[Bug 184440] Re: [nvidia] Blue hue in all videos

2008-11-30 Thread Erik
Is there a fix for this yet?

Maybe the fix is to uninstall gstreamer or gxine.

To sum up the problem:

NVidia thinks that hue values range between 0 and 360, with 0 being the
default.

All other programs think that hue is a value between -180 and 180, again
with 0 as the default.

Now, if hue is set to the center of a GUI slider bar (as mplayer shows),
the center (or average) of [0 to 360] is 180. The center of [-180 to
180] is 0.

Seems like someone needs to standardize hue values and shift their range
180 degrees!

[Bug 392283] Re: it's just possible to print the current month

2009-06-26 Thread erik
Sorry!... reading what i wrote I understand perfectly... I hope the
following explanation will be enough

in evolution mail:
- click on calendar (for me, in italian "Calendario")
- in the sidebar on the left select month clicking on the left arrow to join
july (for me "luglio") and then click on the first of july and drag to 31.
after this I have selected the days between 29 of june to 2 of september
- click on file - print preview (for me "file - anteprima di stampa")

I expected to see a preview reporting as title "july" (id est "luglio"),
and days between 29 of june to 2 of september, but i have "june"
(giugno) as title, and days between 1 of june to 12 of july.
(schermata1.png)

then:
- click on file - setup page (file - impostazioni pagina)
- click on landscape (orizzontale)
- in the sidebar on the left select month clicking on the left arrow to join
july (for me "luglio") and then click on the first of july and drag to 31.
- click on file - print preview (for me "file - anteprima di stampa")

Now I see a rotated page (readable from left) titled July ("Luglio")

2009-05-19 Thread Erik
Colin,

I have a Armada e500 and had the same problem. I have just booted the
generic debug-kernel. After the modprobe command I get and oops, but the
prompt is returned, so I can sent you the output of dmesg. I you need
more please tell me what. I have to reboot to the 2.6.28-11-generic
kernel to get networking because I have not yet recompiled the driver

[Bug 247973] [NEW] cp -i and mv -i don't work

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.04.1"

To protect me from my own mistakes I thought it would be nice to alias
the commands rm, mv, and cp and each time ask for interaction. This is
when I noticed that the commands mv -i and cp -i actually ignore the -i.
I've tested it with --interactive but the same here. There is no problem
for rm.

I tested it in a vm, on my desktop computer and my laptop and all gave
the same result back.

[Bug 220991] Re: Thunderbird corrupts attachments from IMAP exchange server

2008-05-20 Thread erik
I would like to confirm this. Since 24-04-2008 my attachments from the
Exchange IMAP server of my university (xs.utwente.nl) in Thunderbird are
corrupt. I have .doc and .pdf examples of this.

Through Microsoft Outlook Web Access I can download the same attachments
just fine and they are usually like 30% bigger than the ones from
Thunderbird.

I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and am on WindowsXP.

Actually, so did update-notifier shortly thereafter when Synaptic tried
to update it. I _think_ that update-manager may have been searching for
updates before I started because it never told me that I had any
available yet, or it could have been in a bad state before I started.
When I installed Ubuntu 32-bit yesterday, it almost immediately offered
updates, but not on my 64-bit install.

The packages that crashed on upgrade were not marked as broken
afterward, but I used Synaptic to reinstall them just in case.

I apologize if this is a duplicate.

[Bug 357724] Re: radio_maestro module generates kernel oops and crash

2009-08-13 Thread Erik
Sorry for chiming in late. just tested on my Armada E500 with the test
kernel (-generic) from the link in post #25 and had no crashes with the
modules deleted from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Sound works, so the
fix also works on my E500. I also tested the 2.6.28-14.47 kernel that
has recently been released for USN-807-1 but that does not yet contain
this SRU. I thought I would just throw that out here for anybody that
maybe confused by both the kernels from USN-807-1 and Colin's test
kernels being 2.6.28-14.47. Thanks to everybody who made this fix. Hope
to see it in the official kernel soon.

