL for this SCSI card, whether by looking at lshal, the GNOME Hardware Information panel, or my own queries for optical drives through Python's dbus module. The Silicon Image and 6300ESB SATA hosts in the system are picked up fine, along with all of their SCSI host adapter and storage devices.