[Bug 30570] Re: CPU usage very high with no running tasks using it

2006-06-27 Thread Erik
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 30557 ***

I can confirm this is a problem on my HP Compaq nc6230. Intel Pentiume
M processor 1.86Ghz. Running the official kernel 2.6.15-25-686 gives me
a couple dozen percentage points higher CPU usge when idle while the
2.6.15-25-386 kernel leaves me at near 0 percent CPU usage when idling.
It's always the X process that shows to be using the CPU time. Here is
the process as listed in gnome-system-monitor:

/usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7

gnome-system-monitor shows overall CPU usage at ~50% while top shows a
fluxtuation of ~15-35% (it's harder to see what the real usage is w/o a
graph). The 386 kernel usage is what should be expected, which is
nearly at the bottom for CPU usage. All of this is while "idle", of
course.

[Bug 131973] Re: desktop random freezes in feisty

2007-10-19 Thread Erik
I'm still having these problems after upgrading to Gutsy.

I have a Pentium D 830 with an ATI radeon X600 (RV380). I was using the
open source radeon DRI drivers with aiglx to run compiz-fusion.
Yesterday I decided to try switching back to the restricted ATI driver
and xgl. Haven't had a crash since. So the radeon driver or aiglx
might be part of the puzzle.

[Bug 155045] Clock ticking at 5x the normal rate

2007-10-20 Thread Erik
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy my clock has been running at 5x the
normal speed and this is affecting pretty much everything.

It's impossible to double-click (regardless of application) because the time
between clicks is passing too quickly.
It's difficult to type (regardless of application) because the repeat rate is
too high.
Animated cursors are playing back too fast.
Animated icons in Firefox are playing back too fast.
It's impossible to use mouse gestures in Firefox because they keep timing out.

It took two hours to fill out this bug-report! :-)

[Bug 125581] System hibernates after being resumed from suspend

2007-07-12 Thread Erik
Public bug reported:

I have Feisty power management set to suspend my computer after 60
minutes of inactivity.

When I try to wake-up my computer, it presents me with a locked screen
and a password prompt. I enter my password, and the system resumes for
about 5 seconds, and then the screen goes black, shows some log info,
and then goes into hibernation.

If I press my power button again, the system boots to grub, and then
resumes my machine (all windows still open from the original suspend
operation).

I'm not sure which log files need to be attached, so let me know if you
need any of them and I'll gladly post...

Thanks!

[Bug 130559] Re: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) - no sound

2007-11-13 Thread Erik
The linux-backports-modules got me sound on my fresh install of Gutsy on
a Dell Latitude D630, but sound mixing is all fouled up. When I got to
mess with volume levels (whether the buttons on the laptop or the volume
control panel), the volume will start out at the level I set it for,
then it will slowly get louder and louder until it is maxed out. It's
almost like one of these hardware volume buttons is stuck, but it's not.
It's very strange because there is a delay before it decides it's time
to start cranking the volume up (and it's very slow and gradual). I
have tried this with a couple different audio programs and the results
are the same. You don't see the audio slider bars or controls going up,
you just hear the volume getting louder and louder until it maxes out.

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-05-28 Thread Erik
After I upgraded, the grub menu.list file was incorrect. The entry for
2.6.20-15 looked like this BEFORE:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic
root=UUID=6430bdad-99af-4e51-8552-4f50510924c1 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
quiet
savedefault

AFTER the upgrade, my 2.6.20-16 AND 2.6.20-15 entries were altered so
that neither was bootable. The offending line seems to be the "root"
line as it was changed to "(hd1,1)" instead of the previous "hd(0,1)". I
manually adjusted this and was able to boot BOTH 2.6.20-15 and
2.6.20-16.

After upgrade: (before I manually fixed it)
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic
root(hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic
root=UUID=6430bdad-99af-4e51-8552-4f50510924c1 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-16-generic

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-05-28 Thread Erik
Forgot to mention, the system I upgraded in my previous post had no SATA
drives, all drives are PATA in that box. I have not yet upgraded my
machine that has a mix of SATA and PATA drives.

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-05-28 Thread Erik
Update...

I posted earlier that after upgrading, my grub menu.list file was not
correct. Apparently, the "groot" option in the file was not set
correctly (maybe on install?). After setting it to "(hd0,1)", update-
grub seems to correctly set the "root" lines for my grub entries.

[Bug 110600] slime and cmucl won't start

2007-04-27 Thread Erik
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to get slime up and running under Xemacs and cmucl. I'm
pretty sure I've installed everything correctly, but my slime
environment doesn't look right. (I had slime/cmucl working great on Ubuntu
Edgy. I'm now running Ubuntu 7.04/Feisty).

On my previous system (Ubuntu Edgy) I had:
-Auto Indenting
-A slime/Lisp drop down menu in Xemacs.
-A split frame would open for errors/debugging.
-A nice prompt to work from.

None of the above work presently.

When I load slime, the data below is printed to emacs:

[Bug 69186] Reboot hangs Sony PCG-GRT390ZP Kubuntu 6.10

2006-10-29 Thread Erik
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Kubuntu 6.10 on a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT 390ZP
laptop reboot hangs. The final boot message is:

[xxx.yy] Restarting System.

and then nothing else happens. I have tried adding "reboot=h" and
"reboot=b" as well as adding "nomce vga=791" to the kernel command line.
None of these options fixed the problem.

I had previously been using a 2.6.15-25-686 kernel from Mepis 6.0 with
the following boot command line that was able to reboot fine.

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-27-686 root=/dev/hda6 nomce quiet

[Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy

2007-03-24 Thread Erik
Please let people know to make sure they have enough HD space available
for upgrade (I know this is probably common sense)...

I started the upgrade while ktorrent was downloading a few large
torrents, came back and the upgrade had stopped part way through,
ktorrent was throwing errors at me, and now I'm at a loss of what to
do... packages won't install or upgrade and the ubiquity installer wants
to reformat my hard drive, even though it really doesn't need it.

Luckily I have this laptop to report my troubles from.

I also think that this bug is causing hald to use ~40% of my cpu
constantly (not exactly great for battery life).

[Bug 565810] Re: packages.medibuntu.org not available

2010-04-19 Thread Erik
Hi,

I just tried [cr|my|za|it].packages.medibuntu.org, they all resolve to
that same IP: 67.215.65.132 which does not work to fetch packages. Also
tried 88.191.101.8 and 88.191.82.11 fail. Guess I'll have to wait until
Wednesday. A shame as I am expecting the medibuntu eqiuvalents of
USN-931

[Bug 508456] Re: Lucid frequently crashes while starting gdm on Averatec 3280

2010-02-11 Thread Erik
Somehow installing compiz "solved" the weird startup behaviour.
I know, this is not a real solution, but I guess compiz changed the startup
order in a way.

I did not yet test removing compiz again, though, to see if the problem
is reproducable.

I have tryed

[Bug 546992] Re: Xubuntu 10.04 USB, CD and DVD automount fails if autologin is on

2010-05-03 Thread Erik
I could reproduce this on my 3 Xubuntu boxes I just upgraded. I do not
use auto-login, so that is not a factor. What I notice is that in the
first login session (xubuntu session) started after a reboot, hal is not
started. If you that logout and log back in again, hal is started. All
three had the latest updates as of May 2nd, when I tested this. One is a
AMD64, the other two are i386 machines. I have put /usr/sbin/hald in
rc.local on all three to work around this issue. I have tested with 1
USB stick, one iPod in disk-mode (=USB mass storage) and a phone
connected via a USB cable as USB mass storage (+ttyACM0). Attached
dmesg.log, .xsession-errors are from one of the i386 machines. Two
versions: .first-login from the first login after a reboot, .second-
login from the second login.

[Bug 546992] Re: Xubuntu 10.04 USB, CD and DVD automount fails if autologin is on

2010-05-04 Thread Erik
I tested both Lionel's suggestion in #57, and Dennis suggestion in #7 of
572042. First the results for Lionel's suggestion in #57 of this bug:
- rebooted without hald in rc.local
- inserted USB stick
- Killed 1 Thunar instance (Thunar --sm-cliend-id --daemon
- started Thunar --daemon.
- This did not return to the prompt, so I pressed CTRL-Z, and type bg to put it
in the background
- Nothing happens. Just as before /dev/sdb1 is created (/dev/sdb too) , no hal
proces is started, /media/disk is not created.
- Eject USB stick (forcefully).
- /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1 are deleted
- Insert USB stick again: /dev/sdb & sdb1 are created, /media/disk is not, no
hald proces started.

Now for the Dennis suggestion in #& of 572042: inserting the USB stick
on reboot. This does make a slight difference in my case. The devices
/dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1 are created, no hal proces is stated, but an
entry in /media/ is created with root as owner. Result is I cannot read
from it or write to it. I have not tested with autologin at all. All
just plain logins. Logs: xsession-errors.mounted-before-reboot and dmes

Hi,

I have the same problem on ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. Fash loads, but when I

dailymotion or other flv players.

The problem occurred on Firefox 3.5, chrome beta and Opera 10.

[Bug 502578] Re: Apport doesn't work with default browser Opera

2010-02-02 Thread Erik
Simply passing the url as a parameter should work. When I open a terminal and
enter
$opera www.google.com
a new tab is opened in Opera and it navigates to the given url (google.com in
this case). It is also possible to surround the url with double quotes (").
$opera "www.google.com"

Clicking on an url in Evolution or any other place/program correctly
opens a new tab in the running session.

Please note that Opera distinguishes between a new tab and a new window.
The latter creates a new main window of Opera, while the former simply
adds a new tab to a running main window.

You can force a new tab to be opened by using the -newtab argument, as in
$opera -newtab www.google.com
but this shouldn't be needed as it is the default behavior.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-11 Thread Erik
Sebastian,

Your patch gets us most of the way there. There's still a minor
problem, apparently with the mouse buttons. They can occasionally get
stuck in a "pressed" state.

To reproduce, in Ubuntu (Gnome):
1) Press and hold the touchpad's left mouse button while the pointer is on the
desktop (or anywhere in Nautilus).
2) Drag with the trackpoint (the stick).
3) Stop dragging with the trackpoint.
4) Release the touchpad's left mouse button.
5) Notice that the computer still thinks that the left mouse button is down.
This behavior continues until you initiate an event (movement or buttons) with
the trackpoint.

The inverse works, too (using the trackpoint's buttons and the touchpad
for dragging.)

I believe this happens because the button state for each device is
independent. Back when I was using someone else's patch, I fixed this
by setting the button state for both devices any time the state for one
of them changed. I don't think that's an unreasonable design, as I
can't imagine a time when you'd really want to track them separately.
Could you add this to your patch?

Incidentally, the Windows driver seems to handle the issue by disabling
the touchpad and touchpad buttons any time it is processing events from
the trackpoint. I'm not sure that's desirable, but it is likely the way
that the manufacturer intended for the device to be used.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-12 Thread Erik
Sebastian,

I've uploaded a Youtube video demonstrating the bug. I'm certain that
I'm only using your patch, as I performed a clean installation before
doing my testing. I'm using an m4400, which seems to have the same
Dualpoint. You're right that the patch is a vast improvement, but the
buttons will still probably be a showstopper for me. I'd be happy to
provide any command input (lsusb, etc.) you want to see, or gather any
other information you need. Just let me know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqSZ-mftheM&fmt=18

There are no apparent errors in the dmesg output.

Interestingly enough, regardless of whether or not I'm currently
experiencing the bug, I can reliably cause the driver to lose sync by
pressing all three of the touchpad buttons at once. Pressing all three
of the stick's buttons do not cause the driver to lose sync. I don't
know if this bug is related--it's certainly probably an uncommon
problem.

Erik

Sebastian:
Correct, there are three buttons for each device on my Dualpoint. It's
actually pretty convenient, once you get used to it!

Thanks for all of your work and patience.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-12 Thread Erik
Robert: If I remember correctly, these devices are represented by two
input devs in the code, each with its own set of buttons. There was
something weird about how the buttons were represented in the 9-byte
packet, and what happened with the old patch was that the button state
for dev would differ from the button state for dev2. As long as either
device thinks that the button is down, the button is considered down.
So while the 9-byte packet would change one of the devices button states
to up, it wouldn't change the state for the second. And voila, you have
the behavior demonstrated in the video. You never have the problem if
you're dealing with 5-byte packets (only using one device or the other.)

Charles: Yeah, I often find it very convenient to use the pointy stick
to move and the touchpad button to drag, though I've mostly trained
myself to not do that due to the various problems with this particular
hardware. More commonly, I'll be pressing a button on the stick with my
palm resting slightly on the touchpad and I'll trigger the bugs. That's
the main reason it annoys me.

[Bug 431091] Re: libstdc++5 removal breaks non-ubuntu applications

2009-11-16 Thread Erik
+1 application: Floola, my favorite iPod manager (www.floola.com) needs
libstdc++5 (in ia32-libs because I run it on amd64). Please re-add
libstdc++5, or add a ia32-libs-old with older ia32-libs for us to use.

[Bug 431091] Re: libstdc++5 removal breaks non-ubuntu applications

2009-11-16 Thread Erik
The nicest solution I found is adding this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~jason-scheunemann/+archive/ppa to your sources with
these lines:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jason-scheunemann/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jason-scheunemann/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Accepting the key, and installing "lib32stdc++5" package. This is for
amd64 systems.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-17 Thread Erik
@James: That happens after a lot of desync issues. The kernel module
reverts to proto=bare. You can replicate this behavior on a running
system by issuing the following commands as root:

# modprobe -r psmouse
# modprobe psmouse proto=bare

You can also modify your Grub config to get this at boot.

[Bug 579876] [NEW] encrypted home directory doesn't mount after password change

2010-05-13 Thread erik
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce.

1) install a fresh system of ubuntu 10.04 and make sure to select the option to
encrypt the home directory
2) start ubuntu
3) change password of your user with "passwd" from a shell (actually I did
"passwd username" in a root-shell if I remember correctly, but that shouldn't
matter, should it?).
4) reboot
5) login with the new password in gdm
6) observe that the home directory doesn't get mounted correctly
expected behaviour:
the home directory should be "decrypted" and mounted correctly

workaround:
sudo to root and change back the password with passwd, then reboot.

[Bug 589553] [NEW] KVM fails on linux-image-2.6.31-22-generic-pae, worked on previous kernel

2010-06-04 Thread Erik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.31-22-generic-pae

This morning I've installed the linux 2.6.31-22-generic-pae kernel on
Ubuntu Karmic through the update manager. If I boot into this new
kernel, KVM doesn't work. If I run the following command:

sudo qemu-enable-kvm

I get just a blank QEMU screen, nothing else happens. If I boot back
into my old 2.6.31-21-generic-pae it displays BIOS messages mentioning
that there is no disk to boot from. If I run a proper CD-ROM or disk
image, again it works in the old kernel while the new only gives a blank
QEMU screen. Plain QEMU (without the -enable-kvm switch) works on either
kernel.

No dmesg output appears on a failed attempt to run KVM.
